Hey all I'm a newbie here and i have a simple question (maybe). I have an 88 sedan deville with the 4.5 and my AIR pump is going bad. I was wondering if i can just get rid of it and if so if anyone new what size belt i would need. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Disconnecting emissions equipment in most states is called "illegal".
It's called tampering.
Now if you live in a non-emissions state then of course you don't have to worry about the law, just the air you breathe.
How do you know the pump is going bad?

Might be easier to find a replacement pump rather than mess with the belts to bypass it.
Sorry to sound like a stooge.

Best of luck to you either way.

well i got in there and it is not the Air pump like originally thought. it is the damn ac compressor that is grinding. how about a belt to bypass that. any ideas. I am glad though that i live in michigan we don't emission test here. Too much auto industry pull probably LOL.

Thanks.

can you just take a string and wrap it around the belt path,
Then measure it and try and find a belt that length at the autoparts store.

BTW, if the AC is off, isn't it just free wheeling? (or it makes a noise even when the ac cluthc is disengaged?)
