Sounds like a heat shield but I crawled my ass under the thing and couldn't see anything rattling,
You can't hear the rattling when you are standing in front of the motor..

Any ideas folks?>

The rattling noises are hard to identify because they are easily transferred to the body. YOu may think it comes from the front but it is actually originated somewhere else. The best way to find the source is lift the car on a hoist and ask a helper to gently powerbrake it.

I could not find the rattling part for two years until i did just that. It was a bracket passsing under exhaust pipe. It has been somehow bended, but i could see some1/2" between bracket and the pipe. So, I never suspected it could be a problem until I saw how whole exhaust system moves back under powerbraking on a hoist. It moved just enough to touch the bracket and make that terrible rattling.

That reminds me of something I heard about some guy dropping a bolt down into his exhaust system,
It caused a horrible unexplained rattling for a long long time there

My cat. conv. rattled like crazy, it was all broken up inside... it would usually only rattle at idle... annoying as hell.

Aha..
Does it hurt anything taking the cat out?

It hurts environment and maybe illegal too. Cat would not rattle just at acceleration.

It only rattles at idle... like yours did,
I could imagine buying a cat from ebay but they always are plugging up on me

Nope :)

If your state has emmissions testing, then you will need to replace it... otherwise slap some stright pipe in there :).

We replaced mine... I would pull it off, but I did pay like $70 for a new cat, and it isn't like its really holding it back that much, so it stays.

?

Mine rattled the worst at idle. Also on acceleration.

It was *really* bad though... it would cause the engine to stall out, horrible MPG, power loss etc....

You *may* be able to tell.... go under the car and bang on the cat... with your fist or maybe a hammer..... hear anything rattling? does it sound like the rattle you hear? There were actually chunks of stuff floating around inside mine.

do NOT buy a used cat off ebay.... it would be like buying used brake pads :). Either pt a stright pipe in, or just buy a new flow-thru universal cat for $70.

Yes sir I meant that,
An inexpensive new one.

I would like to put straight pipe with a flowmaster but these 4.5 motors don't sound V8ey enough to me with pipes
They sound more weedeatery

Well, thats a first that I have ever heard someone say the 4.x series dosn't sound good..... even an HT4100 with aftermarket mufflers sounds good....

I know the 4.9 has a very unique sound, unlike other V8's.... a very nice sound to it.... the 4.5, from the ones I have heard are a tad more raspy, but are very similar.

Weed eater though? Are you sure there wasn't a Honda next to the 4.5..... and the 4.5 wasn't running? LOL.

Yes, I cheated on the first one... that is the stock exhaust system, but I was at the drive up ATM at my bank.... so it was echoing ;) Still sounds pretty cool.... that Edelbrock is due soon....
