View Full Version : More "upgrades" to the '79..... Night Wolf 01-04-06, 12:36 AM I found a kickass junkyard today, well thanks to someone at my school telling me about it.... of the many, many cars and LOADS of Caddys, there is a '79 Fleetwood Brougham...kinda rough, but all there. I wanna go back tomorrow to get some more Fleetwood-only parts ;) :)
But today I just wanted to look around, so I got a few things I could by hand/with keys. A new dual cup holder for the '93 Coupe (since I kinda broke the origanal) and the light lens covers for the doors from that Fleetwood....
check it out... I like it so much more, little things like this kinda add more to the interior of the car: DopeStar 156 01-04-06, 01:22 AM *Gasp* Holy CRAP! They had crests and wreaths on those?!?!?! WTF?! Mine's got little silver squares!!!!

Just like I put a brand new 80's Brougham hood ornament on my car... really nice, with the wreath, the stock DeVille is just the big crest...ugly.
You have the squares because you have the wreath and crest above the arm rest but under the handle... I do agree, kinda ugly...
try to find a '77-'79 DeVille, not sure about '80+ or when they made the switch. The DeVille will have only the crest, like my first pic, the Fleetwoods are the ones with the wreaths as well. 90Brougham350 01-04-06, 02:21 AM Oh man, next time I'm at the yunk yard, I'm stealing a whole crap-load of those wreaths and going crazy! Already got 'em on my mirrors! Thanks for the idea RIck!

You got the old Crest hood ordament? Is it nice? Want to sell? DopeStar 156 01-04-06, 03:15 AM On the mirrors? Really? No offense but I was never a fan of that. I've seen it done a few times.... I put them on the locks though, I love that look.

I was considering either the mirrors or the locks, and I finally picked the mirrors by the logic she'd be getting a paint job someday and it would be something else to remove and re-glue. If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the chrome door edging? I like the light antelope I have now, but the chrome would probably look good too! davesdeville 01-04-06, 04:51 AM My old 78 Fleetwood Brougham had the wreath and crest on the lights. Those were sure cool. Maybe I'll try to hunt that car down if it hasn't already been crushed and find some way to get them into my 75's doors when I eventually redo the whole interior. Bro-Ham 01-04-06, 12:32 PM Hi,
The wreath and crest door courtesy light lens was on all Fleetwood models from 1977 through 1980. From 1981 on, the Fleetwood Brougham Sedan door panel had the wreath and crest below the door pull so it was eliminated from the lens. The Fleetwood Brougham Coupe models from 1981-1985 had the wreath and crest on the lens since they did not have it on the door panel like the sedans.
I have both a Fleetwood and a deVille and I really like the Fleetwood with the wreath and crests yet I also like the classic wreath-less hood ornament and the bold "V" with the crest on the trunk on the deVille. Both are totally Cadillac. When I purchased the 1979 deVille it had the wreath and crest hood ornament and I immediately replaced it with a plain crest bought on eBay. Everyone is different and it's fun to make our cars look the way we want them to our eyes.
Dave Night Wolf 01-04-06, 12:44 PM You got the old Crest hood ordament? Is it nice? Want to sell?
It is just the crest, no wreath, and the crest is bigger then the crest with the wreath. It isn't new.... 28 years old, driver condition...
I wasn't really looking to sell it... for the whole $20 I would get for it, if that... I may as well keep it since it is origanal to the car. Night Wolf 01-04-06, 12:45 PM On the mirrors? Really? No offense but I was never a fan of that. I've seen it done a few times.... I put them on the locks though, I love that look.

I personally don't like them on the mirror either...
Also at the junkyard I removed 2 (faded) gold wreaths around the door locks and added them to the '93 Coupe. Night Wolf 01-04-06, 12:50 PM Hi,

