LONDON - Virgin Galactic, the British company created by entrepreneur Richard Branson to send tourists into space, and New Mexico announced an agreement Tuesday for the state to build a $225 million spaceport. Virgin Galactic also revealed that up to 38,000 people from 126 countries have paid a deposit for a seat on one of its manned commercial flights, including a core group of 100 "founders" who have paid the initial $200,000 cost of a flight upfront. Virgin Galactic is planning to begin flights in late 2008 or early 2009.

I'll probably never find the money but going into space is something I would truly like to do. I want to see Earth from orbit, want to see the way Lake Superior looks from space. I might be nuts, but I think this is fascinating.

One day you won't need 200K to go to space: it'll be much cheaper, but not in our lifetime...

Branson is my hero. He'll do anything just because he can.
Its his 'crazy' that makes him insanely cool.

I dunno if id be so sure about that. I would be wiling to bet that by the time you and I are in our 70's, you could probably go for 5-10k if not less. Technology is moving at an astonishing pace.

Oh I sure hope it is. Does anyone remember that scene from "Space Cowboys," where Clint Eastwood is finally in space, looking down on Italy? That's what I want!

Most of my clients are betting space toursim will be up and running in a decade.
Othewise the big bucks they pay us to design these rockets and space hotels just doesn't add up....

I used to trade stocks, convertible bonds, credit derivatives for an investment bank in NYC and Tokyo.....but I quit a couple years ago, moved here to SoCal and joined a start up engineering consulting firm. (all my degrees and my passion are in engineering)

The clients I speak of in my post #11 are actual aerospace companies that we do design/test/analysis for. So much more interesting but such a huge pay cut its not even funny.

Anyways, I agree that technology is by and far moving quite well, but for the general public to just go into space on a cheap whim might be a stretch...I hope not though...
