View Full Version : How many of us still have the gold keys? ocjmakaveli 10-28-05, 06:55 AM I still have my gold keys which I use everyday I'm starting to wonder if I should stop using my gold keys and just use the plain ones for storage value I don't want them to break.I also still have the wallet key which works to start the car in case the key gets lost. davesdeville 10-28-05, 07:22 AM That's the problem with buying used I guess. Neither of my cars have (well, the 75 probably never had) those. I keep a spare door key in my wallet anyway though, since I used to be prone to locking my keys in my car (haven't done that since January though, knock on wood.) caddycruiser 10-28-05, 08:02 AM We have them for our '93 FWB, even though the gold is a little worn off in a few places. Typically, for daily use, I keep the "regular" silver ignition key with the black plastic cap on it and the gold key for the door locks on my key ring. Don't have that wallet key thing however--I don't think I've ever seen one of those.
I think they're really cool and people are always interested when I show them.:) Katshot 10-28-05, 08:35 AM I still have the gold keys for my car and I still have a couple uncut sets from when I had the fleet cars. And BTW, you won't get too far with "starting" your car with the wallet key, it's only a DOOR key. 90Brougham350 10-28-05, 09:43 AM I've got my keys! caddydaddy 10-28-05, 10:04 AM I have and use the gold keys for my '94 Deville daily. I USE MINE TOO.:)
I USE EVERYTHING I OWN. USE IT. IT'S LATER THAN YOU THINK, REGARDLESS OF AGE.:bigroll:
THINGS ARE NOT IMPORTANT. USE YOUR GOLD KEYS,RUN YOUR TURNPIKE LOCOMOTIVE TO THE HILT.
THE ONLY COFFINS I EVER SAW HAD HANDLES, NOT POCKETS!:helpless: I have the gold keys for mine and use them everyday. The gold is getting a faded. I've been looking for another set but all I can find is the gold keys without pass-lock. On another note I still have both remotes but I think the batteries are getting weak they will only work if you are 2 feet from the Caddy. CaddymanTom 10-28-05, 12:32 PM I too have the gold keys for both the Brougham and the Eldo. I have a set of blanks that i need to get cut but havent done so yet. So my gold key inventory is looking good I have them. I may have used them once or twice but I don't like to. Somehow I associate them with the "bling" concept I so much dislike. Have two sets of Caddy gold keys for my car (remotes also), my wife carries a set and I have the other. We are the third owners and it made its way to us.
Don't have the wallet thing, never seen that before, either. ocjmakaveli 10-28-05, 02:24 PM I still have the gold keys for my car and I still have a couple uncut sets from when I had the fleet cars. And BTW, you won't get too far with "starting" your car with the wallet key, it's only a DOOR key.
yeah your probably right i just never tried the key because i dont want to dislodge it from the rest of the plastic piece.
I am just surprised that although I'm the second owner of the car the keys are still useable it is btw an 11 year old car.
The wallet thing I think only came with the road service package I guess the previous owner got that package from the dealer. The letters are starting to fade probably from being in my wallet so much I'm probably going to keep them in storage now I can't imagine breaking them now after 11 years of use.I really never used the wallet key and it doesn't look used. DopeStar 156 10-28-05, 03:09 PM I bought my car with one set of the silver GM keys. I got on ebay and bought two pairs of the gold blanks, had one cut and I use those. They still look good, not brand new, but good. You can always buy the blanks and have them cut if you want a shinny new pair. They're all over ebay. ocjmakaveli 10-28-05, 03:32 PM dope the problem for the vats system it has a resistor on the key and they don't sell the gold keys with the resistor I'm not sure though if it's possible to put a resistor on there although it's probably not too hard. brougham 10-28-05, 06:07 PM Mine came with all the original keys. There's 2 sets of gold keys and 2 sets of normal GM ones. I always use one of the gold keys. I also have some spare sets of gold keys. I got one of them cut and I'm keeping the rest for when I need them or if I ever get another Brougham that doesn't have them. I~LUV~Caddys8792 10-28-05, 06:14 PM I have both pairs of the factory gold keys. and I have a set of the silver ones. So all in all, I have 3 pairs. And 2 remotes that still work. I got really lucky! You talkin' about that little chip thing on the ignition key? Yeah they do, they sell gold blanks with blank chips on them. There's a way to program it into the car too. I forget how but I think Dave's Deville knows how. fisherman 10-29-05, 01:42 AM I am the second owner and I have both sets and remotes. Bling Bling, funny cause someone just said how cool they look when they saw them. I'm like yeah there cool! addison_ii 10-29-05, 05:00 AM I have my gold keys for my SLS and had the gold keys for my Deville(93) and my ETC(93) as well. I need a new remote for the SLS however. I~LUV~Caddys8792 10-29-05, 11:33 AM I have my gold keys for my SLS and had the gold keys for my Deville(93) and my ETC(93) as well. I need a new remote for the SLS however.