Oh yeah, I love the \/ too... which is why it is staying on the trunk and the steering wheel.
But the crest just looked plain on the front of the car... same with the light lens, so I added the ones with the wreath.... I guess since both of these didn't have a wreath or a \/, then it didn't matter to me.
None taken. I was considering either the mirrors or the locks, and I finally picked the mirrors by the logic she'd be getting a paint job someday and it would be something else to remove and re-glue. I know on my Olds and '79 it was a factory option, on the '93 they are body color. DopeStar 156 01-04-06, 02:18 PM None taken. The car came like that actually, those chrome door edge guards were standard equipment on the Broughams. I think they started painting them in 1990 or 1991 because my ex's 91 DeVille has the door edge guards but they're painted to match the body. Hit up a junkyard and pull the chrome ones off a late 80's Brougham. The things have done their job a buncha times I wasn't paying attention and just flung a door open. I think if you were to find a crest to fit inside the wreath, that'd be a nice combination... Without the crest, it kinda looks "hollow" Night Wolf 01-04-06, 10:04 PM Well, I went back today.....
I am going back tomorrow too :)
That '79 Fleetwood... I really want that alumnum hood... but upon closer inspection, there are quite a few little dents on the hood, like you were dropping golf balls on it or something.... I dunno, that and the fact that I really don't have the means to transport it or store it... PLUS, when I asked a body shop todya he said about $350 to paint it! That is with me supplying a perfect color match base coat also.
I really wanted the chrome trim that goes on the rockers and the back.... but it is kinda rough... the passenger side on the fender is bent, and because of the way they sit cars ontop of wheels, the rear left trim piece on the quarter panel is bent up alot.... plus, upon looking at it, I would have to drill into the body to mount the clips and stuff... I really don't want to do that.
I am going to see if 80's Brougham trim will fit the '79.... I know in front of the wheel it wont, but the rest may... if it does I'll pull the trim off one of the good cars there, otherwise forget it.
There is a '91 Sedan DeVille there with a pretty good front hit, yet the interior is like new... I mean the feel of the leather/vinyl just seems 2 years old, moving the light switch and stuff gives a nice firm click etc... so tomorrow I am going back to take the digital instrument panel, the fuel data center and the electronic climate control, as well as light switches and stuff... I want spares for my DeVille, plus I want a good digital cluster... I may do the swap, but I just want one.
There is a '92 Fleetwood there (FWD) I didn't have my Torx with me today, but I am going to get the dash trim, which is in really nice shape (real wood) only thing is the trim for the radio is missing (since the radio is gone)
Today was decent... spent $30, but ah well... I got the chrome trim piece on the left part of the FWD DeVille bumper, since my car got hit awhile back and bent it all up, now I have a new one, I polished it up, looks nice.
Then off that '79 Fleetwood I took both opra lamps... decent shape, but hell, the car is nearly 30 years old, spares are great to have. Same as mine, mine have a few more cracks but atleast I have spares. These are the nice kind that use little light bulbs and not the electroluminescent stuff.
Then, anyone familer with '77-'79 DeVilles know the '78 and '79 have orange colored parking light lens in the front of the car. Isn't the popular thing today with kids to put clear lens in? Well, '77 was the only year where the parking lights were clear lens and they used yellow bulbs.
I am going to put them in my car and see if I like the look or not. I am going to buy Sylvania Silver Start turn singal bulbs. Why? the blub itself has a blueish tint when off, yet it lights up amber! That is cool, so I'll put them in and see if I like it. There is another '77 there with the clear lights as well...if anyone is interested.... They were yellow and hazy, but Meguires Plastix cleaned them right up nice, in the one picture you can see 1 like it was before then the other after I cleaned it. DopeStar 156 01-04-06, 10:50 PM Oh yeah, I love the \/ too... which is why it is staying on the trunk and the steering wheel.

