YOOOOOO

I always get on here during E.A.S.T. (Environmental And Spacial Technologies). What a joke of a class. It's my second year. THe first year we did what we were supposed to...desgined things in Sketchup, etc. Now we got a teacher change and it's a total joke.

As long as I get my credits... :)

Kind of reminds me of where a friend of mine used to live. The "CCC" or Country Club Colony.

Windows and DOS Concepts! AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII !!!!

I used to teach that stuff...

Here's some junk for us old pharts to think about:

Files=50
Device=ANSI.SYS
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS

@echo off
Prompt $p$g
CLS
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\PROGRAMS

UGH..Windows users who never had to wrestle with DOS crap don't know how good they have it...I remember when Windows ran ON TOP of DOS - the early versions from Windows 1.0, Windows/386, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 3.0 (buggy as all hell), Windows 3.1, etc etc...

But I feel for you - nothing can be more terminal than sitting through a computer class after you've already worked all day. I taught night college for 17 years...used to throw the erasers at sleepyheads.. lol

Yikes! Not that stuff again! Batch programming got my arse in biig trouble in Highschool. When Hiding Drive letter C: in "My Computer" and blocking the command prompt using PolEdit on a W2k network is your idea of security.... SUBST fixed that real nice.

ahh, yes..good old SUBST... :)
The joys of working with a character-mode keyboard and command-oriented OS..there ARE some good things to be said about it..but not many...
1) DOS never crashed..well, almost never.
2) You could load it from a Floppy disk
A single-tasking, single-user OS with no hardware protection built in was at the mercy of programs that wrote to hardware directly, such as games and some apps - but for the most part, DOS was pretty damn simple.
There's an (possibly apocryphal) story about how the developer of DOS, Tim Patterson used Gary Kildall's CP/M as his basis for his "QDOS" . When IBM approached Bill Gates for suggestions on an OS to use for their new PC, he suggested Kildall's CPM. Kildall was out hang gliding when IBM came to call, and he refused to sign an NDA, so IBM went back to Gates for further suggestions. (At this time, MS was solely an applications and language vendor. They had no OS product). Gates basically ran across the street to Patterson's house, bought QDOS from Patterson for $50K without telling him that IBM wanted to license it for their PCs. Gates then licensed to IBM, and the rest is history. Gates made 8 billion dollars, Patterson made 50 thousand...
Gates also forced hardware vendors to license early versions of Windows by telling them they couldn't take DOS unless they took Windows. That's why, in the late 80s and early 90s, you couldn't get a computer without DOS and Windows BOTH installed on it. When Windows 3.1 became a fairly popular application (primarily because Hardware capabilities finally caught up with the software's need for horsepower), he pulled out of the deal with IBM to develop OS/2, effectively killing it, and IBM's PC market. MS took the kernel code and turned it in to NT, and eventually Windows/2000 and XP.

At Lowe's we have two OS's we use. Genesis is a DOS and a mozilla browser that is restricted to our own sites. It's a pain using them because we have to get them to interact. Sometime I have to submit data three times before it comes up on the other OS. Back in the early '90's I used DOS alot with all of that shell command crap. I like XP and look forward to the new windows supposedly coming out soon, though I heard it might be more office or business related.

Ahhhh...Windoze 3.1 Workgroup!!! How about that for some GUI Kev?

I have that one on my Packard Bell...:yup: I'm probably one of a select few that still holds onto a P-Bell :D

I also have a nice old dual-processor server machine from ~1991! It has two SCSI hdd's and 64 MB of RAM. But there is no video on that machine. You see, I made the mistake of removing the video card from the machine and turning the power on...What a brainstorm that was I tell you. Ever since then, I haven't been able to get any video feed on that thing and have since put it to other uses: it makes a good stand for my old Nintendo and SNES consoles. It had/has Windoze 95 on it...

I'm guessing the video was a PCI card? What happened? did the slot fry or something? I've not heard of that being a problem, usually you should get an error beep code for no video. I assume you've tried moving the card to other slots.

I still see businesses running ANSI interfaces for sales and inventory. GUI hasn't completely taken over! A lot of touch typists despise the point-and-click interface! It slows them down.

No, I can't rememeber the exact name, but it's an older version of an ISA slot :eek: :bonkers: :suspense: (Maybe it's still an ISA?)

As for moving around to other slots, I tried that to no avail. I'm thinking that the card is bad, but if anyone can find something that old that is plug+play, Im all ears.

Extremely true. Many third-party or "vertical" market programs that got their start in the early to mid 80s still run a character mode interface, and yes, it is much faster and more efficient to use, IF YOU KNOW IT WELL. Tax, accounting, professional office managment, specialized scientific programs etc for example are still around. I have clients with programs they pay thousands of dollars a year for that run in a DOS box under Windows. Some are good, some are a real pain in the patootie to support.
A qualified and well trained user, running a character mode program, can still run rings around a GUI in many cases. I've seen office secretaries who can barely learn to cut and paste in Word fly through their "old" programs a million miles a minute and not make a single mistake. It all has to do with familiarity, quality of the interface, and how well the DOS program is crafted with regards to the business process at hand.
Hell, anyone who complains about Windows should try MVS and JCL..lol
