View Full Version : -89 deville died, wonīt start mastodontti 01-20-06, 11:23 AM Hi, first post in here, so i have this deville, with a 4.5 engine, and just so happened i was cruisin down the freeway, when at first it seemed to stall, but very quickly picked up, and went on just normal. Then it wasnīt long and it just died, not like going out of gas, but instantly went out. After this i was still able to get it promising a couple of times, after that nothing. It turns over nicely, i have checked power to the fuel pump fuse, switched another relay in place of the pumps one, and it also has a visible spark.
I just donīt seem to hear the fuel pump, i was under the tank where the fuel hoses start to go to the top of the tank, when the key was turned, isnīt it suppose to make a sound at this point, what do you think, should you hear the pumps sound from there?
Is the pump or itīs wires accessible from underneath the backseat, or is dropping the tank the only way, in case the problem is in there?
One thing has limited my approaches to find the problem, itīs cold as hell outside, -20 celcius, so thatīs like -4f If you open the fuel cap and have someone turn the key on, with your ear to the filler pipe you should be able to hear the fuel pump run for about 2-3 seconds. The best way to check it is to put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and see if you have any pressure. ElDawgg 2G 01-20-06, 05:42 PM Hello...
(Hyvaa Paivaa!)
(Finland is a great place...I've been as far north as Rovaneimi.)
When the fuel pump went out on my 89, it just quit...
Check for codes:
Push and hold "Off" and "Warmer" and codes will display on the fuel gauge.
Yes, you will have to drop the tank to change it.
Maybe you got some bad gas.
When did you last change the fuel filter?
It is located under the car forward of the rear wheel on the driver's side.
Post back your solution. mastodontti 01-20-06, 07:40 PM Thanks, (Kiitos Kiitos)
Never changed that fuel filter, there is about 15 liters in the tank according to the cauge, the gas is fresh though, the car is daily driven, but maybe there could be water in the tank.
Iīll have to really listen to that pump again, the car has 230t miles already, and if the pump is original i think it could very well be at the on of its life.
btw, Finland is ok, except when your car brakes down in the winter and you donīt have a warm garage. mastodontti 01-24-06, 05:30 AM Okay, i found out it was the pump not running, then went ahead and bought a new one, and when i was gonna jo and move the car for changing that pump, i turned power on, and there it was, hrrrr.., the damn thing resurrected. But today after 15 minutes of idle it died again, pump not making a sound. So what do you guys think, should a pump go out for good when it does or can it do this kind of working/not working. Or could the problem be in a broken oil pressure-sensor cutting off the fuel pump?
Maybe iīll go and replace that pump anyway. Pumps can go intermittent. My money is on the pump. mastodontti 01-24-06, 04:10 PM Ookay, tomorrow itīs on, changing the pump that is. Is there anything worth mentioning for that procedure, just unplug the hoses, and drop the tank etc? CadillacJack76 02-03-06, 11:12 PM Watch for rotted fuel lines!!!!!! Mine was rotted on the top of the tank where the lines go into the sending unit, yea, I had to buy a new sending unit, oh and only Cadillac has them, and yup!! it cost me 650 dollars. Oh and be really careful not to break the bolts for the straps, or break the tack weld that holds the stud from spinning, I did that once too, it took me an hour to get one strap off, I shoulda used torches!!!!!!

"Torches" and "gas tank" really shouldn't be used together in a sentence. :tisk:
