There is a thumping noise when i hit the bump going up my driveway and sometimes i hear it when i turn to the right?? Anyone have any ideas on what it could be??

Also my front passenger window is getting very weak and a dealer told me a new motor for a 1990 deville is like 300 bucks. Is there something cheaper that would work for that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Landon

COULD BE A SHOCK OR STABILIZER BAR BUSHING . BOUNCE THAT SIDE REAL HARD BY HAND & HAVE SOMEONE WATCH UNDERNEATH. TRY EITHER www.rockauto.com (http://www.rockauto.com) OR A BONEYARD FOR YOUR WINDOW REGULATOR. GOOD LUCK

Thank you for the reply!!

One thing with the thump its only once in a while..is it going to hurt anything if i just let it go for a while to see if it gets worse?

Also thank you for the info on the window thats awesome!

I don't have advice, but I'm going to keep and eye one this one to see if anyone does. I have a 90 deville and one day it just started making a thump when hitting a bump. I changed struts, nothing. New tires, same. I took it to a local mechanic because he has the luxury of a lift. He said the car has over 100,000 miles. It will make some noise. I brought it to the best front end guy in my area. He could not find the cause. I brought it to the Cadillac dealer. They said it's one of the best condition 90's they have seen and nothing's wrong. Like I said, I'll be glad to hear opinions on this.

I have a similar situation in my 93. The cause is going to be one of the following things:

- Worn strut
- Worn strut bearing (allows the strut to rotate when you turn the steering wheel)
- Worn/broken stabilizer bar mount
- Worn ball joint
- Worn suspension arm bushing
- Worn outer tie rod end
- Broken suspension spring

I'm not looking forward to finding the noise in mine. The hard part is wiggling the suspension by hand in such a way as to recreate the noise so you can find it. Does the noise sound like it's coming from somewhere high in the engine bay, somewhere low, or can't you tell?

could be an axle

Couldn't this also be a hub bearing? I had this problem with my Taurus before. I'd do a visual inspection and make sure the bushings look good and that nothing is broken. Make sure the hub spins freely without any odd resistance.

same here in my 01 deville. The noise started after a huge pothole I drove into. The noise does not happen when I first start driving but comes on after a turn to the right. Then there is a thump on he left side sometimes light sometimes hard in sync with the tire rotating. I had a alignment but the thup is still there. I'll have it looked at this weekend in better detail and monitor the site to se if you guys can help also.

There are two items not mentioned in this thread that I have heard
to be common problems w FWD cadillacs.

1. Sway bar end connectors - small balll joint affair. - There is a thread that
details observation and repair tips.

2. Rubber Bisquit cap cushion that fits between unibody strut tower and the McPherson strut itself. Sad case sometimes occurs when owner has both front struts replaced at great expense and notices not one iota of improved ride and less noisey front end operation. Waste the BIG bucks and become very disappointed. The cushion's job is to somewhat dissapate the "jar" between road surface and not transmit the full force up into the body. When it cracks it just becomes a nuisssance noise at low speed bumps, driveways ,etc. Tip the noise usual sounds "high Up" under hood more pronounced at slow turn.

Some owners replace the cushions without replacing the struts. Mechanic may refuse to do the job w/o strut replacemenment. Talk to management.

These may be wrong ideas for your solution . Don't throw your money at the problem. Study the forum

C170B, that sounds VERY much like the noise I have! Thanks for that info! I'll need to look into what it would take to replace that part. I should probably do struts as well because they're worn.
