: 06 Nav system questions

Trying to decide if I should get the nav or not.

1) Are there steering wheel controls?
2) How much of the radio (and other car functions) are tied into the touchscreen?
3) How much of the nav system can be used while the car is moving? I think I read somewhere that you're locked out while moving? I'd hate to be locked out especially since it would most come in useful on long trips when I've most likely got a passenger that could do it for me?
4) Does the nav system have an input for a rear video camera?
5) Does the stereo system have an aux input for like an ipod or something similar?
6) Does the XM radio show song title, etc normally?
7) How configurable/flexible are the screen display options?

thanks!

I'll attempt to answer from my '04 system:

1) Only to speak commands.
2) LOTS!
3) A little. Wish it was more, but it's useable.
4-5-6) Not that I know of. There are NO input ports internally or externally.
7) Very.

Thanks. I got a chance to see it today but actually not really. It didn't have a Nav disc in it. I did listen to it and it sounded good. The screen was easy to read but the sun was going down.

How well has the screen held up to constant touching? Any scratches? Do they sell protectors for the screens like they do for PDAs?

How happy are you with the ease of setting up a goto route?
Once you plot a route, if you deviate from it, does it quickly determine a new route from your current location?
How accurate and plentiful are the points of interest? Does it accurately list gas stations, restaurants, ATMs?

The screen has no scratches (I bite my finger nails. :) ) but it always has smudges, which really can't be seen with the unit on--only noticeable with it off. Caddy says to clean it with alcohol, so I bought a box of individual alcohol packets from the drug store & use periodically. Does a great job.

Ease of setting is fairly easy--just gotta get used to it--AND be stopped at the time! :(

The unit re-routes you almost immediately if you deviate from route.

POI's are quite accurate and plentiful, even though I'm still on v3.0 because I don't feel the need to pay $200+ for updates yet.

BTW: Wife's new Jeep Commander w/ Nav is a bit more intuitive, but lacks touch screen, voice input, and the SRX's map detail. Besides, It won't let me watch DVD movies at all! Far prefer the SRX's NAV!

1) Are there steering wheel controls? Steering wheel volume control, mute, onstar and 4 programmable buttons.

2) How much of the radio (and other car functions) are tied into the touchscreen? All radio/CD functions are part of the on-screen controls. Vehicle information such as oil life, tire pressure, and many others are viewable or reset through the radio head.

3) How much of the nav system can be used while the car is moving? I think I read somewhere that you're locked out while moving? I'd hate to be locked out especially since it would most come in useful on long trips when I've most likely got a passenger that could do it for me? Almost all functions that have anything to do with navigation are disabled when moving. I think you can scroll the map but you can't enter any info. If you go off your "track" the computer will recalculate usually before you reach the next intersection. Once you input a destination there is no real need to use it while the car is in motion. You can use it in gear, just not while you are moving.

4) Does the nav system have an input for a rear video camera? No, but I know some people are trying to figure that out.

5) Does the stereo system have an aux input for like an ipod or something similar? Not that I have seen. The only one I have seen with an input like that is the new DTS.

6) Does the XM radio show song title, etc normally? Yes

7) How configurable/flexible are the screen display options?
Typical display type settings, brightness, contrast, etc.
Not sure what you are looking for here. I don't know of any way to do custom screens but the nav system also has lots of view modes as well.

WOW! Thanks!

#4. I hope they figure it out. Seems like such a simple feature to have. Would help so much backing up to the trailer.

#5. Real shame given how many people own large MP3 players now and many other manufacturers are adopting external player type integration. Cadillac doesn't even have bluetooth. My sisters 30k TL has that and it works real nice.

#7. What I was after was that sitting in the demo yesterday, it looked like the radio was just a small bar across the top of the screen. The vehicle info was a small section in the upper right corner. For most normal activities, she's probably not going to need the map. It 'seems' like unless you're actually in CD mode to show all those buttons, it's then going to be showing a map. I was hoping the stereo had a more optimized mode that used the whole screen (to show station, song, in a larger font maybe). And that the vehicle information had a mode that showed more data at once (used up the whole screen) in bigger fonts.

New questions:
1) Does it handle CD-R media?
2) Does it play MP3s burned to a CD?
3) How does the display react when the headlights are on and for night time driving? Does it have good contrast or is it still illuminating the interior of the car?

thanks again!

I think they are working to get these plug in type devices to work in the car just because of their growing popularity.
The new STS has bluetooth and the DTS has a jack in the front of the radio for 'compatible' devices.

You can change the radio display, if you press the CD button on the side it changes to show the changer, if you press tuner it shows a large tuner screen that is also not as customizable as you'd probably like.
As far as vehicle info, I am not sure how to display more than one thing at a time but all you have to do to change the display parameter is hit that blue button that shows whatever you are looking at.
I am 99% sure there are settings for day or night mode based on your preferences. The touch screen setup they are using is just like the slightly older setup in the Devilles. It's much better to me than the pushbutton style they have been using in CTS.

I was under the impression they were making these MP3 compatible but I haven't verified that yet. I am not sure if I have anything to make MP3s... I might have some software at home but I rarely have time to mess with it.

I haven't had any problems using CDr's that have the "compact disc" logo on them.
In fact I have a couple burned in my toolbox that I use for testing busted radios and verifying the proper operation of a replacement unit.

If you check back sometime later I'll see if I can answer your MP3 question.

The screen dims quite nicely what the headlights come on.

CD-R's YES! Mp3's NO, at least on my '04. Hopefully they have/will change that.

Most any CD/DVD burning software will have the option to burn Mp3's.

Regarding the Nav lockout while moving and only being able to use voice commands:

If we're driving down the interstate and we get hungry or need gas, will I be able to find out what's at the next exit? If so, can I only find out via a voice command?

And what happens in response to a voice command? Does it speak back to me or the screen changes?

Seems weird that they'll lockout the Nav but not the touch radio functions.
