I've got everything stripped down on the motor(74 Eldorado), it sits as a 500 shortblock bolted to a rusty frame....LOL

Before I take the crank pulley and balancer off, i want to know is it REALLY hard to put it back on with a "balancer install tool".

I figure that I might as well put a new timing chain on while I'm freshening everything else up...

Thanks for any and all opinions!!!

If you clean and lightly lube the crank and balancer they usually go together without a problem.

I just did a timing belt on a 95 Ranger pickup. The interference fit is so loose that they don't even put the holes for a balancer puller in the balancer. You just use a 3 jaw puller! It almost went on by hand. Just so you know that it doesn't need a "jack hammer" fit to work.

Thanks man,

When i put the balancer back on my sbc, it basically went back on by hand... i used a big washer and the crank bolt to press it on after i wiggled it on the crank....:)

Thanks for the input....

That's all I usually do. Sometimes I've needed a long bolt to get it started but that's all. You're welcome.

I'm always interested in pics. Open them up in Paint, hit CTRL + W, and enter the percentage values you want.

Some 472/500's have a cast pulley that doubles as a balancer, others have a stamped steel pulley with a separate balancer. Both set ups bolt to a crank hub. The crank hub is pressed onto the crank (it's a tight fit too).

Thanks, I will post some pics of the car "itself" when the tow truck pulled it out of my in-laws and also there's one shot of the engine when i got it home and sprayed it down in the garage...

I will get the latest pics on here early next week...

Yes I believe this one is one piece...

You should be more concerned with getting the crank hub off... the pulley and balancer are not even a concern. Those hubs are tapered... and any taper means PITA! You will need a very nice puller coupled with a VERY strong impact. Getting it back on is a little easier but you will still need a strong impact.

You could also use a 10-15 lb slide hammer to get the hub off, but getting it back on will be a different story.

LOL, glad i waited to more replies first thanks....

So the impact is going on the end of the puller; so normal rachet handle or pry bar is not strong enough? i;ll look in my shosp manual as well...

Ok, i'm gonna try usin my puller first then if it doesn't work out, i'll rent one from the parts store...

Thanks

Look in the archives. Someone listed the correct size for the bolt which is needed to press the crank hub back on. You also need a few heavy duty washers or a thrust bearing borrowed from a puller/installer set. It isn't going on without the bolt unless you beat the snot out of it with a rubber mallet. I've seen that done but it's caveman at work. Good way to bent a crankshaft. Removal is the same as most American V8's. If that hub is left loose then the oil slinger (cone shaped thing on the crankshaft) will rattle.
This ain't a small block Chevy.

Yep, don't beat on it to put it back together. Use the bolt (cannot remember the size). Also, for good measure, I used to spray the hole with lots of carb cleaner, blow out with compressed air, then squirt generous amounts of oil. Probably overkill, but better safe than sorry.

You will likely need to remove a spark plug and get a compressed air adapter. This will prevent the crank from turning while getting that harmonic balancer hub torqued up. And in case you didn't already know, that bolt is just to get things back together. The hole had a cork in it when it left the factory.

As with Jtraik, my biggest concern was getting the hub off. You need to take your time and make sure everything is square and straight.

Its 9/16-18 and i suggesting buying aircraft grade, its not worth a buck or two to chance it snapping off in there. Also make sure you have a strong bushing or many thick washers. I ended up pulling right through 10+ washers getting this hub all the way back on!

Use grease on the washers, cranksnout, and bolt. You don't have to go crazy but you don't want to be fighting friction also. Did you work on this yet?

No i probably won't get to it till later this week...

I bought a bolt for the crank a long while ago, that's how i turned the crank to begin with.

I've r & r a few of these before, i'll pickup a heavy duty washer and I should be good to go....

WOW!!!

i got the balancer/pulley off, my puller started to crack and when i backed off of it and un bolted the puller, the balancer/pulley came right off....

Not much more and the hub would be off .........(cheap puller).... i rent one of the big boys next weekend maybe....

I'll post a few pics later tonight or tomorrow

its kinda strange really I was using a proto 2 ton puller and broke that one that was from the first 472 I bought so I let it soak in wd40 and was able to pull it off with the same puller eventualy I guess it was partly seized to the crank but now on the 472 I am currently rebuilding I used that same 2 jaw puller and the hub came right of with out to much fuss

where did u spray it;

next to the timing cover on the hub?

so then u can get it off with jaw puller....hmmmm, i think i have one in the garage....

Cadillac would have to be difficult but, it's gonna be worth it in the end...

I had the crankshaft out of the engine with the front cover still attached so I was able to spray the front of the hub and the back next to the oil slinger
but on the one I'm working on now I didn't spray it with anything just put that puller on and it came off
