I finally convinced myself to use synthetic oil on my next oil change(1980 deville, 46,000 miles), but then I just seen an ad for oil filters for syn. oil,cost a lot more, is this just a rip off or do you really need syn. filter. tnx

How is the synthetic oil in your deville?

I have the same year and was wondering if I should switch to synthetic...

I have only owned the car for about 3 months,former owner used syn.as I said it only has 46000 miles on it, so dont know if cuts down on oil consumption or not, as in high mile cars. I looked into it and asked other people, it seems to be the way to go. I only drive about 6000 miles a year(have two cars) so I should be safe in changing oil once a year.I plan to change ordinary oil filter at 3000 miles.

Since when is there specific filters for synthetic oil? I've never heard of that...a filter is a filter, and just the oil itself is different.

There is absolutely NO reason to use synthetic oil in an engine of this vintage. Or any other engine unless the factory specs call for it, OR you live in death valley or Alaska. And if anything, it will increase oil consumption.

I wouldn't use synthetic oil either. I have talked with a few buddies (ASE certified) about synthetic oil. They say that it is too slick which doesn't allow the lifters to rotate properly and thus will wear the lifter (and cam lobe too I believe) prematurely. It also may increase oil consumption also. I prefer to use Rotella, or engine oil of your choice, with Lucas oil treatment. Just my one cent.

i am a noob at all this but somwhere in a post, dont remember if it was here or not, but they posted some info on lucas oils, the info was more than anything aginst lucas oils and said that adding this would do more harm , any info on that?

Synthetic filter means synthetically made filter, not synthetic oil specific. Synthetic filters are made with finely ground quartz as the filtering element as opposed to old fashioned paper. The synthetic filters are superior to their paper counterparts.

Also dino-oil is an acceptable choice in any application. I even have plans of using dino instead of synthetic in my resto once shes done and changing it out every 1000 miles or so. To each his own i guess, synthetic oil is still too new in its life IMO.

All I can say about Lucas oil treatment is what I've witnessed. My good friend uses it in his 350,000 mile plus '96 GMC an has had no major engine work done to it. It uses very little oil and gets driven fairly hard on a regular basis.

synthetic oil has been around for 30+ years....

I guess I am the only one in this thread that supports synthetic tho.... been using it in the 4.9 since 79,917 miles... has 116k on it now and runs great.

I use a regular AC Delco oil filter in all my cars.

Just about anything with the Lucas brand name is snake oil, hope-in-a-can, etc. IMO.

Synthetic oil is fine for applications that actually warrant its use. Such as extreme temperatures, extreme running environments like a hill climb for example, or if the factory calls for it. Otherwise it's not worth bothering with.

They say not to use synthetic i nthe first 3000 miles. after that its the best oil

The people selling synthetic certainly do say it's the best...
