Bro-Ham wants me to help him remove the variable displacement stuff on his '81 FWB Coupe. I have no idea how to do this, do I just pull a plug or something or is there another way, that gets rid of all that hardware?

There is a way to just unplug it...
Alot of people use to do that I think!

easiest way to do it is to clip the 3rd gear wire on the trans
if it is actually to be removed PM me and i will try to look it up in the factory service manual and email it to you or post it, if it is removed i would be interested in taking the hardware off your hands rather than donating it to the trash man

What's wrong with the system?

I dont think theres anything wrong with it. From what I remember, it still works excellently, but with some vibration in 6 cyl mode, but thats normal. You would have to ask Bro-Ham why he wants it off, its his car, not mine.

I would leave it, and deal with the vibration.
Or wire them up to a toggle switch on the dash for 4/8 cyl when ever the driver feels.... that is a better choice.
I'm interested in taking it off of my car as well, 81 fwb. can i just unbolt the solenoids from the head and remove the wires or will there be consequences. I just want it to run 8 cylinders all the time like a normal engine. It'd be nice to have some metal valve covers as well with all that gone!
And if it does come off im more than interested in getting rid of the hardware, for the record. ha!
