Here in Hawaii a lot of the police stations can't afford the normal black and white painted police cars that everyone else has. So most of the cops drive their own personal cars around with a big blue light strapped to the top of it. Most of the cops here drive heavily modded mustangs, and dodge stratus's. I saw a camry the other day too.
Not as cool as a 78 Dodge Monico Squad Car. This car is for sale on E-bay, I know the current owner of it. This unit was a clone and never saw any action. And thats his 911..
The Lotus wasn't seriously used by the Police.
It was mostly a PR stunt as the lights which were just clipped to the roof would come off at speed.
This was though:
It was an Escort Cosworth modified by Fords Rally Team to include uprated suspension, sump guard, brakes and a host of other goodies.
They used it in Humberside to chase car thieves back when joyriding was a bit of an epidemic. It was designed to go over rough ground and handle speed bumps at 70mph.
THere sued to be an Escort Cosworth here too, although one HOT traffic car they had for motoray patrol was a Rover 3500, they used the SD1 hatchback, but before that they had the P6:

I still am partial to the most successful pursuit car in Missouri, the Wild Indian as the ones who drove it nicknamed it.
77 LeMans with a 455 Pontiac, 2.56 gears, THM400, headers, moderate cam. And a top speed >170 mph. It never lost a chase.
I drove it on it's last leg before the engine, trans and rear end got pulled. Even in terrible rust neglected shape (the last dept who had it let it sit and rot) it still had a ton of power and was able to do 70 mph in 1st gear..... Easily....
