: Best sounding engines of all time?
11-05-05, 12:45 PM
Hey, what do you all think are the best sounding engines of all time?
Heres what I think
- Cadillac 4.9 V8, nice raspy, aggravated exhaust tone when stock, if you stab the throttle when its idling, its got a nice bite to it.
- N*, It sounds like an old muscle car, but smoother, I'm surprised when I hear them drive by
-Nissan 3.5 V6, very smooth, deep sounding exhaust (for a V6)
-Dodge 440 V8, just watch the movie "Bullitt" and tell me
-Mercedes 5.5 Supercharged V8, superchargers sound cool period, then stack it on a V8 and have one hell of a nice sounding motor!
-Ford Lightning 5.8 V8- loud like a Nascar V8.
Thats all I can think of now, im sure more will come to me later.

Nothing sounds quite like a Mustang Cobra with a nice exhaust. Those 4.6's sound so nice! I also like the Boxster engines from Subaru as well. Get a nice exhaust on them and they almost sound like deep sounding V8

Here are mine
Mercedes 6.0 V12
Rover 3500 V8
Vauxhall 2.6 V6 (again, for a V6)
Bentley 6.75 V8

ah interesting. Blackout, I drove a '93 Mark VIII w/ cobra V8, I thought it sounded quite nice, very muscular with a nice burble sound. They sound exceptional w/ custom exhaust.

Engines from my own experience.
Olds 307 in my Fleetwood especially at low speeds, sounds really chuggy.
Ford 4.6 in my dad's '05 Mustang GT.
The DeVille's 4.9.
Ford 5.0 in my old Mark VII. Sounded really mean when floored.
Chevy 350 in the '93 Fleetwood Brougham I drove, mean sound.
Caddy 425 in the '79 Coupe de Ville I test drove.
Caddy 472 in the '69 Sedan de Ville I so despirately want.

My Roadmaster's 350LT1 didnt sound that good at all. I think of it sounding like the 4.3 V6, with just a general roar to it.

The 390 in our 59 Eldo has a nice sound to it.
11-05-05, 02:13 PM
426 HEMI in the 1970 'Cuda/Challenger.

I had the opp. one time to see a Cigarette boat with two Lamborghini marine V-12s side by side...
The sound killed every flounder for 100 yards around.
Also, a Russian T-55 makes a scary sound when it's around the corner of the building.. :)

Are you talking about the tank?
11-05-05, 04:28 PM
Buick "Indy" or Menard V6 @ Indy in the short chutes (same thing)
Offenhouser @ Indy
Pratt and Whitney TF-33 (all eight @ 100% on a B52 at takeoff)
C5R at sebring , midway up the backstrech to sunset bend
Ferarri F1 V-10
Porsche 962 at daytona
Mazda-Kudzu at daytona (what a shreeker)
Team Cadillac CTS-V standing next to it dureing warmup :

Best sounding? 5L Mustang engines sound incredible. 351 Cleveland with shorty headers is insane too.
But imho, nothing compares to practically any of Ferrari's engines. I have a chance to drive an F360 while I was driving a last-gen Z06. Both were stock, and both sounded great. But total different sounds. Z06 sounds more like a nascar engine, whereas the Ferrari had a major F1 tone.
In terms of 6cyl's, I think BMW's newest 6 is quite incredible. Mercedes V6 3.2L sounds great too, with a new exhuast. Nissans 3.5L is nice in the 350z, but too muffled in its other applications.
One of the best stock sounds is the Honda S2000.
I would have to say the Ford GT40 they used the "sound over" for on the movie Bullitt for Steve McQueens 1968 Mustang GT. If you listen carefully, you can hear them double clutching on the chase scene..

A lot of you guys aren't old enough to remember the Tri Power GTO 389 and Pontiac 421. When the secondaries open on those 3X2 barrells, the angels would stop to listen.:cool2:
Ford 4.6 DOHC- The sucker roars at WOT.
Chverolet 350- Sounds like a monster when straight piped.
Chverolet 454- My subwoofer cant go deep enough to reproduce that sound.
#1 - LS6 in a CTS-V with Billy Boat X-Pipe and Headers (crapped myself the first time I started it in my garage)
#2 - Darryl Gwynn's Top Fuel Dragster at Bradenton for the Snow Bird Nationals. This was the year he crashed and ended up in a wheel chair.
#3 - Cadillac's Sweet 16. Nope, I've never heard it, but I can dream can't I?

I have to agree with Blackout on the Mustang 4.6 liter engines; not a whole lot compares.
The 4.9 liter sounds very nice with the right exhaust (I wish I could post a sound clip of mine), but still doesn't compare to the Mustang 4.6 liter...
The only one that does is my dad's 79' Z28 with a 327 bored .060 over with the timing gears as noisy as can be. With the sickening exhaust note he has on that thing, plus the timing gear whine, it is the greatest sound I have ever heard from a car. Period.
I wish to whatever force I could achieve those two sounds from my 4.9 liter without having something broken to make those sounds...

