Be careful if you are the family member or caretaker of a mentally disabled person. On a recent trip to the Bed Bath and Beyond store in Huber Heights, Ohio, my sister(who is deaf and mentally disabled) acted out by hitting me. I escorted her outside the store(while being snickered at and stared at by store employees), to prevent any damge to their precious merchandise, or more importantly to me, other customers. Because she was still upset, my aunt, son, and I decided to wait until she calmed down before getting in the car to go home. The "helpful" store manager called the police and told them that I had beaten up my sister, and that we were fighting in the parking lot. LIES!! This AFTER my aunt had gone back into the store to explain the situation and my sister's disabilities. TWO police cruisers with flashing lights come tearing into the parking lot, cops running and yelling, etc. just added fuel to the fire. After a lengthy conversation, the police decided they did not want to have to deal the situation, and once they found out the TRUE situation, were quite helpful. The next day, I contacted the corporate offices to register my complaints about the way their employees behaved, I was told that they refuse to apologize, and that it was a loss prevention matter. However, they do invite me to continue to shop in their stores. Yeah right. It will be a cold day in H*!! before they get another cent of my money. If they had done nothing, I would not be nearly so PO'd, but to tell lies like they did, just because they are ignorant and prejudiced is sick.:tisk: :tisk: :tisk: :tisk: :tisk:

MS,

Although your story is unfortunate I fail to see where the store is at fault. An assault in fact took place in their store as you stated "your sister hit you". The store is obligated to call the police. Further you state that you "escorted" your sister outside to protect yourself, others and merchandise. If this was a physical escort I can imagine that the store associates were confused. Finally you state that she was "too upset" and needed to "calm down" prior to getting in the car. I again guess that this could be misconstrued by the store associates who saw this through the store's front windows. The store manager did what he thought best, the police did what they thought best and you want an apology? I'm sorry but I fail to see what the store did wrong.

Knowing your sister's disabilities and special concerns, I'm sure that you have had similar outbursts or situations before. I know that it can be frustrating but projecting blaim onto associates who don't deal with your sister on a daily basis, in my opinion is misplaced. The store did what they thought best given what they witnessed. I myself would be reluctant to not call the police as then I'm sure someone would hold me liable for allowing an assault to occur in my business and not do anything about it. A latigious society has left us less apt to get involved and more likely to call the police, social services, etc.

Again frustrating, but not culpable. Sorry this had to happen to anyone, ever. And God bless you for taking care of your sister.

I'm sorry to hear that :(. Sounds like a big misunderstanding...I'd be upset too if someone accused/thought I was beating up my sister. At least it was all sorted out in the end. It's too bad the store didn't apoligize for even just having a misunderstanding, or an unfortunate event. I agree with CVP33, god bless you for taking care of her!

I love disabled people.
90% of the time they appreciate everything and don't bitch and complain.
They don't feel sorry for themselves and everything is simple for them.
No complicated stupid BS drama like normal people create..

They're just living life

My uncle back east has some kind of cerebral palsey like condition..
The doctors call it MD, said he would die at 12 but he is 45 now!

I do not disagree that she assaulted me. What I have a problem with is their lies. She hit me INSIDE their store. They lied and said I hit HER, but only OUTSIDE the store. The employees were told what the situtation was by my aunt BEFORE they called the cops. The part that rubs salt in the wound was their lauging and snickering when it was happening, and then telling the police that it was a "frightening" situation. Yeah, I am sure I look menacing to my sister who outweighs me by about 150 lbs. To top it all off, call it a loss prevention issue, yeah right. I walked in expecting to spend several thousand dollars that night, and had the cash in pocket to do it, with plastic backup, I was really going to steal from them. NOT.

What pisses me off is their stupid attitude toward the disabled. They act like it is contagious or something. It is pathetic. I work at a Cadillac dealer, and we have a number of customers who are deaf. We had one customer, then when he found out someone at the store knew sign language, all of sudden we have about a dozen deaf customers he sent to us. HMMM.

Compassion and at least an honest effort to communicate with customers goes a long way. Unfortunately, the part of communication that most often is ignored is the LISTENING part.

I guess you just have to feel sorry for the kind of people that would laugh at a situation like that...again, I am sorry you had to go through that. I agree, calling it a loss prevention issue doesn't make sense

I agree,
It is awful and sad when someone would make fun of a disabled person.
Right after my mother had her stroke and was having trouble speaking - one of the hospital employees was making fun of her for it

My father he elbowed the guy in his throat because dad was in pretty bad shape worried about my mother and the hospital fired the guy for it.

It is so sad that someone would make fun of a disabled person

Disabled people will appreciate things so much it is amazing.
For example if you're renting houses and you put in some good handicapped access equipment they will be good tenants to you and always pay on time and they never abuse your property or cause problems.

You ought to see how thankful they are for something like that.
A normal person you could buy them the world and they'd complain about the smog :bigroll:

I deal with roughly 5,000 associates who have varying degrees of education and background. I find then when faced with a stressfull situation some laugh, some grin, some avoid eye contact, some walk away and so on. Unfortunately there are many people that don't know how to act/react when confronted with someone who has a disability.

I worked my way through college bagging groceries. Next to our store was a Salvation Army halfway house. There was an elderly couple who lived there and both had cerebal palsy. They would come in daily to get groceries and their limbs and faces contorted in unimaginable ways. Their speach was almost unintelligible. Most associates in the store avoided them at all costs. One day I made it my goal to help them and learn to understand them. From then on I helped them shop whenever I was on duty. I pre-opened each of their jars for them as their grip was not that strong and made sure they got everything they came for. The day I left the store, all three of us had a good cry.

Helping someone who can never repay you is the greatest gift you can ever give.

God bless you there! :)

In truth it was not "assault" but what people in the field call "physical aggression".

And somone with half a brain should have been able to distinguish that the girl was NOT trying to "kick" her brothers ass.

Maybe someone could have asked if everything is alrite instead of the ever present "can I help you"?

Most people have at least a cousing with disability to some degree.

Half the police force can onjly exasterbate a incident such as this.
