View Full Version : What additives actually work

I am sure this has been discussed many many times, and I know there are believers and non-believers. But what additives do you find helpful to use with the N* engine?
I have a 98 Eldo, 100K miles.
I have used:
STP- fuel injector cleaner
STP- Octane Booster
and some other STP product here or there.

I don't perticularly have any loyalty to STP, I just roll with them. But I don't use them all the time (every new full tank of gas, or every oil change, etc...)

There are many opinions on if these help even if used regularly. But with a vehicle at 100K, do these do anything for the future or if not used from day one are they just throwing away an extra $5-$8 each time.

***note I do do regular maintanence on my Eldo.

Just let me know your thoughts on the MANY MANY additives out there. Are they for real, or just no different than how we humans have be conditioned that $3 for a bottle of water is a good necessary thing. hehe

If you go to a website called bobistheoilguy.com you will learn more about additives than you're ever likely to need to know - and just as many opinions on what works and what doesn't.

IMHO (1997 SDV, 92K), I use LUCAS Synthetic Oil stabilizer in the engine and also use LUCAS UCL (upper cylinder lubricant) with every fill-up. I've got MOBIL 1 synthetic 10W30 in the crankcase, MOBIL 1 synthetic auto trans fluid for there. Use K&N Air filter, oil filter. Also NGK Iridium spark plugs.

Runs smoother than whale-shit and quieter than anything dead, as they say (whoever "they" are,,,,)

Marvel Mystery Oil. It's as old as wood spoke wheels. Engineers at Buick, came up with this suppliment back in 1923, for the the Marvel Carburator, used on Buick Engines of the era, hence the name.

I use it in everthing that I have using an internal combustion engine. It lubricates the valves and cleans up the piston ring packs, from vanish and carbon deposits, and keeps them clean. It's cheap. I buy it at Walmart, $10. a gallon. Use it in the fuel as normal routine.:spin:

What about "motor Flush? Who has actually ever used it?

I tend to agree with Frost.

I use the Lucas Upper Cylinder lube w/fuel injector cleaners. Makes a HUGE difference in my Harley. Definitely a noticeable difference in my Tahoe and the Eldorado.

I also use Mobil One every 3000. 5/30 in winter, 10/30 in summer. The Eldorado I hardly drive in the winter, once a month maybe, so that is 10/30 all the time.

The Lucas is a good product though. I am a believer. Never tried the oil additive.

Also, maybe every oil change or so, I pour a couple bottles of Iso-Heat in my truck. Takes out water. My truck gets a ton of miles, for work.

Just my seat-of-the-pants observations....

I am of the belief that most addatives are snake oil. Marvel mytery oil was a great product for its time, when oils where much inferior to todays oils. Todays oils just don't varnish up the engines like they did in the 20's -60's. Its just not needed today. Ditto for motor flush.

Likewise with injector cleaners. Our former guru always said never to use that stuff. It is very harsh and can destroy the windings on the fuel pump and injectors. Many a fuel pump has been known to fail after usage.

I gave up on addatives years ago and never had a problem that I could blame on lack of use. The factory recommends not using any addative and that is good enough for me. Just my $0.02.

Make that $0.04:thumbsup:

I agree. I personally believe there are good products that you can just "pour in" to help things out, like GM TEC, isopropyl alcohol, etc... Oh and that's all a good dry gas is...isopropyl...just buy that and add 10 oz. per tank and that'll nix water.

But anyway, I would avoid putting anything in the oils...oil, tranny fluid... There are some coolant conditioners that are ok, so I've heard...Bar's stop leak...be careful with coolant stop leaks though, and DON'T buy Prestone's...which just induced me into flushing my system *mumbles obscenities...*. Oil additives that have any credence to them are usually just chemicals that are already in modern oils, as Ranger implied. Oil is like a cake recipe... Eggs might be good, but adding more than you're supposed to ruins the chemistry. That's a little extreme, but the point is sound. Adding ATF or Seafoam to the oil are good methods of cleaning things out, but not something that's good to leave in there for long periods. If you're going to do that, do it a few days, or maybe a week before you change the oil only.

As for said oil, I tend to go with Mobil 1 Synthetic. Search for that topic if you'd like more info on why, it's been slaughtered lol. (Reasons for and against of course)

BG44k for injectors -- $20, basically a very highly concentrated version of Chevron Techron. It DOES work. Use 2-3 times a year.

MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) for the motor helps with HLA and lifter ticking.

Happy motoring. :)

Additives?

Injector cleaner, drygas (if sold bad gasoline with water), no oil additives ever.

A word on Lucas's oil-bs. Have you noticed how their solution to every product is to thicken it? Their fuel treatment is thick, their trans treatment, their PS treatment, and the oil treatment. The oil stuff is just heavy assembly oil. Just switch to 20w50 and you will accomplish the same thing without the steep lucas viscosity curve. I for one don't want to run my car for 15 minutes before I leave.

ATF for ticking lifters. That is all.

What, the type F for 500 miles thing?
