How do you determine what year and type of Northstar this engine is on EBAY. I dont know how to read the markings on the block.

Year: 96-99

Type: no idea, you'd have to bring the "6TU..." number to a dealership to get the full vin, including the 8th engine digit (Y or 9)

Definately a VIN 9...I can tell you it's not out of a 96 ETC or 97 STS though...if that helps.

So basically a no go for my 96?

Go take that block stamp number to a dealer and ask them what it's out of. They can even tell you the mileage.

It will work for any car 96-99, of the correct VIN. The only potential difference is in the fuel rail, where some are straight, some are curved down, some are curved up. If you swap your old one on, that's not a concern.

*err, looks like it's new. If that's the case, it's not out of a car, but they should still be able to identify it. If they say it came from a certain car, then you know it's definately not new.

the large 9 means its for a VIN 9 Caddy aka an STS or ETC

Do you know that with 100% certainty? As far as I know, there are only 2 distinguishing characteristics on a 300hp northstar. One is the VIN derivative stamp on the block, the other is the lift of the intake cams.

A call to the Caddy shop ought to shed some light on this.
