I've got a 1998 Deville with the stardard size tires (225/60R 16) on stock chrome wheels. When I turn the wheel most/all the way to the left the left front tire rubs on the back side of the wheel opening. (By back side I mean the area by the door hinge, if that make sense.) When I turn right this doesn't happen. The rubbing has happened enough times that it wore through the plastic fender liner.

I talk with a guy at the tire store and asked about a possible alignment problem. He said that was not it. The only thing he could suggest was that maybe I'd hit something with that wheel. Well, i haven't done that. I looked under it and don't see anything that is obviously bent.

What could the cause be and how can I repair it? Is there some way to see what's out of place?

Thanks,
Dan

Can you see where it is rubbing on the inside of the fender well? Is it possible that has come loose or something has broken? I believe the inner fender is nothing but plastic anyway. You might need to take the wheel off to look if you haven't done so by now.

Chances are if you hit something and caused some damage, it would show up on an alignment. Possibly the caster has been knocked out of whack.

My 98 Deville does the same thing, only it does it when I turn right going down a hill, I had the car checked out and the alignment is fine. Under the fenders are tight and not moving, the only thing I can think of is, there does not seem to be much room between the tire and the inner well, under braking, it may be shifting backwards, if that makes any sense....
