: The Record Store

Elvis has many hobbies, one of which is discovering and uncovering musical oddities on the world wide web. In the old days, he listened to short-wave radio. When he was a child, his grandparents had numerous 78 rpm records from the 1920's and 1930's he would play on rainy days.

The record player eventually broke. The quality of the short-wave broadcasts deteriorated with the advent of solid state electronics.

Poor Elvis was stuck with nothing to do. UNTIL that wonderful day when Larry the cable guy installed BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS in his house!!! Git-R-Done!!!

In the coming weeks Elvis will share with you some musical links that he found amusing, entertaining, and sometimes downright DISTURBING!!! If something is not work safe, YOU WILL BE WARNED.

This one is entirely open to your interpretation of it:

How many here even KNOW what a record store is?

Do such things even EXIST anymore? :histeric:

Today we might have TWO entries!

EDIT: I think it may be inappropriate to flash this picture without a warning. It's probably work safe, unless you work in a Baptist Church or something.

We use to have a record store but the department stores ran them out of business. I bought mostly 45rpm singles and a few 33rpm albums. Some 45s had as many a 4 songs on a record. I still have some of my 45s but nothing to play them on.

The record store had sound boths that allowed you to listen to a song before you bought it. On Friday nights after school the place was crowded. Less than a block down the street was a Teen Dance Hall. Nice memory..thanks.:D

Here's one for you. Ever hear of a "Wire Recorder"? They actually were able to record voice and music on the surface of a thin wire. My friend had one. It's the only one I've ever seen and the quality was reasonable for the time.

Back on topic, this is what a record store looked like. You stored your records vertically so they wouldn't warp. Anybody watch a warped 33 record on the turntable? Remember what a turntable was?:histeric:

Remember when Black & White photos were the only option? Same with television.
Ain't Nostalgia great! One advantage of being older.

I bought a new Stanton turntable about a year ago or so. It has a digital input so DJ's can mix CD's with LP's. It plays 33 1/3, 45 and 78. I can also play them backwards, although I don't no why I would. But best of all, there is no negative lead wire!!

I like to purchase records for $1 at the Salvation Army not only because of the low low cost, but also the obsurity in selections.

You'd be surprised at how many 'new' 45's and LP's are still being produced. And in LA, there are plenty of stores that sell new and used LP's.
