Had sudden loss of heat with the drivers seat at 149,000 mi, had the every 10 sec clicking from under the seat at the same time. Seat cover was worn, so figured the seat wire grid had a break- ordered and got a new cover- no heat! Then replaced the module- fixed. Noticed many/ most of the posts in the archives say it was the seat wires, not the module- so I thought I'd post my results. New module, well, modulates better- now has a distinct low setting that is comfortable, not too hot like previous. Got a new seat foam that fixed the previous sag, too. Not too hard to pull it all apart and replace, no need to go to an upholstery shop- saved probably $100 labor.

did you replace the actual seat..the upholstered part ? I am kinda new..
I know my side doesn't work...

but I am more curoius about which part of the cover, and availability of
new panels, etc..because I have a very slight stain I would like to get rid of..Thanks.

I just had mine replaced under warranty. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch but I did talk to the mechanic and he told me there are only two bolts that release the lower seat cushion. Then it is just a matter of unplugging the electrical connections. I believe after that you have to carefully slit the foam to remove the heating element and insert the new one. Someone just did this and posted the proceedure with pics. Do a search for it. If you locate it. I'll post it in the Tech Tips section if it is not already there.

Nice post.

A buddy of mine with an '98 STS and a bad seat warmer finds that "banging" on the module will cause it work... When mine goes I'll remember, module first... coils second...

Thanks for sharing.

so "in theory" if one were to add heated seats they only need the cushion, wiring and switches?

All you need are the heating elements and module(s). A wiring schematic woudl help, too.

There was someone on here who took the elements and module from an old seville (I think) and installed them into his bonneville.

Cool! I currently don't have the switch on the center console by the shifter so i assume i'd need those two (with the new center console top 'wood' piece.

Junk yard scavanger hunt. :D

Just pull everything you need. It would be a good idea to test the elements before you steel them. There is a procedure somewhere on this sight. You measure the resistance I beleive

On a 98-04 SLS or STS to be real trick youd want to do the rears too, since factory heated seats on the STS and SLS were on all four corners. :coolgleam:

Yes- replaced the seat cover with integral element, mainly because it was creased and color worn at 149,000 mi. No bolts holding mine on, just locking grooves around the perimeter of the seat cover.

Works perfect now. Easy to get to- remove seat cover and cushion, cut off/ punch out two aluminum rivets, attaches to bottom of seat frame

in the next post you said something about rivets..that holds the seat cover..
but more important..how did it match ??

Two rivets hold the module onto the seat frame- easy to remove them.

Perimeter folded plastic "clips" hold the cover on- just pry them off.

Seat cover color match- looks perfect if the rest of the seat were also as new. The seat back is of course worn and is not "as new". Looks like the seat cover is getting some dirt and creases after a few days, and I have cleaned the back several times- so the overall match is quite good at this point. The previous seat bottom cover got a lot more wear than seat back, so it really wasn't matching well to start with- was darker and more creased. Looks and works much better than previous now.

I've tried a spray-on leather restore kit on my other STS- it was a major job to prep the leather, mask off, and still have to clean up overspray. The color was , again, as-new, with the rest of the seat a "worn" less bright and glossy tint. Replaceing the cover was a much better option for me this time

So if you cut off the rivets what did you use to attach the new module ?

Went back with hardware-store aluminum rivets- simple

It's been a while. I think I yahoo'd or googled "leather repair" and picked one.

I am looking on gmpartsdirect.com and can't find the module for the driver-side seat heater. Do you know what the part number is or have a better way to find it?

Anyone have any pics showing where the bolts are to remove the main seat cushion? I need to replace my passenger side module.

I had similar problems, Cadillac ended up replacing the bottom element for the second time. I got kinda frustrating. All the upholstery shops I talked to wanted to pull the seat out of the car. No Way. I did replace the heated seat module first. I still have the old one if anyone is interested.

I'm interested in playing ... errr ... experimenting with a defective control module if that is what you have. Will reimburse mailing cost.
