View Full Version : Strange Sound chiucheung 02-06-06, 12:53 AM Hi all, this is concerning a 98 Seville STS...I want to find out what may be causing a humming noise that seems to be coming from the driver's side front wheel. It gets more noticeable as the speed increases, as if a helicopter or motorcycle is approaching, and the sound slowly disappears as the car comes to a stop. Does anyone have experience with this? Swing the wheel left and right, like a Nascar driver warming his tires. Does it get louder when you turn right and quiter when you turn left? If so, it's a wheel bearing. It will get louder when it is loaded and quiet down when unloaded. eurumbaev 03-28-06, 11:21 AM Swing the wheel left and right, like a Nascar driver warming his tires. You've described my problem exactly! It seemed to me that my driver side bearing was bad, so I replaced it, and the noise is still there. If the problem you describe is present, which wheel bearing would be the bad one? I'm planning on replacing the other one anyway, but would like to know if it is the passenger one that's causing the noise when you turn right. Also have you experienced wabbling(feels like the car goes all over the place) at higher speeds, going over potholes, with the present condition? Especially noticable when on the turn and going over a bump, at high speed. caddydaddy 03-28-06, 11:33 AM It could also be the axle shaft. You've described my problem exactly! Left turn, car leans right and loads the right bearing. If the right bearing is bad it will get louder in a left turn and quieter in a right turn as the car will then lean left and unload the bearing. Just the opossite for the left bearing.
Not sure about "wabbling". That could be a seperated tire tread but would be more noticable at slow speeds. If you mean wandering, that may be a bad tie rod. Could be a bearing, but it would have to be very worn. eurumbaev 03-28-06, 03:32 PM Huh? Well I guess the noise must be comming from somewhere else. Could it be from the axle? The bearing that I did reaplace, left one, had some play in it. So I'm hoping that wandering, not "wabbling"(sorry), could be caused by that. New tires in the front. I'll post after I replace the other bearing. Thanks. thathondaboi 03-28-06, 10:02 PM Also have you experienced wabbling(feels like the car goes all over the place) at higher speeds, going over potholes, with the present condition? Your struts and shocks may need to be replaced. The shocks are supposed to keep the tire in contact with the road, and when they go bad, the tire just bounces over bumps, rather than absorbing them, so it creates a "wobbling" effect. eurumbaev 03-29-06, 10:30 AM I just recently replaced struts. Not new, but from a 40k car, struts seem to work well. | |
