: Paint Color Names?

Here's a question for you guys, especially maybe someone with original sales brochures: What are the names for different Cadillac paint colors?

I'm trying to figured out what the name is for the red that my car and Dopestar's is painted. I've heard it was called Firemist, is that correct? Anyone know what colours 80s Broughams were offered in? What about 1990s FWB? Hmmmmmmm!

Spout your colorful knowledge, you colorful characters.

Here in Nova Scotia, I have personally seen 80s Broughams in these colors: White, red, tan, brown, gold, silver, black, baby blue, navy blue and a dark maroon or burgandy colour. I'm pretty sure Cadillac actually refers to that last color in their brochure as "darkish purpley with maroon-esque qualities." ahhah

Firemist Grey was black in some light, dark grey in others. Nice color, in 1985, they charged $200+ extra to have it. With red pinstripes it is a sharp color.

I have the full dealer brochure for 89 but they don't list any colors. I did however on ebay once see the color book. See if you can find one. I know in 89 there were two firemist colors and I have one of them. Mine's Metallic Red Firemist, the other was a light blue.

Hi,

I have a ton of color charts although they are at my place in Wisconsin and I'm now in Florida. I'll be back to Wisconsin for a few days in a couple of weeks and will get you all the names of the Brougham colors if you haven't gotten them by that time.

awesome car pimpin' 88. has a nice ride height. love the mudflaps, i'd like a set for mine.

Dave thanks for the help, it'd be interesting to know what GM named these shades.

This Firemist, what exactly does it mean? Is there anything special about the paint? or is it just a flashy name they attached to some colours?

Mine is Moonstone Metallic. It is dis-continued at Cadillac. Couldn't get it there, Autozone or either of some of the sites I found here. But... I did find it just now and ordered it. A touch up pen. Should be good for sratches first, then bigger areas like the chips on the front end. http://www.expresspaint.com/?ovmkt=OBEJRKILQ0CAU2CNRBILV2F158&OVRAW=Auto%20Paint&OVKEY=auto%20paint&OVMTC=standard

For 1989 these were the colors:

Cottillion White
Silver Frost
Academy Gray
Pearl Gray
Sable Black (mine)
Glacier Blue
Diplomat Blue (very nice)
Cream Beige
LT. Beechwood
Bordeaux Red

Monarch Blue Firemist
Autumn Maple Firemist

The Firemist colors were extra charge and metallic, all colors could have the matching padded roof.

According to the RPO codes I found on the net, my 91 is "Victory Red". But it looks almost like your 89. I don't think mine's a Firemist color, tho.

Check the RPO codes on your '89 against the list for "Modern Day GM Option Codes" at: http://www.c2e.info/rpocodes/MODERNGMRPO.html

I've found at least three different listings for my '94 FWB which is Light Driftwood, Mesa Brown or Frost Beige, depending on where I look. The original brochure lists Frost Beige as the correct color, but its all essentially a marketing thing. :hmm:

Great info guys, all helpful. I finally got around to decoding my trunklid sticker tonight. My paint related finds are as follows.

My car has:

89U : PRIMARY COLOR, EXTERIOR, AUTUMN MAPLE MET (91)
YL2 : PAINT SPECIAL, FIREMIST
55A : STRIPE COLOR, ACCENT, GOLD (91)

How exciting! haha, told me what I wanted to know though. Never would've guessed how much info that sweet sticker had on it. Thanks for the help my friends. I'm loving this forum! :gnome:

Well, my RPO has "74U", which, best I can figure from the RPO lists on the net, should be "Victory Red". So I got a Victory Red touch-up brush. Tried it on one little spot. Not even close. Victory Red is, well, like RED! My car is more of a bronze color. The vinyl top and the inside trim colors are "Dark Maple Red". I now am totally clueless. Any hints? Was there a "Dark Maple Red" exterior color in 1991? Thanks, Tom

AHA! I wrote to Cadillac customer service about my car's color. They researched it, and the response is that in 1991, the "74U" RPO code was called "Victorian Red", not "Victory Red". Perhaps now I might be able to find an accurate touch-up paint somewhere.

I was told the color of mine was called "Evergreen", and ive never seen one other than mine in real life, only on an episode of Cops. It's gonna really suck if thats not the actual name of that color, seeing as how its my user name.

Also, have any of you guys seen a dark green fleetwood brougham with a light green top?Ive heard its the rarest color, but i really dont know.

