View Full Version : Rings

I mentioned in other posts about my warming up steam?/oil? discharge from the exhaust. After reading some bulletins, I'm wondering if I might have a ring problem. One bulletin was about a ring cleaning procedure. If the rings were loose when cold or covered with debris/carbon they would probably let some oil through and then when they warm up, seal the pistons off. Does this all make any sense? I love this car but like rfishing, it is causing me some anxiety. Should I just keep checking the oil and coolant regularly and put up with the warm up smoke? As I said before, I've never had an over heating problem. At 197-201 it runs like a champ for hours.

Dave,
Your paranoid, relax. Take her out and whoop her. Give her some WOT treaments to keep the rings free. Oil usage is normal. See the Technical Archive, top left this page if you haven't already. Check the oil & coolant regularly. Stop reading rfishings thread. Go pour yourself a drink.:alchi:

Ok. I'm sorry. It just makes me crazy seeing that smoke during warm up. I'll stop now.

Is it smoke or steam? Is it excessive? Your not using coolant and, you are not overheating. Normal Northstar oil usage, even 1 qt per 800-1000 miles will not show up as smoke from the tail pipe. I really think you have a bad case of internetitis. Waaay too many head gasket posts. Show me some symptoms, then we'll worry.

It lingers in the air alittle. I might have over filled it putting in a pint of stp. It may be alittle blue. As for symptoms, that's it. If I hit the gas when it's cold, I might get a misfire code and I had a manifold code yesterday P1520 or P1566. When I let it warm up slow, no codes. (Autozone has different code explainations than "our" list.)

Well, I'd just keep an eye on the coolant level. Oil usage is to be expected. If it is oil instead of condensation, it will be present in warm weather as well as cold.
Misfire is not normal. How many miles on it? Plugs & wires original?

It has 107K, probably the original plugs and wires. I was putting off changing them til I'm sure the "rest" is okay. I'm leaning towards okay. Today I put some Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the gas. Somebody posted in the past that they had alittle smoke when an injector was stuck and when they used it, it worked wonders. I did lose about 10 oz. of coolant this week but it could still be burping. (fingers crossed)
