So, basically my first car...and being winter, Im not too sure what is normal. Its around 50 out here...and my car is a smokin! When I start, even after driving, especially when idling after driving, huge clouds of smoke come out of the tail pipes. I mean, its a lot, I dont know if anyone else has this much, but its like big, heavy smoke that travels. I also think it has a sweet smell to it but I havnt noticed any performance drops or any excessive drops in the coolant. What is normal? P.S about 3 months ago, it over heated- no problems since then. So guys, any ideas? Thank you!

A sweet smell is usually coolant. Are you sure you aren't loosing any?? The other night it got down to the high 40's over night and my 98 deville wasn't smoking (some small amounts of steam comming out of the tail pipes) but not billowing clouds of smoke....

sounds like headgasket and pretty bad too if you have white smoke out the tailpipes

Have a compression test done to see if the headgaskets are leaking.

yea, but it only happens in cooler weather, ill get a check, im really curious as to what is wrong!

Got a question, when is it suppose to smoke more? When the engine is cold or hot? If I knew, I will post a pic and maybe you guys could diagnose if its toooo much? Thanks guys!

a freind of mine had a lebaron and it overheated one time he had smoke in the exhaust he needed to replace the head gasket and he also had to have new piston rings put in because the oil got past the rings major blow by so he was burning about a quart of oil a week. and it did billow it kind of had a sweet smell but it wasnt that much of a sweet smell. It smelled just like burning oil but he still was burning off some antifreeze. Two weeks later he took it off the road and we used it for a field car till it caught on fire. Almost got him to get a 90 Coupe DeVille with 67k new tires new brakes and new a/c system. The old dude that had it only wanted 1200 for it! It was white with a sun roof too with tan leather seats. But he bought himself a 96 S10 ext cab with after market wheels tires and clear brake lights. So yea have a place check to see if you are burning antifreeze and definatly do a compression check. Oh by the way how many miles are on your car? My friends labaron had like... 320 i think on it something outrageous i dont quite remember.