Need a cocktail...will get to the 1970's colors next!

Just drove back from Florida to Wisconsin in the 1979 Sedan deVille d'Elegance. The car drove just perfectly and is a few hundred miles away from turning 70k. It also started perfectly this morning and the temp was 20 below zero F!

Aspen green is really light - like a silver green. Sage green is darker. Don't worry about your user name since you still have a very rare color for that car!

It must be sage green,it is a very dark green.Im going to put up some pics as soon as i get my new bumpers on,i was rear-ended by a ford f-150 a couple months back and it wrecked the whole bumber and taillight assembly(trunk and fenders got away without a scratch) along with my front bumber, because the impact was so much that it shoved me into the car in front of me.Luckily my buddy has a old 88 brougham he's selling for cheap($800),so im going to pick that up and part it out for its bumbers and the dark wood grain interior pieces(i have the light woodgrain)once i pay my rent. Then you guys can see my beautiful SAGE green Brougham

yeah, ive always known it was pretty rare.Ive never seen another one,i thought i saw one in the background on a episode of Cops, and my buddy told me he saw one once, but i dont know. What would be really nuts is if someone had a way of finding out the production numbers for each color of each year,i know the information is out there somewhere.

You love that car! Here are some old pictures of it that I took shortly after buying it and before changing the wheels. It's a 1981 Fleetwood Brougham Coupe with 236k miles and working (sort of) V8-6-4. I have owned this car for a little over two years and have driven it maybe 3k miles. Have fun! Dave

03-16-06, 08:49 PM
Thanks! It now has alloy wheels from a 93-96 Fleetwood Brougham on it and it looks great! I am guessing on the mileage only because a CARFAX I ran a couple of years ago had emmissions testing showing mileage in the low to mid 100k range so I am thinking the car is in the 200k range now. It's pretty clean inside and out for the age and miles. I'll get it cleaned up and post more pictures sometime soon.

I know my 88 d'elegance's official color is copper beige. I worked at a dealership that has a body shop and they made me up a can of touch up paint for it.. I have a 2 tone tan interior with the velure pillowtop seats and the shag carpet.. I dont know what color scheme that is considered.

Hi,

The color of your car is most likely #57 Light Beechwood. That is the only color that is beige/copper/brown in 1988.

2 Short "Color Stories" ~

#1. 1975 color #77 Roxena Red.
Man who has something (?) to do with the color department also had a couple of classic Caddies at home. Frequently he'd be seen up his driveway washing or otherwise caring for them. Frequently he'd see a very attractive female walk by walking her dog. This one day, they met & began talking. He asked her name. She responded by saying it's an unusual name, it's Roxena. He said "I'll name a Cadillac color after you, for next year (this was in 1974), thusly "Roxena Red". Story goes that she didn't believe him, until she recieved a 1975 Cadillac Color Chip Chart in the mail.
(all I know) ~

#2. 1981's Code # 32 "Pepper Green Metallic".
THE RAREST STANDARD COLOR, ever put on a Caddy! The color was in production one week. That being in early August of 1980. It was then cancelled. Nobody knows how many were made, but the number I had heard thru my contact was "under 60" ~

Ok, here's a question. In '79 how rare was Colonial Yellow?

Benzilla
10-13-06, 02:25 AM
I don't think it was that rare, I've seen a lot of light yellow ones, but there was also the beige color, which looked very close, so probably some of them were that.

Still a very nice color :) very fresh looking with the matching interior.

Dopestar,

I've recently been to a Mustang show and displayed in the windshield of many of the cars was information about how many Mustangs were produced for that particular year with the color and interior color combination. For example, there were "X" number of "factory color name" red with "factory color name" white interior. That was so cool. I would love to figure out where that type of information is for my Brougham. Mine's the Antelope Firemist Metallic with the Antelope Sierra Grain leather interior.

If any one out there knows where to get this detailed information on Cadillacs, I'd love to know about it. Thanks.

Hi,

I can't find the 1978 info right now. There are a couple of Phaeton fanatics on this forum who may know the answer such as Benzilla who has a 1979 Phaeton and he is very interested in them. From memory, I seem to remember the 1978 model was only available in one color combination and I'm thinking it was white with black or possibly blue top. Who knows for sure?

Dave

Benzilla

The 1978 colors were white with dark blue top and white leather (same as the '79 white) Platinum metallic with black top, red pinstripe, and light grey interior( I know a guy that has one... drool). And finally, Arizona Beige with dark brown roof and beige interior. (very rare).

hold on, I'm uploading pictures!

Benzilla

It was also available as a sedan, but there was around 225 1978 Phaetons all together, so you almost never see '78 Sedans. I've seen a few '79s though.

Bro-Ham

2,400 Coupes, around 400 Sedans.

PAINT4CARS

First of all, if you want to know what color is on your car you can just get the color code and ask an automotive paint specalist (like me :cool2: ) to look it up for you.

The reason this is the best way is because:

1) The names of colors change over the years

2) There can be multiple names for the same color and multiple colors with the same name, i.e. Candy Apple Red, Robin Egg Blue, etc.

3) Dealerships tend to take the color names and "spice" them up to make it sound more attractive. Someone may be more likely to buy a car with "Super Volcanic Magma Fire Red Metalic" then just "Red Metalic". Plus it allows the dealership to charge you more for the "special" paint.

4) The name of your paint becomes even more useless if you want to fix a scratch or chip where an exact match is required. If you just look online for "Firemist Red", the color code you get thats attached to that name is not always the one on your car. It's a hell of a lot easier to just get your color code and VIN and ask someone like me. I can even tell you what alternate shade is on your car, what tints are in it, what concentration of metalic flake is in your color, etc.

So if anyone would like to know more than they ever imagined about their exact color I am here to help. Just send me your make, model, year, color code, and VIN and I will get back to you with all the info.

On newer Cadillacs the color code will be located in the trunk on the spare tire cover or in a compartment in the trunk. Look for a white sticker. If its an older Cadillac it can be in a few places including the window cowl where the windshield wipers are under the hood. Look for a metal tag. If you need help finding it just let me know.

I just want anyone who reads this to be well informed and know a good source for good information. I hope I've done a good job.

Sincerely,

-Mike

Hi,

If you look back to the color names with the code numbers listed in previous postings, I took the names out of the actual vintage Cadillac color chart brochure from each of the model years listed which lists the official Cadillac name for the color along with the color code number.

Dave

PAINT4CARS
01-24-07, 02:02 PM
I see that yes. I have the vintage color charts in front of me as well and the only thing I would go by is the color code. If the correct color code is used, which never changes, then you can not go wrong. If you use the color name for any validity then you run into problems. There are some colors that have a name which stays constant throughout the years but you can't count on that. If you actually want to know what color is on your car and a way to reproduce it in order to fix a scratch or chip then the color code is the only way to go. I know talking to someone and saying "Hey, I have code 8555 on my car" is alittle weird but it's certainly more accurate. And again, if you want to know anything about the color, what cars its on, for what years, what company actually produced the color originally, what tints are in it, how much metallic is in it, and how to get some in spraycan, paint pen, or touch-up bottle form, then the color code is the only way to go.

Hey man, you should post some pictures for sure! I'd love to see it. I'm the resident Phaeton nut here, I know pretty much everything about them...and nothing else lol. There's a guy in my part of the city that has a Platinum '78 like yours, but it's in really sad shape.(pushing 250,000 miles!) You're very lucky to have a '78. They were more of an early release of the '79 Phaeton that a recognised option itself. '78 brochures didn't even have the Phaeton option in them. And you have the original color for the Phaeton too. When the idea was cast, the color scheme was silver & black, they added the other colors later.(check the metal plate on your firewall, I'd like to know when it was made) And then when they finally put it into wider production in 1979 the first color it came it was Slate Gray Firemist with a black top (almost the same as yours) in fact, earlier '79 color charts like the one I have only show the black cloth top option with a note that other colors will be added later. However, oddly, you usually find Phaetons in the blue and white combo for sale more than any other color.

Post pics in the RWD section when you can!

By the was, I thought you might find this interesting, it's a postcard from early '78 that was sent out to prospective Cadillac buyers. It is also the only mention of the Phaeton until the 1979 brochure. Notice the colors.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c40/Cadillac_guy/B5307.jpg

And this, I found it in the Detroit museum. Note that it says 3000 Phaetons were made, that's combining both years (225 '78s + 2,400 '79 Coupes + roughly 400 '79 sedans = roughly 3000). And as it says, the Phaetons were made at the Clark street plant in Detroit.

Did you use polishing compound to make the color pop again? Did you do it yourself or have an auto body buff it out? What did you or they use? What a ride I love these cars!

