Ok I have 125,000 miles on my deville has a slight headgasket leak. Cadillac dealer gave me a price of $3800 I think thats quite high. I have searched the forums and have seen prices of $1700 to $5000 to fix this. Whats the deal? Alot of people have this problem from what I see and I want to fix the car what can I expect to pay anyone other than Cadillac to do this repair? $3800 is way too much to put into a 1997 car.

Look at the head gasket thread in tech tips. You'll get an idea what's involved.
You could do it yourself if you want.
A major factor in pulling the engine is disconnecting the wiring. The 97 is easier than the 94. Make sure the block gets timeserted in case of thread damage. Do it even if the threads appear good.

Wont be doing it myself thats for sure.

This is a VERY labor intensive job. Forget all your pre-concieved ideas of the standard headgasket replacement. The engine has to be removed out the bottom; the Timesert installation is an 8 hour job alone.
and if you decide to buy a reman motor, let me know since i am searching for a new bad n* myself!!

I just had mine done at the dealer a few months ago, total cost was $3300.00 and that was at $110.00 an hour. After reading through the post on this subject I thought that was a very fair price.