Hey illumina. I haven't seen you on here in a lil bit. Good to see your still on the board
11-05-05, 11:25 PM
Porsche Carrera GT. 5.7l V10 :bonkers:
Any Pontiac V8 with a Ram Air IV cam....
Especially the 428 with the Ram Air IV (low 12's w/2.73's and 3600#)

Porsche Carrera GT. 5.7l V10 :bonkers:
There's one of those running around Albuquerque... I gotta say I don't like that or the Viper V10 for that matter. Or the 6.8L Ford V10. V10s just sound funny.
I don't particularly like the 4.6 modular's sound either, 2v or 4v. The 5.0 sounded much better.
My Northstar sounds pretty damn good though through magnaflows.
My 78 sounded pretty cool when I had the exhaust dumping out where the cat should've been.
I have to say, one of the coolest would be my friend's 76 Continental Town Coupe with the 460. The engine's big and it has a dual exhaust system on it... not sure of the mufflers. It's not loud at all it just makes redonkulous BASS.
What I want to hear is a 540" BBCad at 6000rpms through cutouts. It'll just have to wait until sometime next year though.
11-06-05, 11:45 AM
I have never heard a N* that sounded better than yours.
11-06-05, 09:48 PM
how bout a merlin 509 c.i. in a 69 nova with dual lake pipes. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
11-06-05, 09:50 PM
eh, my 307 in my '88 brougham sounds pretty good. no muffler, just a cat, have a little lope to the idle now with a different cam.
11-06-05, 09:59 PM
Personally, nothing sounds better than a super-high revving 383 Stroker. 9000 rpm just screams something fierce. Of course, as already mentioned, the low rumble of a big block is something you can't beat. Always fun to see how many car alarms you can set off on a Friday night in your buddy's 85 454 half-ton.
no one mentioned a ferrari yet, the 360 sounds amazing.
11-06-05, 11:03 PM
a late model V12 Aston Martin is just mind boggling :banghead: , i had to look up if a fighter jet was passing overhead real close. but then i noticed a Vanquish fly by and leave me wondering for like almost a year now, it's just that cool :cool2:
besides that, my N* with a cold air intake sounds really cool. an M3 has a wierd but cool tone. a chevy small block sounds nice, but it's too common these days.
well, there's alot of stuff driving around where I live, and especially where i go shopping. I expected more from a stock old model SRT/10 Viper, a Ford GT sounds really nice, the Gallardo sounds really cool with awsome bangs at shifts :) , a Mercedes Maclaren SLR is just like any 55 AMG but lounder, the 360 Ferrari is a little on the high note side but that makes it different, the new SRT/10 Vipers have very loud low exhaust notes.
besides that there's alot of rice can exhasts around here, nothing worth noting.
Ok, best sounding factory exhaust of all time?
427 Cobra. Next? Ferrari Daytona V12 (6x2BBL) You all do have a copy of the Gumball Rally don't you??? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/630026985X/102-9792018-6908916?v=glance
I have seen a few 427 Cobras in person. AWESOME. Bet they mess up seismic sensors worldwide when you drop the hammer....
And I agree Dave, V10's suck, they sound terrible. And the funnything on the 302's? I remember in 87 complaining how bad the 302 sounds, and kids thought they sounded good! They didn't hardly know a V8 exhaust then!! The 302 sounded weak. 455 Pontiac with headers and duals with turbo mufflers sounded awesome! My 455 had manifolds and 2in duals and still sounded great. I miss it!!!
Ok, everyone, if you have a good sounding exhaust, can we post it on here?
My 350 Olds is here: http://tech.oldsgmail.com/exhaust_hooker.html.
I might have to fire up the 400 T/A for a new one.
Stereo guys if you can, if you need help editing, let me know and I can edit it for you to make it smaller for the net.
11-06-05, 11:16 PM
everyhting else sucks
I would vote for the supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin V12
That F4 Phantom fuel-to-noise converter :)
And my 500cid with Camaro straight through dampener sounds cool too
11-07-05, 10:12 AM
i liked my 4.5 with flowmasters. The sound clips i've heard and the stock Charger R/T i heard sound great. Any thing Hemi will do.
11-07-05, 10:15 AM
I think a honda engine especially with a lot of stickers.
11-09-05, 08:19 AM
I have never heard a N* that sounded better than yours.
Thanks. The mic on my friend camera is pretty good apparently.
Oh, and whats up Pimpin Whity, haven't noticed you around here in awhile :)
BTW I think most V6s sound pretty weird. But the 3100 in my friends Corsica sounded pretty good through a Flowmaster (it was just plain loud with a glasspack.) Same muffler on a 3800 doesn't sound nearly as cool.
11-09-05, 08:30 AM
speaking of flowmasters...heres a Charger Daytona with flowmaster 40s....i love...
