View Full Version : Can I fix all of these myself? weister42 02-28-06, 04:20 PM In persue to fix every glitches in my car I have to do the following:
1. Replace all 8 injectors
2. Clean throttle body
3. Clean EPR valve
4. Change coolant and tranny fluid
5. Find out why my car's fuel trim is at -7
6. Find out why my air intake temperature is at -40
7. Check Crank Position Sensor and replace if needed
8. Replace top engine mounts(the two dog bone looking thing)
9. Find out how my car stereo did #5 and 6
The dealership told me to change the tranny fluid I have to replace 3 different filters also. I don't have much tools but I can get some if it's reasonably cheap. Can I do all this myself? Local mechanics are going to charge me up the bumhole for all of this work. Depending on your skill level, most of it is pretty easy. I would add that there are only two screens in the trans when you drop the pan. They do not need to be replaced. At 100K mine where perfectly clean, though I flushed them with kerosene, blew them out and reinstalled them. There is a filter inside somewhere that only gets replaced on full teardown. The gasket is reusable as well.
Why are you replacing all 8 injectors? It is rare that one goes bad, much less all 8 at the same time.
You eluded to a crankshaft position sensor. Be advised, there are two. weister42 03-01-06, 02:58 AM One shop told me that all of my injectors are seeping gas when the engine is warm, I can't tell if he's lying or not because he was really nice about it and showed a faulty injector from a 93 N* to show me. No mechanics gave me a straight answer except this one. If you have 8 leaky injectors, you should sell the car and walk because your luck has run out. Get another opinion. 96chasedeville 03-14-08, 01:40 PM I realize this thread is ridiculously old, but it's on topic......
I have a 96 N* Deville, my mechanic tells me i have a leaking injector after i had him look at it for hesitating to start sometimes when its warm. I thought it was the fuel pump and it wasnt.....
aren't you supposed to change all the injectors if you can? they prolly could use it anyway as it has 100k on it and i never changed them, got it with 70k on it.
and is this a pretty easy job, i am handy and have the tools i think i need. anything special that needs done other then remove old injectors and replace with new and close it up?
TIA,
Chase submariner409 03-14-08, 03:09 PM Chase, Take a look at www.rockauto.com (http://www.rockauto.com) , enter your car, and drill down to the fuel/air....fuel injector list. If you feel like spending $450 for a new set, go for it. BUT, there are cars running around in here with 175,000 miles and all the injectors are fine.
You'll also need a set of injector O rings, because by now your lower seals have time-hardened and will need to be replaced for peace of mind if nothing else. There's a kit in ^^ there, too.
Simple job. If you can unplug 8 electric connectors, 2 or 3 nuts, and lift, you're OK.
Just keep it all clean and DO NOT drop anything into the open ports.
BTW, Don't mix up the spark plug wires. Mark everything with a Sharpie. misfit6794 03-14-08, 03:10 PM Sometimes hot starts are caused by a bad fuel pressure regulator. Its a VERY easy thing to check and replace if necessary. There is a write up with pictures in tech tips, I would try that before you start pulling injectors. Run a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment through your gas tank first, if it makes a big difference then I'd think about changing the injectors. Injectors are pretty reliable. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They get clogged like everything else in the fuel system. They also have springs that wear out like every other mechanical part in the universe too. Having said that, I agree that they are pretty reliable, and I would only advocate replacing them if you can demonstrate that there is a fuel system problem. And then only R & R the bad one(s). mtyler7807 03-15-08, 09:37 AM Injectors are pretty reliable. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Listen to Ranger, I have 284,000 miles on my deville runs like a dream. No engine replacement or tranny replacement. If is hesitating on startup check your PCV vavle or for and air leak. The little rubber connector ends on the air lines on top of the intake dry up and crack. Find an old set of spark plug wires and take the right angled rubber end off ( it is on pretty good use a pair of pliers) and use the as the connector. Works great. 96chasedeville 03-18-08, 01:59 PM thanks guy, guess ill be replacing 1 injector and rubber, and checking everything else you all mentioned. I had forgot when i first got it i cleaned the egr out, which means i have had the injectors out before...lol i have the steel FR, so it had to come out to remove the EGR
EDIT: Should i go for the AC DELCO injector, or does it matter? submariner409 03-18-08, 05:24 PM Yes, and yes, it matters. 96chasedeville 03-18-08, 05:29 PM Thanks for the support! ordering now! MisterBlue 03-18-08, 09:47 PM Clean the throttle body???
But, nothing goes through it but air? I wouldn't think it'd ever get dirty or clogged unless you ran without an air cleaner for 5 or 10 years! :o Lithorian 03-19-08, 01:08 AM its the EGR that dirties it up 96chasedeville 03-23-08, 03:45 PM well i have the injectors and rings now, when i install i will clean up the egr and TB. i have these few codes and know what they mean but what would you do to replace? heres my noobx guesses
