: Parental RANT

This is just a rant, if you don't have kids you may not fully get this...

The other night I decided to take my 5-yr old daughter to see a movie. Shortly after the movie started she had to go the bathroom. I escorted her to the lobby and desperately sought a “family” bathroom. I asked one of the workers there if such a thing existed and he pointed me towards the Men’s/Women’s restroom.

So here are my quandaries –

Do I take a 5-yr old girl into a men’s room – which I don’t think is appropriate.

Do I let a 5-yr old girl to into the ladies room by herself – which I don’t think is appropriate (safety and hygiene reasons),

What if I have to go to the bathroom??

What do I do with my 5-yr old daughter when I have to use the restroom?? Or vice versa depending on your gender.

If more places that advertise family fun would include family bathrooms then 2 of my 3 issues would be solved. I don’t even recall Chuck E Cheese, the kid Mecca, having a family restroom. Kudos to Disney for having family restrooms – at least someone there was thinking.

I am not a single parent but there are times my daughter and I like to go do things while my wife stays home or does things she likes to do. How in the world do single parents manage these situations?

This is a very frustating situation for me as I am very protective of my daughter and am not going to send her into a restroom alone (at this age) or leave her while I go to the restroom.

It is probably different for a boy to be taken into a ladies room than a girl to a men's room. Ladies rooms don't have urinals - that I know of and based on my assumptions a ladies room would be much cleaner than a men's room - although my wife has had some stories to tell about ladies rooms. Yet I cannot imagine how a ladies room toilet would get as dirty as a mens room.

I dunno...
:hmm:

Yeah you would THINK the ladies restroom would be cleaner but it's definitely not. I have no idea why, and I have no idea what somie women are thinking, but sometimes it can be pretty gross. It depends where you are though, like in my building at work all the bathrooms are constantly spotless...Anyway maybe you could take her into the mens restroom but take her straight to the stall, and as you are walking in you have her face away from the urinals (if possible). I don't know...

FSU, based on my 30-year old experience as a housekeeping porter in a large suburban mall when I was going to college, ladies rooms are, by and large FAR MORE DIRTY than men's rooms. By dirty, I mean T/P and tissue all over the floor, etc etc. Women are fastidious by nature, which means they pull about 30 feet of paper towel out to dab their lipstick, then toss it on the floor because they don't want to 'touch' the wastebasket...plus there's that whole issue of the toilet seat - miles and miles of TP pulled out to drape all over it, and then they crouch 4 inches over it anyway..

So much for the cleanliness issue. Given your situation, I would have asked for a female employee of the theater to accompany your daughter into the Women's rest room. If none was forthcoming, I would have pitched a bit** at the manager, demanded my money back, and made it known that their establishment would be getting a scathing review on the CadillacForums message board...

Thats what you think now.... :)

My mom used to bring me into the womens bathroom when I was really young, then I went to the mens room alone as i got older.

all the girls I talk to always say the womens bathroom is much worse then mens... who knows.

most men take there daughter right into the mens room ....

more then once ive been taken by surepise by this little face peering under the wall from the stall beside me while im doing my busness.....(and now franticly trying to "cover up")

a guy like me who has no kids or anything sort of feels awkawrd at that moment ....

but in this day in age i wouldnt trust no one with my kid .....if it were my kid , regardless of gender i would walk the little lady in there , put her in her stall (after spary disinfecting the area) and stand outside as if i was gaurding the toumb of the unkown solider ....

beatter get used to it , from what i hear your eye balling the age where the little ones have to see every bathroom ever made ....just for the fun of it ....

I would go ahead and take her into the mens room. Just bring her right into a stall and try to make as little of it as possible. If she ask questions answer as honestly as possible. JimHare suggested getting another female employee to do it that would be something I could not do. There are just to many sick people in this world and just because they are employed doesn't mean they are mentally right, and something could definitely happen in 5 minutes time. As far as the family restrooms I agree 100% it would be fantastic if all places had them that was a family atmosphere I know most malls have them as well. It just makes it some much easier for all parents.

It is, believe me.... I used to spend weekends at my exgirlfriend's college with her and she lived on an all girl floor with a floor bathroom which I had to use as well. Girls I guess from terrible aim when squatting will miss, and miss terribly. Guys may hit the back of the tank or get some one the seat, but Jesus... Anyway... I'm through grossing everyone out.....

Sorry, didn't mean to "leave you hangin'" (probably an unintentionial bad pun in a bathroom related thread :canttalk: )...

She did go after a few minutes of hovering around the women's room and making the determination that no one else had gone in or come out I allowed her to go in by herself. Fortunately the theater was not too crowded and I did stand watch outside the door - could hear her speaking to me from inside the bathroom.

As for the parent-side of the coin - I did have to hold it until I got home... the CTS was flying home - traffic laws be damned - I had a valid excuse!

Hello...

Several years ago I found myself in the same situation.
I treated my 2 nieces and 3 other girls under the age of 5 for Birthday ice cream at the mall.
All was well until one of them saw the bathroom...then they all had to go.
I found a female employee who checked the Ladies room and when it was empty...
I stood in the open doorway to supervise.

I found it to be the only solution...
No way I'm taking 5 girls into the Men's room.
Yes, there needs to be more Family Restrooms.
