: My custom sub and amp box build process with pics.

Ok, i mentioned a couple weeks ago that Im going to attempt to make my own box. Keep in mind I have never built anything in a car before, but I've worked with fiberglass for about 6 years now on various projects.

I got screwed on ebay when I purchased a bunch of focal speakers, it took me 2 weeks to get my money back from Payal after a claim. Anyway, a friend suggessted I try Phoenix Gold Octane-R speakers. They're cheap so no loss really.

In the box will be 4 Directed 15" woofers, 1 Directed 2400 watt mono amp. 1 PG 500 watt 4 channel, a 20 Farad Digital Cap and a bunch of LED's.

Here is the frame I built last night. Now I gotta go get some fleece and few other ingredients and I should tackle it this weekend. Oh.. and the Gucci fabric is on the way!

Looks like its going to be a good set up, For me I finally broke down and got some bass installed yesterday. Fosgate amp with 2 p2 12's in a box. Amp installed under the 2nd row seat with the box in the very back. Also have the bass control knob located in the front. He also made it so I can unplug the rear box easy. Sounds good and looks good. Its just what I wanted. I will post some pics later.

Nice. Keep us updated. 1 question, once you fiberglass it can you remove the system or is it permanent?

Nice. Keep us updated. 1 question, once you fiberglass it can you remove the system or is it permanent?Well, the plan is for a removable box. But, When I start glassing it who knows what will happen, I have tendencies to get carried away sometimes and go overboard, but Im gonna try and keep it so its removable. Only thing that will make it semi-permanent is if I decide to mold it into the shape of those two humps in the back on the sides.

If I ever do remove it after its done, its not going back in! This thing will be so heavy when its done.

maybe this is a stupid question but is that as good as a traditional box? I mean is it gonna be as "sturdy". 4 of those subs are gonna be pumping, it wont create a problem being just fiberglass would it?

mikeee
02-21-06, 05:14 PM
maybe this is a stupid question but is that as good as a traditional box? I mean is it gonna be as "sturdy". 4 of those subs are gonna be pumping, it wont create a problem being just fiberglass would it?No, its an excellent question.

The base frame is wood. The fiberglass will pull it all together and harden it all up to be one solid piece. Im not stopping there because youre right, the 4 woofers will tear that shit up. So Im going to use something called "Kitty Hair Bondo" and go over it from the inside. plus im going to bondo on top of the glass to make it smooth enough to wrap. By the time Im done with it, you will need a jack hammer to tear it apart. And I figured the bondo inside will be so thick it will take up some air space, so I built it so that the entire box will share the air space under the amps too.

I cant wait to turn this thing on, it should hit super low and shake the ground, I hope!

Next set of pics you should see the plexi LED rings Im making for the woofers. Sorry about the pic quality, camera phone.

OK. Tomorrow is the big day, the box gets put in the truck to get the sides molded in. So hopefully 24 hours from now I will be posting pics of it in the truck. I got all the plexy pieces cut for the woofer rings and the amps and cap. All plexi will be barely visible, but it will glow like no other. Ive got 200 LED's so no compromise. Also my cap has tons of LED's in it. Got the generic kick panels too, which will also get cut to fit and wraped. Only a few equipment pics today, and tomorrow Ill have the juicy stuff.

I can't wait to see it finished. This will be awesome!

And how much of this box did you do? Wood, fiberglass, gucci, etc.? And who did you purchase that designer fabric from? I got the hook up on all designer fabrics, from Louis Vuitton to Fendi. We've chosen to do Louis Vuitton in my Escalade. But no pictures yet...

But can't wait to see your box finished. Let us know how hard it hits. Did you do you add any kind of sound proof materials behind your door panels to eliminate rattling? We did this and makes big difference.

Thanks man, I really appreceate it.

Im doing all the work. In my backyard and in the garage depending on the weather. I was gonna go with Louis, but I did a cheesy move and asked a bunch of people (mostly girls) and the majority liked gucci between the two.

I'll be adding dynamat to the doors when I install all the new speakers. The firewall is done and the back is done including the tailgate. My last truck had dynamat on every square inch of it and it really does help, but the escalade is much better insulated than my old truck anyway so Im not doing the roof and floor this time.

I'll definetaly update, Im waiting on my brother to get here because this thing got so heavy, I cant lift it on my own. I'm gonna be putting it in the truck to mold the sides in and make the insets for the woofer plexi rings. Hopefuly Ill have the pics up tonight.

If your into sound quality I would definetly recommend using dynamat extreme with another layer of extremeliner for AT LEAST the front seats up to the firewall. Road noise and that drone will kill your sound. Dynaxorb behind your door panels is a must. If you want that loud deep ghetto bass then deadening your trunk will give you some more db's as well. If your into show then forget all the deadening. I drive mostly freeway so my car is deadened the hell out of.

I'll get pics up ASAP. My DA Sander died on me last night so I couldnt mold the insets or the sides. I tried sanding by hand but after 20 minutes my arms were on fire. Just got back from store with a new Sander, so Im heading out there now to finish what I didnt do last night, and I have the camera with me! Probably be done late around midnight or so.

Looks tight. When are you throwing in the amps/speakers???I'm hoping this week. I dont know if you all recall, but I mentioned in my first post that wiring is a nightmare for me, so Im gonna have to get help. So if I can get my buddy to break away from work, we should be able to get it done this week.

All that on your own is pretty damn good, so a break is well deserved and probably moreso of a necessity at this point.

It looks awesome, though.I've considered doing things of this sort, but I dont think I could do away with all the cargo area. I use mine for camping/hauling shit....
Here come in a couple months I might be buying another truck I cause use for that good stuff. And in the meantime I am getting all sorts of ideas :).

That Gucci looks phenomenal, though. Especially with the black truck.

Last night I mounted 2 amps and the cap. They're sitting on frosted plexi bases with LED's underneath. Camera phone so pics are kinda weak, but you will get the idea. Every woofer will have plexi rings so the woofers will have a blue Halo around them as well.

Thanks.probably a month to be fully installed and functional. Unfortunetaly with my new house and having almost zero furniture, the box is at the bottom of my list right now. I only work on it maybe once a week.

Looking very nice!

But why did you put the speakers in like that versus the regular way? Thanks man. I like the look of the inverted woofer. Also to get a little more air space inside the box.

Spittin Game
05-08-06, 12:45 AM
Does it hit as hard though? I mean they are facing inward into a closed box, not outward.

Sorry for the dumb ?'s but Ive always had just regular boxes nothing custom like that. Although I would LOVE to do that for mine, I should look into how to do that.

mikeee
05-08-06, 12:50 AM
The box isnt wired yet. So I havent turned them on.

Yeah, lots of people will give you different opinions about inverting woofers, but I think theres not that much difference. the extra space will let the woofer hit lower and deeper. I know this box will shake everything around like an earthquake.

ahh man too bad not in cali. when will u have it wired up and ready to sub?Its wired. Its done. Subs are banging. Its 1am here and I just got done. Just need to tune it in the morning and plug in the kick panels. I took it for a ride to test the woofer, it hit harder than my last truck which had Eight 15's. Unbareable. Ill get some video footage soon. Anyone in TX going to Mean Streets car show this saturday hit me up, Ill be in slot 193. Goodnight!