Benzilla
02-06-07, 10:26 PM
lol, it's great to see somebody with as much enthusiasm as me for these cars. I did the paint myself. The sides just needed cleaner wax with a wool buffer pad (only use if very oxidised) the hood and trunk needed liquid polishing compound to look decent. I'm still planning on having it repainted next summer, just not quite shiny enough for me.

I can't wait to see yours!

Hi Ben,

I noticed that my 78 phaeton looks just like the postcard that you showed me. Neither has the fancy opera lights like our 79 has. Also the 78 has a temp gage under the side mirror and our 79 does not. The 79 has a better radio as well.

Spiro

Benzilla
02-19-07, 09:17 PM
Does it look like at some point it had opera lights? If it never had opera lights, that would make it a very early Phaeton, almost all of them had opera lights. The thermometer was optional on all Cadillacs, and has nothing to do with the Phaeton package, however it is relatively rare.

I really can't wait to see pictures of your caddies! At least give me a preview.

Ok, as I said, if it never had opera lights, that would make it a very early Phaeton, they added opera lights mid-1978.

Hi Bro, I hope I'm not too greedy. But is there any chance you may have the list of interior colors as well? Thanks to you I've learned my 1977 Coupe DeVille is Cotillion White. But when people ask " Are your seats orange?" I'd like to correct them with exact name. PS: The vinyl top is the same orange color. Thanks in advance.........Stan

Not sure who you're talking too, but I might be able to help. on my '79 CDV the orange-ish interior color is called antique saddle, I think in 1977 there was a color called saffron, that might be what you have. I don't know if there was more than one orange-ish color in '77.

Hi Stan,

Ben is right that the interior color that looks orange is called "Medium Saffron" in 1977. If the interior is leather the orange color is called "Antique Medium Saffron." The 1977 deVille could have four different kinds of upholstery: standard "Dynasty" cloth which is a ribbed fabric; another standard cloth was called "Aberdeen" which is plaid; leather upholstery which Cadillac had no fancy name for in 1977; and the d'Elegance cloth was called "Medici" in 1977 which was the classic crushed velour. All four 1977 deVille choices could be ordered in the Medium Saffron color.

Hope this helps!

Dave

My 1968 DeVille convertible colors:

Exterior: Arctic Blue (#20)
Top: White (#1)
Interior: Dark Blue leather (#366)

I have original brochures from 1965 through 2007 most list the colors but do not have the codes. I have color charts for 1967 thru 1972 as well. I also have a few dealer books from 1992-92 these have some color codes.

These are all at home while I'm away until the end of the month.

This link was in another paint thread so I thought I'd bring it over here. Visual samples of all the colors listed here from 55 and up.

Dope, The thread is useful to a degree but does not come close to accurately listing the names of the Cadillac colors as is claimed in the headline. The info I listed in in the previous posts to this thread are straigt from the factory produced color brochures and should be looked upon as the true names for colors and color codes for any enthusiast who wants the true names and codes for the colors. :suspense:I hope I'm on the right forum to ask this question, this is my first time posting here. I have a car other than my Caddy that the previous owner tells me that it is painted with a Cadillac color called Eggplant Purple, but he can't remember the year or model of Cadillac that the paint is for. I'm hoping someone here can give me a paint code for that color, I mainly need the paint for rock chips repair.

Thanks for any help.

Tom, There is a whole separate sticky thread at the top of the RWD forum, under RWD FAQ's, which is more current than the thread you're posting to right now. On that forum you should find the answer to this question and also see a picture of the 1979 official Cadillac color chart - about page 2 or 3 of that thread. I will post it below for you here now.

To answer your question, there are a few colors that appear to be copper for 1979 - you should look at the picture of the color chart to be certain which color it is you want the information on. On the back of the official Cadillac color chart there is a grid containing information on which vinyl top colors were offered with which exterior colors. From that information I've listed the colors that look copper to me with the compatible vinyl top color in parenthesis:

68 Burnished Gold (G Light Gold Metallic) - top color is lighter than body color.
91 Pottery Gold Firemist (G Light Gold Metallic) - top color is exact match to body color.
93 Cedar Firemist (Y Light Cedar Metallic) - top color is exact match to body color.
96 Western Saddle Firemist (U Saddle Metallic) - top color is exact match to body color.

Good luck!

Dave

Tom, Don't beat a horse. Just look at the top of the RWD forum under "RWD FAQ's" or some such "sticky" posting and you can open that up and see the saved thread about official Cadillac color codes.

This should be the link:
