View Full Version : My car got HIT AND RUN!!

I woke up this morning, went down to my 'secured' gated underground parking to discover my car has been dragged out of its space with the front end messed up.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d25/downandloaded/ZoomOUt.jpg

Its obvoius that the huge F150 that parks next to me clipped it as he drove out and dragged it out. But no note or nothing.....except a FORD hubcap for a six-lug truck:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d25/downandloaded/DCP03690.jpg

So after I catch my breath I waled around to a lower level garage and found the truck:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d25/downandloaded/DCP03698.jpg

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d25/downandloaded/DCP03701.jpg

With a missing hubcab:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d25/downandloaded/DCP03700.jpg

So the cops came and did the whole CSI treatment and towed the suspect ruck to impound.

I only have liability, the car runs but not sure if I should drive it.
I need advice....should I rent a car and keep reciepts and HOPE they bust him and his insurance pays......what am I gonna do?

Its sucks big time because I am in the middle of a move to LA and I needed to be up there tomorrow with a Caddy full of stuff....

I have to buy a car for my wife in a month but I guess I can just go ahead and find something now and start using it.....this realy sucks.

That REALLY sucks bigtime, and to top if off, your insurance wont cover it!
Atleast you found out who did it! :)
This sucks now, but in the end it will all work out fine!

Wow! People can really be *******s. I think you have enough evidince there that this should turn out ok. I mean how much more could the cops need. The guy was missing the hubcap that was sitiing next to your car. This is freaken crazy. :helpless:

01-09-06, 06:56 PM
Oh no!!!!

At least you found the guy who did it and at least the cops turned up.
They wouldn't in the UK.

I'd say stick a headlamp in it, do what you can with the bumper (don't want it coming off at speed) and get the alignment checked and have a mechanic take a quick look underneath.

Better safe than sorry.

Yeah.....the annoying thing is its low on oil.
(It has been), but now the hood is jammed and I cannot get it open to add oil....can you believe my luck??

I~LUV~Caddys8792
01-09-06, 07:55 PM
Hey well my friends 1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD goes through 5 quarts of oil a day!!!! and he just burned up his fuel pump, and his air intake tube was falling off constantly...and his ECU never works, and, theres other stuff too, but he keeps throwing money into it and driving it.. Secretely, I kinda hope that someone were to hit him when hes not in it, so they could total it out and give him the money. It's his daily driver and he cant drive it. So if this keeps up, he'll miss so much school, he'll flunk out and his work will fire him!

After seeing this, I have made a vow to never buy a DSM!

Not to detract from your post, I'm telling this in the hope that you will fell better :)

powerglide
01-09-06, 07:59 PM
Well thanx...i still feel pretty crappy, but better :)

I guess I won't be buying a mitsubishi for my wife then.

I was gonna spend about 5g's on a car for her to put around in....sometime in February. But I guess I could just go buy one now and use it myself till she needs it or this gets settled.

Being the kinda guy I am, now I am focusing on the prospect of buying another car (for my wife) to lighten my mood.

well...she wants:
-something small
-four doors
-automatic

(its her first car being a NYcity girl....)

We're in the Accord/Camry/Civic category here.....:hide:
She wants a SAAB and its in the price range, but its reliabilty record is spotty....and repairs not cheap.

There's the VW Golf, Nissan mid/sml cars etc to consider too.....we just wanted to spend more time looking for her car...dont wanna be rushed like this

sorry if I'm rushing you!
buying a car is not a process you want to rush at all.
Take your time, look around, look at everything you want as many times as you want

I almost bought a 1992 Honda Accord a couple of months ago, just as cheap, reliable transportation for college :)
Great cars I hear, just the total opposite of my Caddy.

exaclty......this is how it went down

I went to the gate to pick up the moving company rep to let him so I can get a quote. And we're walkin and chatting when I notice a car in the middle of the driveway that looks kinda like mine......the moving guy is talkin but I am not listeneing anymore as I fast walk and notice it IS my car thats all fked up and layin in the driveway......its all been a blur, but when I found that truck I almost beat the crap out of it with my club....but didn;t want to complicate the issue and held back.

Again with my inner red neck not being allowed to do his thing.....I'm gonna be dreamin tonight!

What happened to the pinhead with the F150? Did he claim he went to get help?

I~LUV~Caddys8792
01-09-06, 08:27 PM
Yeah wow the exact same thing happened with my dad back in may

He was driving to the grocery store, and someone swerved to miss someone coming out of the grocery store parking lot, and they hit my dad head on in his '91 Mazda 626, totalling the car (duh!) so we were down to 2 cars for 2 months (mine and my mom's Lumina) and we had ordered a brand new Toyota Highlander that was due in the beginning of June, but that didnt come in until mid June. So we only had the Lumina and my deVille (which they never drive) for atleast 2 weeks so my dad had to decide whether to rent a car, and possibly have insurance pay or to go out and buy a cheap daily driver. (He would have gotten the rental right away, but my 16 year old brother was to get the Lumina when the Highlander came in, and my dad was to keep the 626, so dad got the Lumina after the highlander came in, so my brother got screwed out of that one.) So anyways, they got a Vibe as a rental car for a month, nice little car, got 28mpg in city(!) until the highlander came in in mid June.

Then about 2 weeks later, my brother backed into my passengers' side mirror with the highlander, and took a bit off paint off my car, and denting in the Highlander's rear quarter panel. Then about 3 weeks after that, the highlander got rear ended by a Legacy going about 8mph, nothing bad really, it just needed a new bumper cover and some other plastic panels.

So yeah it's been a tough year carwise for our family!

(sorry, I dont mean to steal this thread!)

Are there any security cameras in your garage?

powerglide
01-09-06, 08:46 PM
Well, they don't have the driver yet all we have is his truck.

No cameras down there...it blows.

Hopefully he'll go down and see his tuck is gone, report it stolen and make his way down to the cops where he will be forced to explain himself and pay towing and impound costs.

According to the cops, the communication stream is now between me and my insurance company and then from my insurance company to the cops....

Minimize the claim???!!! Sounds like its obvious whos at fault. If I were you, I'd go down to the "exotic car rental" lot and pick out a nice toy to drive until this bastard decides to show up. Screw him and his insurance, squeeze every dime out of them that you can!

You mentioned it was a "secured parking garage". Is this associated with an apartment building or something? Is there any way you could use a parking tag number to help find out this guy's identity. If all else fails, demand the offenders truck as compensation for repairs.

Well. I now know it IS the big Russian dude, his name is Ilya Chreknyvosnkobitch or something. And I know he's living aboveing me in C-412. I did some sleuthing around and spoke to a neighbor who happens to be some military/govt special ops/intelligence or something, and he says this dude is dangerous and he thinks he;s either a mobster or ex-KGB or something. He also told me this ******* was partying really loud till 2-3 AM today.

So he must have been drunk.

What an *******, looks like he came home drunk. I am Ukrainian and believe me, russians/ukrainians (same thing) drink vodka on a regular normal basis. Your car atleast isn't damaged internally. Make sure this shit head ******* doesn't try to change the story, my ppl will do that. I hope you didn't touch that center cap, or anything else on your car, you don't want to put any finger prints on (just makin sure). Don't make this a bigger problem than it is, you have much bigger things to worry about. Hope all goes well for you!! Good Luck!! Make sure the cops have a REAL nice talk with him.

I went ahead and arranged for a rental......I hope I get reimbursed.
Turns out a deville costs 40$ a day to rent, same price as a SUV
So I decided to go with the SUV since I am in the middle of the move and need the space/wanna tru something different.

The insurance comany insisted I should get a comparable car.
So a deville for a deville should be as comparable as they get.....and since the SUV is the same price as the deville I think I should be covered.....I'm not so sure though.

You guys think I will be getting screwed for this? SHould I be renting the cheapest possible thing I can get? Like a compact for 20 bucks or something?

BTW the full size is 33$ a week....no big difference.

Stoneage_Caddy
01-10-06, 09:52 PM
you should be ok on the rental ...

Didnt realize they impounded his truck ....thats a good first step ....if it comes back set it on fire ...if someones asks about it just say "didnt those fords have a fire hazzard from the cruise controll?" ....

Im still disturbed this happend to you dude , any word on the estimate to fix yet ? the way the resale on these work i imagine it will be a total

God I hope not.....I haven't driven it all, its just sitting there for now.
Looking at the damage I think the bumper/grill and sourrounding pieces are the only thing that need to be replaced....hopefully around 3-4 grand.

The book value (dealer trade in) is about 4 grand or so.....its gonna be a close call. If I get the money I will goto the junk yard and cobble it back together somehow.

I just spoke to a neighbor that knows them.
Apprently the wife is pregnant and went home to Russia 2 weeks ago to give birth. And the guy was gonna go after the child was born.

Since his other neighbor says he was up till early morning partying the day of the accident I am wondering if he was celebrating the birth, got trashed, hit and run, then hopped a flight and dissapeared hoping it would blow over by the time he got back.

OR, it was someone else partying and crashing his truck.....

either way this is gonna take some freakin time.....good lord.

as far as value , it goes by what it would cost you to replace the car , so dont use trade in but low retail in NADA ....NADA is what the banks use ...kelly is what the dealers use as a wepaon against you

powerglide
01-10-06, 11:14 PM
retail is about 10G's and private party sale is like 7800.....so even a low ball should be 6500-7500 and I don't think it should cost that much to fix...unless theres some serious damage I dont see....maybe airbag related.

BREAK IN THE CASE!

So I swung by the perps apt just now on the way back from the pool, and lo and behold someone answered the door!

It his room mate, and he's acting like a stand-up guy.
But the story is shady.....actually exactly what the cops said will happen.

He claims, someone took the keys and did the hit and run and they just noticed today. (the cop told me, the perp usually dissapears for a couple days, consults a lawyer who advises them to say they dont know who was driving.) This then allows him to get his truck out of impound and the case becomes a civil case not a criminal case, and they cops stop working on it. Then its up to me to sue him, and prove that its his fault, then somehow get paid......I certainly hope it doesnt resort to this.

The actual owners is supposed to call me tomorrow to set things right......got my fingers crossed.

Unfortunatley I have to be in LA for business for a week....so I rented a vehichle already.....what a hassle.

UPDATE:

Owner of the car was supposed to call me today but did not (surprise)
SO I knocked on his door again, and lo and behold he's there....but very cheeky with info.
First of al he didn't even tell me he was the guy I was looking for, I had to ask a bunch of times.
Then he wouldnt tell me his insurance info, he kept insisting he wasn't driving it.

I used my salesman technique to get him to spill his beans about what company he has insuarnce through!
Got it, then I got his full name correctly spelled, then his phone number.

I turned that right oved to my insurance company, and hopefully the ball wil begin to roll......

In the meantime I got a rental. I was surprsed to find that delivered me a Brand New Durango Black/Black leather, with a HEMI!
I 'accidentally' did a burn out in the rental company parking lot....this thing has crazy torque. Its really quick. I was impressed.
I like riding high up above the traffic, but the handling sucks.

In fact, taking a high speed turn, a small bump will cause the rear end to hop sideways, making it real dangerous on fast crowded freeways.
Plus its HUGE, hard to park. Surprising the space inside isn't that big. My caddy has more room up fron than this thing.

Cool ride though....I'm diggin it.

I~LUV~Caddys8792
01-11-06, 09:31 PM
Hows the Hemi compare to the Northstar?

powerglide
01-11-06, 09:35 PM
Compared to my northstar, this Hemi's got more low end torque.
Its almost twitchy, like you step into and unles you're careful it'll burn out.
I don't think I'd wanna drive a RWD version of this thing in the rain or snow without some kind of traction/stability control.

Higher up in the revs, its still pulling hard but I think the N* is more rev happy than this thing. My car seems to pick up second wind up at high rpm (kinda like a VTEC) and keeps on pulling, this thing is stil pulling but feels like driving a car without overdrive.....engine reving, noise increasing, but power output doesn't follow along.

Don't get me wrong, its fast. I was going 90 in a heartbeat.

That DeVille is perfectly driveable!

bungee cord the bumper up and replace the turn signal bulb with an amber bulb and tape it to the bumper so you have a turn signal and the car is driveable, if you are not driving at night, don't need a headlight, otherwise rig up the headlight in a similar way.

Gosh.. guess there are no rednecks in LA :)

That sucks big time though, its so obvious, yet it sounds like you are gonna get screwed.... ah man, hope it all works out.

I figured its time for an update.

