: Returning from retirement .....

I layed down my wrenches professionally in 2003 ...Between my injury and my desire do go to college and do more with my life i vowed never to return .....

Things changed today ....

At work the bosses called me into the office. Apprently they (after 8 months) read my resume , and one of the bosses has heard many of my horror storys from the shops ive worked in ....."We know your back is screwed" they say "but we need a oil change guy" ....Coarse i say "nope i dont turn wrenches anymore".....follwed by "plus im not working for what you pay oil change guys"....So we talked more , basiclly how this goes is i come in , i build a system up to change oil in vehicles more effiecntly (currently there doing one oil change per 1.5 hours) , and i do them MY WAY .....Part of the deal was i named my pay rate , and i do oil changes to my standards , and i turn one every 30 minutes ....all the while checking the vehciles over like they should be. Ive told them i found it unacceptable that cars are leaving the shop with brakelights out and flat spares....

I also mentioned i want oil changes only , any other work will not be done by me , i am fairly sure i wont hurt my back changeing oil ....

Next monday i start this , and at weeks end we will all meet again , and dicuss how im feeling as far as my back and if i think i can keep going .....

The legend returns?

Sounds like it's worth a try, as long as they don't try to get you to cut corners. I'd trust you.

There you go Stoney, they're starting to realize( a little too late IMO) how valuable you are to the business. Have fun and enjoy yourself, make sure you keep your back protected so you don't aggravate anything.

Just take care of yourself...They seem to be pretty understanding and if they really DO let you do your own thing, you've got it made!

As one ex-mechanic to another, watch that back! Mine takes very little to cause me problems these days. Beyond that, congrats and have fun with it. I can't believe you actually had to talk them into doing oil changes that way. Are they stupid? LOF's are basically just loss-leaders anyway. Anyone with a brain would utilize them as a vehicle for generating sales. Lucky for them, at least SOMEBODY (you) has some brains around there.

Years ago i hated LOF's ...always pissed me off , one of those "id rather be doing XYZ"...all about the glory i guess

strange how this looks attractive to me nowadays , but i think this is a bit diffrent , ill be building a system , doing easy work , yet use all that experence ive been wasteing finding issues so we can make this a profitable situation .....

who knows if this turns out to be a sucess and i train the 2 guys they will get me once i get it sorted out , and make it run on its own itll be a nice feather in my resume cap ....

now if i can just turn them onto the "minor maintence" idea i keep pitching ....

who really wants to wait 2 hours to get wiper blades put on ????

So how much does the dealership charge for an oil change on a 4.9 when the customer supplies their own oil and filter? :)

Night Wolf

hell how much for a regular oil change? the '79 needs one coming up... not now but soon... made that trip own on this oil, and it gets dirty fast in that engine... don't like to go more then 3,000 miles... that has to be the most easy car to ever do an oil change on... location of the oil pan/drain plug and especially filter... my gosh, within minutes its done :).

Quaker State though eh? grrrr....

well see once i get established ....might be able to hook you up ...

i wouldnt even run the coupe with the oil thats in it right now ....get it running then get that oil out of there ....the water thats in there will make it foam up bad and turn to milk after you get it running ....so get it out of there ASAP ......

i mean like dont even drive it with that oil ....anywhere .....

Once I saw the underside of the butterfly valves, and it was a whiteish paste/milky substince... that really made me rethink changing the oil...

it just sucks so bad I JUST did the oil change... I mean JUST did it.... 95% oil life remaining on the OLM... not even 7 days ago.... ugh. $100 in a week on oil... on the same car... what fun.

They say they don't allow people to work on their cars in the parkling lot, but oh well, too bad I gotta to the plugs/wires.... MAYBE I'll do the oil change in the parking spot tomorrow.... I have my drain pan and stuff here.. my ramps are up in High Springs since I figured I woudln't need them, but I do have my mini floor jack and jack stands here, which is a PITA but doable (as I have done it before)....

Actually, I don't have the money for the oil change right now... I'll be getting money by Tesuday or Wednesday... so I'll try to get it running with the plugs/wires tomorrow.. if it runs, I'll be happy and drive the '79 for the time being, shes got a full tank of gas (well, did before today, lol) THIS is why I really like having 2 cars... on the road... at my disposal... it is SO convienent.

I mean, I can do an oil change on the Coupe in 20mins from start to finish, and its pulled nose-in in the parking spot... the only people that work here that would see me are the older maintenace guys that drive the golf carts... they are all really cool, and like me, so I don't think they'll bother me... I'll just have to make sure I keep oil spillage to a minium (oil filter on the 4.9 is impossible to do that though) but really, the 4.9 and 425 both leak oil, and there is already oil on the ground now, so it woudln't be much different :).

One thing the Coupe does need..... is a new PRNDL switch. It will not turn over at all in neutral, and I don't like that at all. I always get the code for faulty PRNDL switch as well to the point I stopped resetting it because I am tired of seeing the SES light come on.... I don't know how much that is, but it looks to be RIGHT under the cross over pipe... AKA a royale PITA to replace, which is why I said frig that... if in fact its that hard, that'll be a dealer/shop repair... if I can do it myself, I will.

Warmest Regards to All:

Stick to the plan Sir Mike;
pay the bills first, then go

Dental hobby shop was only matched in inadequacy by the medical hobby shop. How many bottles of 800mg Motrin can you hand out as a cure????
