hi, My engine light is one, and my friend came with his OBD II scanner, It didn't work, - We tested it on my QX4 and it did, but not with the cadillac, he is puzzled by the problem b/c it show it is connect, not getting an error on the display, but yet it will not show him anything -

What OBD II scanner do with have to use, can someone please help us with this problem -

Also can people tell me with one they use, I wouldn't mind getting on that plugs into the laptop -

Thank you all

I think the one we need is a tech II. It's about $1200 - $1500. Plus you have to have a computer that is hooked up to the GM network to be able to decode the problem and download the flash updates.

This might explain better but you need a CAN reader to communicate and get the appropriate information

I bought a version that plugs into a laptop for under $300. It does all manufacturers data busses, including the upcoming CAN bus. It also has a 'virtual dyno' feature which records engine RPM and vehicle speed to calculate 0-60 times, quarter mile times, etc. It will also calculate RWHP and torque if you input the appropriate information (car weight, coefficient of drag, etc).

Although I have yet to have a code to clear with it on my CTS, I've helped friends identify and clear their codes for Chevys and Fords. It will also plot any real time telemetry that the serial bus outputs (O2 sensor data, engine temp, etc).

have you had it hooked up to your cts yet?

The Tech 2 is $2400 plus the CANdi module for cars with GMLAN, another 400 bucks I think.
There are aftermarket solutions, some generic readers may not work even though there is a redundant class 2 bus to access PCM codes for generic scan tools.
I haven't used a generic one so I can't offer you much advise on that.

Yes, several times. But monitoring telemetry is not all that fun. Looking at a line going across a graph is interesting, but only for about 3 minutes. I've never tried the dyno part because it needs coefficient of drag, cross sectional area, and true weight, among other things. This is very text book, but the reality is there are too many variables to make it accurate. They should have included software that calculates total drag from a coast down (from say 60mph to 50 mph).
