View Full Version : Sun Visor Decal Removal?

I sat in the back of our CTS for the first time the other day and what really caught my attention are the ugly warning decals on the sun visors. Has anyone found a way to remove them without damaging the visor or do they require a visit to an upholstery shop? Man, are they ugly.

P.S. I am not a large person, but three adults in the rear seat of a CTS? Uh, I don't think so.

I had mine covered. Had a shop create a Cadillac decal to fit over the warning.

Any chance you have a picture of the decal you can share?

I'm with onephatguy. These appear to be a very heavy silkscreen and could not be easily removed (you can thank the lawyers for this one), so your best option is to cover them.

It can be removed. I saw the results at the Cadillac Ohio Meet. The guy was from the V Forum. It is silk screened but it can be removed. Do some searches.

My plan has alway been to recover it with the headliner material. an upholstery shop shouldn't charge much. Our Cherolet Dealer offers upholstery work. Just haven't found the time to do anything

On my very early '03, they're simply stickers. I peeled mine off, shortly after getting the car.

I have read that heating it with a hair dryer will allow you to peel it off, then some goo be gone will clean it up.

BUT BE CAREFUL, I haven't TRIED THIS, please BE CAREFUL!

Took a while but I found it in the V Forum like I said. It does work.

Here is the proper technique:

IMPORTANT: The original Goof Off - the one in the metal can, is the only product that I know of that will peel this warning label without damaging the vinyl in any way. Be sure you are using the original "Goof Off", and not "Goof Off 2", "Goo Gone", or any other sticker/label remover.

If you can, remove your visors for the entire operation.

The warning label is applied in layers, so any part of the warning label that is yellow, red, or black is significantly harder to remove than the white part. Soak part of a rag in the Goof Off, and apply the product liberally to about 1/4 of the warning label surface and rub it in. As soon as the product dries, put some fresh Goof Off on the same spot and you will see the warning label start to bubble. At this point you should be able to start to rub off the label.

Once the entire rubbery surface of the warning label is removed, soak a cotton rag in goof off and let the rag sit on the dark rectangle for a minute or two. Rub the area with the rag and then wipe it dry with a dry rag. Repeat until the residue is gone. Your visor will crinkle and the vinyl will seem very loose. At this point it looks like the visor is ruined but it is not. Once the label residue is completely removed, wash the vinyl with soap and water to remove any traces of solvent. Sit the visor in the hot sun for 10-15 minutes and the vinyl will tighten up like new. Treat with vinyl conditioner and reinstall visors. Viola - no more warning label and the vinyl is as good as new.

Since it is night time right now, I had to substitute the heat of a hair dryer for the heat of the sun. Once my car sits in sun in the office parking lot tomorrow, the label and the loose vinyl will be a distant memory.

Thanks Robert for finding and listing this solution. I'll give it try when I find the time as the decals have gotta go.:2thumbs:

I'd like to remove mine to do this but I'm not sure of the electrical plugs for the visor are. I think they are near by in the headliner. Anybody know?

I also found this while surfing as I was concerned with smelling Goof Off:

Remove Your Visor Decals Attached to every new car are decals warning passengers about airbags. Most likely, if you picked up your MINI new, you’ve removed the big sticker on the dash that warned of the hazards of children in the front seat by now… if you picked up your MINI used, most likely they’re long gone. But why not remove the warnings printed on the face of your sun visors? They’re rather unsightly, and the whole deal is spelled out at length in the owner’s manual. But how can you get them off? At first glance, those decals may seem stuck on there, but rest assured, there’s a way to get ‘em off:

What You’ll Need:

• Denatured Alcohol (not rubbing
• alcohol)
• Rag or sponge
• Gloves (optional)
• Phillips-head screwdriver (optional)

How-To:

First. make sure to do this procedure with the car windows down, and in a well ventilated area, as the fumes can be hazardous. Before starting, test your visor material with the alcohol for color fastness… there should be no problem, but just check to be sure (I’ve only ever done this on Ses with light headliners). You can remove the visors from the headliner with the screwdriver (2 Phillips screws), or simply leave them in place. Saturate a sponge or rag with the alcohol, wring out excess, then rub all over the decal surface. Let stand for about 5-10 minutes. Resaturate the sponge or rag, wring, and briskly rub from the center label out, turning the rag/sponge often. The label will begin to rub off in large eraser-like booger things. Keep going until it’s all gone. Once you’re done, a slight “ghost” may remain where the label was, but you won’t see it unless you’re up close and know where to look. Wipe the area with soapy water to remove any residue. Remount the visor if you removed them from the headliner. All done! A nice little modification that really helps to clean up your interior.

I think theres some guys up in MI talking about doing a spring meet. They may even go so far as to invite us lowly Indiana and Ohio residents. If this ends up happening we'll let you get away with waiting until October, Bob!

If you remove your visor and clean them after the procedure there will be no odors to worry about. The alcohol doesn't work on the silk screened Caddy label.
