I own a 2005 STS with a 6 cyl engine. From time to time I hear a sound like someone passing gas. I'm not kidding, it's embarrising. The dealer has heard it also and at one time said it was the power steering. He's backed off on that and now says it is something under the hood, but doesn't know what. Anyone heard of this problem?

:farting:

Does it happen when you are turning the wheel, when the car is moving, when the car is stopped, when the car is stopping, any combination of the above?

Reasonable explanation, nothing here w/V8

All of the above. It does it at random times although if I had to guess it would be something to do with the power steering.

I have the same problem. It happens intermittently and sounds just like you described it. It usually happens when I have come to a stop and the noise seems to be coming from the dash area. Any repairs or fixes on this one?

Is this "gas" sound audible from outside of the car?

Does it ever happen when the car is not running?

Is vacuum level ok?

Try turning your steering wheel ALL THE WAY one way, you will hear the valving open in the pump. Hold it there for 5 or 6 seconds. Then do it the other way. (Car not moving please!) Does it make this noise now?

Take it for a drive after the afore mentioned excercise. Does it still do this?

We think we have found the problem. When the climate control system is turned on the noise is coming from the actuator motors that open or close the doors. The dealer is looking into this and said he would call with a solution soon.

Well I can't tell you how to fix it, but I can tell you how to make it stop.

I have the same problem on my 05 STS, and at first it was funny. But after a couple of months of "who farted" jokes, it started to wear thin. So I took it into the dealer to check. I even used the term "passing gas" to describe the problem, and they came back with "this is normal." Somehow, I don't think that hearing this noise on a $60K car is normal.

Oh ... How to make it go away? Just change the setting for the HVAc airflow from AUTO to either "outside" or "recirculate." The noise happens when it switches from one mode to the other one.

My 2005 V6 started with the "farting" and was undiagnoised ("could not duplicate") several months ago. It has now progressed to a constant sqeak in the climate control fan. It only stops when the system is shut off. Scheduled to leave it at the dealer Monday...
It sounds to me like we are getting a GM run around based on the frequency of this complaint when they say the "farting" noise is normal! It should not be in a $50,000 vehicle! I have been harrassed by numerous people on this feature of my "luxury" car. I guess we are reverting to the GM I knew in the 70's and 80's...the customer is last! :tisk: :tisk:

There's nothing unusual about farting. :)

On a more serious note, I hope GM takes care of this ridiculous problem. :(

Yea I got the same problem... I noticed from the beginning when I turn on the AC, I hear that sound...

Well it looks like GM may come through. In my earlier post I indicated I was off to the dealer on Monday. They indentified two faulty parts which were causing my "squeaking" and "farting" from from the climate control unit. The bad news is they will not have the car done until tommorrow and had to rip out the ENTIRE dash. I only hope it comes back without some new squeaks!
Will post what repairs where made when I get it back.