Have you ever concidered making a custom crest and \/ hood orniment? I'm sure it could be done if you took two C pillar \/'s or two trunk \/'s, cut a 90 degree lip in the middle and fit them around the bottom of the old crest, then welded them in place? Here's a diagram....
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/DopeStar156/customvhoodie.jpg 90Brougham350 01-04-06, 11:55 PM That sounds pretty sweet! Boy, you're getting good with MS Paint! :worship: Night Wolf 01-05-06, 12:36 AM heh, that looks pretty nice! the trunk \/ would be a good choice.
But I don't think it would look good on the top of the hood tho... I dunno.... DopeStar 156 01-05-06, 01:00 AM Tape one to your current hood orniment and see how you like it. If I had a RWD DeVille I'd so do it. 90Brougham350 01-05-06, 01:17 AM The craziest idea I've had for a hood ornament would be using 2 large wreaths and 2 crests, both from the trunk. Slot out the middle of the wreaths and then weld the ornament together. Drill a tiny (like 5/65th) hole in the very tip of each side of the wreath, and up through the middle of the post. Mount the ornament and hook it up to a tank of propane or butane under the hood. I don't know how you could spark it on the go, but cruising downtown on a Saturday night in the middle of summer with a huge hood ornament flaming a bright blue, I think it'd be pretty cool. Then again, I'm pretty loony. cadillacdeville 01-05-06, 01:26 AM Hey Night wolf, does the 77 still have the taillight lenses if so what's the condition of them and how much for both also what's the interior color of the car? Night Wolf 01-05-06, 01:54 AM There are 2 '77's 1 is a Coupe, about 3 '78s and 3 '79s, 1 is a Coupe.
They all have the tail lights, I don't remember the condition of the '77's as I didn't spent much time looking at them, but I'll check. Prices are pretty cheap, I think a tail light would be like $8 or something.
Don't remember interior... maybe tomorrow I'll bring the camera. Series75 01-05-06, 12:55 PM Does your '79 have the door lock pulls with the crests on them? I think the later year RWD Broughams had them.
I've changed the front chrome and hood on our '82 Series to be an '83. Nothing dramatic, but more chrome strips on the hood, and the donor car had better chrome than the '82. I also modified a '76 hood ornament to fit the '82 nose. It's 'slightly' larger, so better of course...:-)
Depending on how much work you want to do, some of the FWD Fleetwoods had pull down lighted vanity mirrors for the rear seats. I snagged a pair of them and have them sitting on a shelf somewhere. I'm not ready to cut into the headliner to install them yet.
Dave DaveSmed 01-05-06, 03:59 PM See if you can grab one of these out of one of the 89-93 FWD Devilles:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/davesmed/express.jpg
It would be in the drivers door, attached to a bracket that is mounted with two rivets. Press that little tab next to the connector, and give it a good tug, should unclip. Grab 5 of them, and I'll tell ya how to make all 4 windows in the '79 one-touch down, and that other window in the coupe one touch. (real good for the coupe, as those windows tend to be slow as hell)
BTW, it COULD be used to make it express up as well, but that window won't stop until its all the way up. Might be a bummer if say, your arm is in the way... LOL! I guess that's why no one ever made an express up window.... Night Wolf 01-05-06, 06:28 PM Does your '79 have the door lock pulls with the crests on them? I think the later year RWD Broughams had them.

door lock pulls? you mean the little thing you lift/push down to lock the door? If so... no, no crests on the '79....
There is a FWD Fleetwood there with the rear vanity mirrors, I was thinking about getting them for the '93 Coupe, but I really don't want them, or even like them... just something else for people in the back to play with anyway. Night Wolf 01-05-06, 06:29 PM LOL! I guess that's why no one ever made an express up window....
My friends '98 Jetta had express up AND down for all 4 windows :) Night Wolf 01-05-06, 06:32 PM See if you can grab one of these out of one of the 89-93 FWD Devilles:

