How Can I upload a pic for my avatar, or do I need to be a supporting member first?

Yes, only supporting membors & vendors can upload a custom avatar. Non-supporting members & vendors are limited to the avatars provided by the forum.

You don't have to be a vendor. After you have 50 posts you can add your own avatar and signature or if you want to do it faster become a supporting member. Send them $25 and you get added benifits. I've recovered that money many times with information that I've learned on this Forum. Check it out.

yeah robert, thats wrong. they changed it with the new software a few months back. once you had 50 posts before you could upload one, but not now...if that was the case i wouldn't have this go-go-wagon on my avatar...i'd have my beauty up there...

only way is to become a supporting member...

Same with sigs, you can't have a signature with a picture in it unless you're a supporting member.

Hmmm..I've been around forever and didn't know the rules changed. But guys it's worth $25 to support this Forum. It's like NPR, some use it free without helping to support it. I know for a fact with out the support Sal's Forum would go under. I bet most of you guys have already got $25 worth of information from this Forum. Dig into your tight pants for a few bucks. You get other benifits too.:yup:
3x0 your avatar is disgusting!! Send Sal $25 ASAP!:D

You're kidding right? With the amount of ads on this site Sal could probably quit his job and go into early retirement. Never, ever, in the history of my time on the internet have I seen a place with so much advertisement. There are even ads between posts in this thread! Top, bottom, sides and now in the middle. I wonder how many people have had seizures from all the flashing ads. :bonkers: :histeric:

I agree, I am part of a sport bikes forum and the only ads they have is in the top corner. It is different if you want to make money from it. The owner must be trying to make X number of $$$ off this site.

There are too many ads.

Well if you believe Sal and I do you understand that keeping the Forum afloat has been a difficult task. Hacker attack this Forum everyday. He doesn't have a staff so he has to bring in the experts to make the patches and repairs. This Forum has a very large bandwidth and it cost him a lot of money each month to keep it in operation. a Couple of times Sals has come to the membership and litterally beg for contributions when money got tight.
Sure the ads help pay part of the operation. If everyone contributed we probably wouldn't have to put up with the damn ads.

Again it's a lot like National Public Radio in that donations are what keep it afloat. There will always be those like taking the free ride without realizing how much they get from it. That leaves the rest of us to pay your way.

Same way with the FAQ section. Reed busts his ass keeping that working and constantly updating it with new information. He doesn't get paid a dime for it. I use the FAQ often and that's why I also donated money to continue his work.

There would be less ads if everyone coughed up some $$

You know I don't even see the ads. I seldom visit them either.
The flashing ads I hate!! I wouldn't visit their stupid site for anything.

Nope. The only thing that changed at 50 posts is I was able to view member profiles. And I've been nothing but a model member since joining last month.

We have a lot of ads? Try these sites:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/index.php?
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zeromain

Look to the left and/or right.. When we have THAT many ads, we won't need user contributions at all.. While most people browse here for a few minutes every day, I'm here for hours backing up the databases, restoring from backups after hack attacks, upgrading scripts, installing modifications, tightening security every time somebody finds a hole, putting out fires between members, marketing for new members, answering hundreds of "I lost my password" emails, and, amongst other stuff, losing sleep nightly. Should I be earning a few dollars for all of this? No.. Huh? Well forget about Earning. I've already lost my part-time night job as a direct result of my mind being "here" and I'm not far from losing my full-time job...

Thanks, guys.. I know it's not easy to understand being on the "other side" but it's really quite a job keeping this place running.. I sometimes assume that other webmasters have several people working behind the scenes. Unfortunately for me, I'm the only person I know who's computer literate..

Thank you for the help! It really is greatly appreciated...

People, just because a site has advertising does not mean that it is generating revenue. Based on my experience, many of the ads on this site are focused on two things:
A) making a CTS insanely powerful
-or-
B) meeting women through various dating sites

What many fail to realize is that for each page delivery, for each forum read, you are costing the host bandwidth. The idea that bandwidth is cheap these days is a fallacy. Sure, bandwidth to deliver content is cheaper than it used to be, but it still isn't free. Every forum sig, photo, or post eats up Sal's bandwidth, on top of which is the management cost, which probably dwarfs the cost of hosting and bandwidth.

Even though Al Gore created the Internet, he didn't make it free or easy to manage, so back off the "Oh, I could support a family of seventeen based on the probable advertising revenue generated by site X" because as anyone who actually runs a web site knows, just because you have ads does not mean you have click-throughs and no click-throughs means no money, after paying for the discreet amount of bandwidth to host the ad.

This is from someone who rode the dot-com wave up, back down, and survived. I consulted for an organization who hoped to give away services with the expectation that their web advertising would subsidise their operations (disclaimer: no one asked the technical folk if this was a reasonable idea). Guess again. Web ads are not enough to feed a growing business, much less a family, 2001 should have taught everyone that. Support Sal, and kneel as his appearance because he is mighty and just by providing us this vital information, without which we would be lost children in the woods buying overpriced and ineffective exhausts for the 3.2 or trying to retrofit a car PC without the guidance of the mighty pioneers before us.

Shame on anyone who would think otherwise!
