Hey guys, another member showed me this website and lists all the recalls and TSBs for various cars. My quesiton is, since it was a TSB, are these covered even after warranty is up or what? And since its a TSB, does that mean they have a fix or is it just to notify the dealership? Im finding a lot of TSBs that apply to me that my dealer never bothered to look up.

hey robert, I'm sorry I didnt even realize I forgot to post the site!

http://www.mycarstats.com

Sign up is free and it takes about 2 seconds to do. It lists all the TSBs for the CTS in different categories. I know the cadillacfaq site has TSBs also, but its not set up in the most organized manner as far as overall area of the car affected (steering, brakes, engine, etc) and according to the year of the car.

I found a lot of TSBs that apply to me, I am copying and pasting them in MS Word, and hopefully take it to the dealer.

This is a huge one that I notice on my car:

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN: NHTSA Bulletin Number: 0308110004
MFG Bulletin Date: 20030801
Component: STRUCTURE:BODY
Details: VIBRATION/BUZZ/RATTLE IN REAR WINDOW SHELF TRIM PANEL AREA WHEN RADIO VOLUME/BASS SET HIGH. *TT
Date added to datbase: 20031205

I dont even listen to much rap, even with Jazz or light rock, sometimes I get real nasty vibration in my rear deck everytime the bass hits, its very annoying. I had this problem on my 2000 DTS, but the dealer could never fix it and said ''thats how it is'' so I never bothered to fix it on the CTS, until I found this TSB.

I have that same window shelf trim nosie problem. What good is a TSB about it though??

I have that same window self trim nosie problem. What good is a TSB about it though??
Thats what I was wondering. Does a TSB about a certain problem = a potential fix??

A technical service bulletin falls far short of a recall. It's like a primer for the technician who's trouble shooting your car.

that bulletin only applies to the 2003 CTS...

The faq TSB section (the data I pull) is from 2004 and on... it is time consuming so I have not gone back to 2003..

I am working on organizing it better too. It does take some time though... At least it is on a database backend now so I hav emore flexibility, but I am not the best SQL programmer...

I "HAD" the same problem with the rear deck vibrating and thought it would be that way for ever. The solution was a simple one, go get some good ole dynamat, cut out holes for the lights, and stick it up there. The bass will sound tremendously better, and that annoying vibratation, will be GONE! I thought it was the sub just being overpowered, and thought I would check for the mere $30 price of dynamat, and it fixed it and made it sound a hell of a lot better!! Even with my new 12" sub back there, I get NO rattle anymore!!

Reed, don't think I was trying to dog on your site. Its helped me a lot for many issues concerning my car and is a great resource. I just meant it was a bit time consuming for me to go through and read up on everything in the TSB section. :)

what do you mean cut out holes for the lights?? What lights are you referring to?? And yea, I was thinking Dynamat...it just seems that whole area they didnt pad properly/design. Sounds like the whole metal subframe holding the subwoofer in is just shaking. Strange, as Ive seen cars with subwoofers on the rear deck and they dont vibrate like that. Whenever I took my DTS for service I mentioned the problem, they would just replace my subwoofer each time, so I just gave up.

Have your dealership lookup--in front of you, on their computer in the Service Department--exactly what TSB's and recalls have been done. They can print this out for you and they can show you on their computer monitor.

There's a trunk light mounted on the rear deck. I think that's what FlyFlip was referring to. Dynamat the inside of the rear deck helps a lot.

If your CTS doesn't have the braces installed (03 and maybe early 04), get them put in! The braces also reduce the vibration greatly but you will still have vibrations.

The left over vibrations are caused by the modules, the trunk light, and cables that are attached to the subwoofer's mounting plate. I took the rear deck off to expose the sub and mounting place. After arming myself with 3M double sided mounting tape. I used my hand to vibrate the rear deck to pinpoint which compenents were causing the rattling sounds and used the tape to secure and pad them against the subwoofer mounting plate. Now there are no rattles at all! BTW, I have a 10" Infinity Component sub with a "small" 350W Alpine mono amp in my rear deck.

I work for a manufacturer and below is how our "bulletins" work. TSBs are the equivelant for autos so I would think they work similarly (but maybe not exactly the same).

The bulletin covers only a limited range of serial numbers that are known to be affected. This bulletin should include the list of affected serial numbers or a date range. The ability to track components and process changes down to a date range or serial number is common in manufacturing today (i.e. ISO 900X). Concrurrent with the release of the bulletin, the factory will implement a fix (corrective action) that will prevent the issue from occurring on models manufactured after a certain date / serial number (VIN for an auto). Accordingly, a TSB may or may not apply to your vehicle depending upon when it was manufactured. This is also an example of why many say it's better to buy a later or the latest year of a model run - because all of these little fixes have been implemented.

Hope this helps.

2004 is correct.
Just because a TSB is listed for your "year" doesn't mean it actually applies to your car.

Yes there is a TSB on '03 CTS to install some braces in the rear shelf area, I did one a couple weeks ago and it did fix the concern. I can see some aftermarket solutions working on this problem.

TSBs are for informational purposes and in no way is the manufacturer required to perform the repairs outlined in a TSB once your car is out of manufacturer's warranty. It's not an admission of guilt, it's a "diagnostic aid" to help us locate the problem more quickly.
Recalls are covered for the life of the vehicle because they are mandatory repairs for safety reasons.

Vibration/Buzz/Rattle in Rear Window Shelf Trim Panel Area When Radio Volume/Bass Set High (Install Rear Window Panel Braces) #03-08-110-004 - (Aug 6, 2003)
Vibration/Buzz/Rattle in Rear Window Shelf Trim Panel Area When Radio Volume/Bass Set High (Install Rear Window Panel Braces)
2003 Cadillac CTS

Condition
Some customers may comment on a vibration/buzz/rattle in the rear window shelf trim panel area whenever the radio volume or bass setting is on high.

Cause
This condition may be due to the energy output from the speaker causing the nearby panel components to vibrate/rattle whenever the radio volume or bass setting is on high.

Correction

Install a LH (1) and a RH (2) rear window panel brace assembly.

Repair Procedure
Remove the rear window shelf trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement-Rear Window Shelf in the Interior Trim sub-section of the Service Manual or SI Document ID #730411.
Remove the RH seat belt retractor.

Remove the rear speaker's two front retaining nuts (4).
Loosen the rear speaker's two rear retaining nuts (3).
Lift and support the forward edge of the rear speaker.
Ensure the braces are free of grease.

Important
Once the brace has been positioned, do NOT pull away from the panel. If repositioning is necessary, slide the brace against the shelf panel.

Apply GM® Metal Patch Panel Adhesive Fast Set, P/N 12378566 (in Canada, use P/N 88901674) , to the LH Rear Window Panel Brace, P/N 25760577, along the areas indicated in the illustration.