Ah wow... neat...
But that means I gotta remvoe the door panel? I have removed mine more times then I care.....
Though it would be sweet, the express down comes in so handy! I wonder how much the junkyard would charge for 5 of them though... even if only $10 that is still $50 total...... I just dread pulling off the door panels....
Actually, I can't on the Coupe.... the doors have Dynamat Xtreme on the whole thing... no way I am tearing thru that to get at the wires, if anything I'll piick them up and put them away for future use... Night Wolf 01-05-06, 06:48 PM Anyway, today was a huge hit as well!
$92! ah well... $7.25 in core charges that I am gonna eat, becuase I am not bringing my old stuff back... I bought these as spares.
First, I have been wanting a spare FDC and ECC for the '93 Coupe for awhile now. As many of you know I am *never* getting rid of this car, and I would only feel better if I had spares.
Well, there is a '91 Sedan DeVille there, pretty good front-end hit.... yet the interior is/was nearly mint. The seats, except for a few tears caused by a person, are mint, they are more comfortable then the seats in the Coupe, and all 4 have the wreaths in the back of the seat! The interior is a different color then mine though.
Anyway, this car, the switches and buttons on the dash stuff felt like new, no wear at all.... and it also had the digital instrument cluster! All the others were dirty and wrecked up inside, but this car was in the back and really clean, so I got the digital instrument cluster, FDC and ECC, then the light switch and window lock switch... just as spares... for future use.
While the dash was off, I also took the twilight sentinal sensor and the sun load sensor... just as spares :)
I remember on the Bonnieville club, someone changed the green LCD stuff on the dash (same as our Caddys) to a really nice blue, simple by getting some sort of blueish tint translucent plastic and putting it over the screen.... I want to find out how he did that, and do it to my FDC and ECC, so they light up blue... then I am going to wire in the digital instrument cluster to my car, and I want that to be blue also. Blue is my favorite color, and if I could make all the LCD's appear blue, that would be sweet... match my XM and my Alpine.
Dave, I am gonna need some help wiring this digital instrument cluster in :) Mileage is unknown but that car HAD to be low mileage, I mean like not even 60k miles, it was freakin mint. Is there a way to get the mileage on the digital to be equal to what my car really has? could the dealer even do that?
At first I didn't want the digital speedo, but now I am hyped about it, and I actually want it alot now... well, I have it, just gotta put it in, and if I can make it blue, gosh, I'll be so happy.... here I go loving the '93 Coupe all over again :)
Oh yeah... he rear sway bar for the '79.... got that too :)
I got under the car and quickly saw it, then saw the bolts, I saw the C type bracket and remember to remove the whole thing. the 4 bolts on each side came off easy (brought the WD-40 :) ) and then it dropped right out... dirty/greesy, but perfect... I am happy. Then after I got back I looked under my DeVille, no sway bar, and the holes are already in the trailing arms exactly where they need to be! just a matter of putting the damn thing in there and bolting it up :) I am happy.
I wanted to see if that rear end had Posi, no tags, and without wheels, I coudln't tell by turning 1 side because the other was not visable. The drive shaft on that car is gone, so then I spun the wheel hub and counted how many times the input for the rear turned... for 1 turn of the wheel, the input turned about 1.5 times, almost twice.... I dunno what gear that comes out to be? I wonder what gears it has. It is a 10-bolt 8-7/8" just like in my '79 but has rear disc breaks since it is a Fleetwood... Posi is still unknown, but i didn't see a tag ont he cover or anything.
So here is the break down:
sway bar = $10
digital instrument cluster = $25
FDC and ECC = $15 each = $30 total
light switch and window lock = $6 each = $12 total
2 dash sensors were thrown in
+ $7.25 core that I am giving up, then tax and stuff.
and finally.... PICTURES! :) Night Wolf 01-05-06, 08:46 PM This is what I want to do to the digital IC, and both the FDC and the ECC..... my gosh it would be SWEET... just gotta find a place that has the blue colored film.....
check it out... DAMN it is NICE.... Pontiac has the same green LCD's s we have, so it is the same thing.. I am going to take everything apart to put the film on, so it looks factory :)
http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26766&highlight=blue+dash+lights DaveSmed 01-05-06, 09:33 PM That film should be a cinch to find. Cut up a transparent blue folder, or get that gift saran wrap. The bare Vacuum flourscent display lights up pretty much white, its that green filter in the way that would need to be removed for best results. Might also want to grab the Twilight Sentinel control unit. It's a little white box, located right around the back of where the windshield deice button would be located. Good for a spare,(sometimes the contacts get toasted) or to retrofit on another car. Those two sensors would be good to experiment with, because youll have them just in case one way or another, but on that note they RARELY fail. Good grab on the switches too. For the Posi, look around the jacking instructions. If it takes great care to tell you NOT to run the engine when changing a tire, it may just be a posi unit. With that gauge cluster.... You got some extra harness, right? 90Brougham350 01-06-06, 12:36 AM OK, idea of the year award goes to Rick! Is it safe to guess the green screen comes out of the Brougham's digital dash? What color would look good in a Brougham? Rick, you gotta write a detailed report of this when you do it! Night Wolf 01-06-06, 12:39 AM oh, there will be LOTS of pictures! :)
Nope, the green tinted lens stays, this simple goes on the inside of the lens (so you don't see it from in the car) and the blue overpowers the green tint, and gives it a blue color... it'll be REALLY nice. You can make it nearly any color you want.
proably do it tomorrow :) 90Brougham350 01-12-06, 12:18 PM Any luck yet Rick? Night Wolf 01-15-06, 03:08 PM well, I am back...
the changing the LED to blue was a whole lot harder then I thought, so green stays for now, I don't mind it.
Back to the '79....
there is a '79 *factory* limo here, local, the guy is parting out.
IIRC they have a 3.08 rear? I think drum brakes and no Posi? still.... should I look into that? | |
