Hey group. Took my car to mechanic for brake job and asked him to check the bearings because I am having some noise while driving like "wha wha wha wha". The faster I go the faster the sound goes. He said the bearings were fine and it might be my front tires, as the inside thread on both are wearing low (almost bald). The car drives straight so I don't think it needs an alignment. So to my question: does anyone know if I can put plus size tires on this ride (stock rims) to 265 on front and 285 on rear? Any suggestions on brand and model of tire? Also, I would love to chrome the rims or buy chrome stock replacements. Is that possible?
I ran Michilen pilot super sports with 265 on front and 285 on rear and they fit great. I thought they were a great tire for the car. Atleast for about 500 miles, before the car was totaled. They are on the expensive side though.
if you search online you can find a company that offers a chrome wheel exchange. You send them yours they send you a set of factory rims that have been chromed presumably by them.

The fact that your tires are wearing unevenly indicates that the car definitely does need an alignment. There's more to an alignment than just whether the car tracks straight, and there are a variety of ways that a couple of different parts of the alignment being out of spec could kind of cancel each other out and allow the car to track straight even though the alignment is crap.
Without knowing a budget, your intended usage, or your priorities (long tread wear? quiet ride? wet traction? dry traction? cornering grip? low rolling resistance for better mileage? etc) there's really no point in offering any suggestions.
I have this issue with one of my front Continental Extreme Contact DW's.
I had been noting a "whirring" sound, most likely drivers front, and was not looking forward to having to swap a wheel bearing (not that it's difficult, just another thing on my bucket list of things to do in a timeframe I really don't have).
Anyway, late fall, I swapped out my DW's for my DWS's (as temps were getting colder here in Chicago), and the noise went away completely.
FWIW discount tire direct via ebay is running a promotion 100 off of 400 or more from March 4-17 if you are ready to pull the trigger. The coupon is stackable with manufacturers dicount. Like 4 Hankook v12 evos around 686 which I am planning to run next.
Just because it runs straight doesn't mean your alignment is good you could have toe in issues that would affectvtire wear. I'd have it checked when you get the new tires..there's been a post about proper alignment for sts Vsdi a search here. I'll see if I can find it too.
Scan Ebay, Tire Rack, OnlineTires.com, and Discount Tire for deals on "new" tires of 5-yr. old manufacture. I p/u some new old stock Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 in size 265/40-19 for the TOTAL of $245 because they were 2010 manufacture from seller Carshoez on Ebay. Tire Rack was also selling this tire for $245.00/ea in 2010 manufacture, or $380.00/ea if current manufacture if I recall. Online-tire has my Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric rears in size 285/40-19 coming for $660 total shipped, or $110 LESS THAN either Tire Rack or Discount tire offered ($774), but I have to wait 4-6 weeks for them to ship as they weren't in stock (Rack has then in stock).

Didn't want to run Goodyears, but the Conti DW model I was interested in, after hearing so much about it, isn't made in widths 265 and 285, and finding that $245.00 deal for BOTH of the F1 Supercar G:2 fronts shipped forced me to. The "extreme summer perf" F1 Supercar G:2 265 fronts aren't made in the 285 rear size required, so to keep the sidewall's looking the same I ordered "max Summer perf" Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics.