Its been a long time, but the last repair on my beloved Deville was completed today. (alignment)

It is now finally back to its glorious self....well for the most part.
(Since I paid out of pocket to keep the cost down, I had to cut corners doing almost all my own repairs, use eBay parts, decide to live with hairline crack in grill and small dents on fender and hood)

I'm suing the perp to recover my out of pocket expenses and money to get the dents and grill fixed. The showdown is set for early April!

Should be a slam dunk case, but actually getting the money out of this scumbag is another story altogether.

My car should be going back together soon, I have everything I need to make it perfect except a damn front bumper cover (and a switchcover and ETC symbol.) I'm thinking of stealing a car and rear-ending an Eldorado in town just so there will be one in a junkyard.

Ah man, what a douche! What was he thinking anyway? I mean you pull out wrong, you clip somebody... and then you STOP when you realize you've hit something. That looks like he tied the front of your car to his frame and floored it to see how big a chunk would come off.

I wouldn't retaliate with a bat to the thing even if things don't go your way. Best not to let anyone have something on you, though I'll not mention the bologna on the pa--uhh anyway...:D

Hope you get him. I've seen far too many instances of the innocent person getting the shaft. If it comes down to court, I'd check into the guy that was supposedly driving... Ask who was driving...who did he give the keys to... If he says it was "stolen," it can be examined for tampering/hot wiring. Someone has to be accountable... Anyway, you probably have a handle on it. Best of luck.

I would punch that ****er right in the ****in throat! If he doesnt pay up punch him in the throat once a week until he does. Im sure the courts could garnish his wages also. If you cant fight- pay someone to punch him the throat.

I went to court on Tuesday and the a-hole didn't show. (surprise)
But I had all the paperwork and the professional serving company I hired to serve the court papers provided a written statement that he had been served, so the trial continued without him.
Judge weighed all the evidence, awarded me all the damages PLUS legal fees PLUS my time (@125$/hour). Apparently time is usually never included in cases like these but the judge said "the evidence of malfescence is overwheling, therefore I am awarding you for your time you spent dealing with this case"
Now comes the hard part......actually collecting the debt.

that sucks that had to happen to you man.

Well, since the cops showed up, you should have or get a claim# from them.

That claim # is what you have to give to your insurance company. It was clearly NOT your fault! Even though you have liability, YOUR insurance is not the person who has to pay for it. It has to be the Ford guys insurance company that has to pay for it!!

This exact problem happen to my buddy last year. My buddy only had liability, but the other guys insurance (guy who hit him), had to pay for it.

Anyways, the only downside is, "IF" that guy with the Ford has only liability insurance, then thats when you might have a problem. Hopefully he will have full coverage, so then his insurance company will pay for your damages.

BUT, if he ONLY has liability, and he doesnt want to fork out his own money to pay for your damages, then take his ass to court and sue him. I know this sounds like too much crap to deal with, but at least you get your car fixed AND get more money out of it.

You are smart and took pics that you posted here. These are the pics that if you do take him to court to sue him, show these pics to the judge. It clearly shows that his truck is the one that hit you, and he moved it to another level. What a dumbass.

There's A LOT more I can say about this situation, but I wont go too far.
He can even lie, and said that he didnt do it, and that somebody must've stole his truck, and did it, etc etc. Anyways, you get the idea.

Good luck and let us know the outcome of what happens.

What a scumball.
That guy would have been doomed.
Just like when some ****ball stole my trailer,
They came back the next night after some bait I left out..
I sat there, house dark, 10PM until 2AM real quiet like a hunting dog

Caught 'em, was shocked at there being five, scared me to death.. one of them was on his way over to me to do god knows what and I cocked my pistol.. three of them ran the other two sauntered off non chalant like idiots.

Unknown to them my pistol had jammed,
Thank the lord they didn't know.
If it'd not have jammed I'd held at least one of them for the officers.
I'm never going to own a saturday night special again. Ever.

I should have gone out with the shotgun
OR
Waited quietly for the police to catch 'em

I think the trash lived nearby too because the police dragged the area lookin for *****s on foot and found no one

Damned thieves and crooks
Had a hit and run on a car one time too..
A little Nissan I bought for $950 (Bought to sell)
still doubled my money on it though.

If the ******* had liability,
It will pay for your losses... that is what it is for.
"Liability only" coverage covers what you do to someone else
