Hello,
This question will show you I'm no mechanic, or know very much about my ac compressor.
Am I correct in thinking when my ac is completely out of 134a, which it is. The compressor will lock up and the engine will have a hard time to start?? What I mean is, the engine seems like it can't turn over because of the ac compressor keeping the pully belt from turning. I once was able to get about 2 cans of 134a in and the car started. When It did, the belt made a heavy draging sound and big squill and started. The compressor is very noisy. Since the compressor runs out of 134a very fast, the car once again won't start. Is there a way to unlock the compressor without removeing it. I'm holding on for at least 2 months before I buy a new compressor. Just laid off from job. Thanks. 96 caddy deville.

No, you are completely misinformed. The compressor has an electromagnetic clutch on the front, which is driven by the belt. When the comprerssor is low enough on freon to cause damage, the clutch is disabled, thus disabling the compressor. If your car will not start, perhaps the clutch bearing is shot and dragging very bad. It should be free wheeling so to speak. You can check out if this is the problem by putting the 1/2" square drive lug of a breaker bar in the 1/2" square hole on the backside of the belt tensioner. Use the breaker bar as a lever to take just enough tension off of the belt so that it slips and have someone try to start the car. If it starts, that is your problem. You could also remove tension (engine off) and reach down and try to spin the clutch pully by hand. It should spin easily and quietly.
