: Eliminating Brake Squeak & Dust

Just wanted to share my experience with anyone that is unhappy with brake noise or dust...

I have approximately 33,000 miles on my car and drive it every day regardless of weather conditions.

Over the past 15,000 to 20,000 miles the brakes developed a squeak that in stop-and-go traffic would run you out of the car. Not to mention all the brake dust on the wheels. We tried several different things here at the shop to try and eliminate it. Anything that we did would eliminate it briefly but it would always come back just as bad as it always was. Following the "bedding" procedure for the pads would also eliminate it for a brief amount of time.

I decided to try a set of Hawk HPS pads. I installed them at approximately 30,000 mile and what a difference.

First, there is almost no brake dust. The pictures I attached of are of my wheels unwashed for the past 3 and 1/2 weeks. I've driven about 2,500 miles and as you can see in the pictures there is almost no brake dust. With the original pads my wheels would be black at this point.

Second, no squeak or squeal. After driving the car 2,500 miles through varying conditions (open highway, traffic, rain, snow) there hasn't been any squeaking or squealing coming from the brakes.

If you are unhappy with brake noise or dust I would highly recommend these pads. Plus I know where you can get them at a great price with great service... Right here http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=599892#post599892

I also installed a set of the cross-drilled GM rotors, only because the rotor hats on my OEM rotors were covered in rust and I'm too lazy to go through the whole process of removing the rust and painting the hats.

Crap... just had new stock pads installed at my dealer. I was in a bind and didnt want to risk a long trip with the old ones.

Well the price is right.
And to think how embrassing it is to hear my brakes when I come to a stop.
Or have to wipe off the brake dust everyday.

I agree with James. I just got Hawk HPS put on my car as well, and its a night and day difference. There is absolutely no brake dust, my FX45 has more, and the squeal comes at times, but nowhere close to the stock pads. I only get a squeal when the car is cold and am coming to a slow slow slow stop. Once everything warms up, the squeal goes away. I highly recommend getting these, and they are even cheaper than the OEM brake pads (I checked last time as the dealership wanted 1400 for my brake pads and rotors). I do not recall where I got them from, but I believe for all 4, i paid less than 300 for my pads. The rotors didnt need changing, thanks to Barak, so I saved big money on those. GET THE HAWK HPS!!!!!!!

Cool! That's great news. My new wheels are nearly BLACK (which ironically, is a cool look, but not the one I was going for).

Not sure when I'll need a new set of pads, but this is good info.

James,

You're so full of crap! You're far from lazy. More like tired from busting your ass on everyone else's car to the point where you have little energy to work on your own. I can tell you this, if you were my supporting dealer I may still be in a Cadillac.

Not a fix.... But worth a mention. I have applied several coats of wax to my rims, the brakes dust comes right off with a quick water rinse... No scrubbing.

Sounds great! Any noticeable difference in stopping power or fade??If there is any difference at all, it's on the initial application of your brakes. To me, it feels like you have to press a little harder on the brake pedal to get the initial bite. Once past that, I think they stop even better then the OEM pads, if that can be possible...

Count me in. These OEM pads are driving me nuts. I don't think I saw a price on the cross-drilled rotors anywhere on this post. What's the price on those, if interested?