does your 89 Town Car have gold keys also? I think Lincoln used gold keys too. DopeStar 156 10-29-05, 12:20 PM I've never seen Lincoln gold keys. They had keys with the Lincoln emblem on them but they were never gold. I~LUV~Caddys8792 10-29-05, 12:43 PM yeah...I remember that now...Lincoln's keys have a square head, with the Lincoln emblem in the middle, and the key is cut on both sides.
By the way, when did Cadillac start using gold keys? I'm thinking somewhere in the '70s. HotRodSaint 10-29-05, 01:43 PM I don't use my gold keys. And I don't have the plastic key.
But I have the calculator and pen!! :) lacmang 10-29-05, 06:49 PM I didn't realize the gold keys were such a big deal, I thought all Cadillacs came with them from some certain time period. I still have the leather case with the Caddy pen, calculator and memo pad which is still blank. I still have the gold set that was never used. (couple scratches on it) I'm using the other gold set and they are faded quite badly. I should have used the silver set but then I still want to enjoy the gold myself... ocjmakaveli 10-29-05, 07:34 PM buy them while you can I was just informed about this ebay auction with a whole bunch of keys for a fair price
all u need to know is hte value of the vats system pellet ur key has which is easy to get with a multimeter

None of my current Cadillacs have them

I think thats a bit over the edge.
They are keys. If you ever sell your car the buyer isint gona change his mine because your gold keys are worn. or you have regular ones. It doesnt ad value either.
My cousin had a 99 ETC and wiht gold keys, yes they are nice. She said i should get them for my Brougham, but my GM silver keys work fine, and i have 2 sets. They are either in your pocket, ignition, or counter top/key rack. caddycruiser 10-29-05, 11:56 PM Yeah, really. I understand wanting to keep something unique as perfect as possible, but when you get down to it, they're just keys, and after seeing Ebay, getting a brand new set doesn't seem hard at all.
Keys are keys....well, unless you drive something more recent where the key and the remote are the same thing, then, well, you have something different.... 1990CaddyBrougham 10-30-05, 12:09 AM Thats like my buddy has a 91? Eldorado with mint factory reversable floor mats, he wants to get new aftermarket ones so he doesnt wreck these OEM ones.
I told him to get a f**ing life and dont bother.
If he puts them away and keeps them presine he cant use/enjoy them. (dont know if you can really enjoy floormatts lol) But get what im saying?
Now if it was a classic car then thats a different story.
I have a 1957 Chevy Belair with 69k origninal miles. Everything there and OEM. I drive it as is, though watch waht i do. I have all the orignal manuals and window stickers, and mats and stuff. True, and good point. I tend to be one of the "floormat crazies", since I like to keep all of the stock carpet ones cleaned and then have a set of fitted vinyl ones over top, but that's not too much overkill--only my father thought it was nuts and took the extra set of stock ones out of his car "because he didn't need to carry around the extra useless weight."
But that's pretty normal. On the other hand, I run a part-time detailing business in the summer and when I'm on break, and my best client is about as weird as anal (or crazy...) when it comes to this. First she has the stock carpet mats. Then she has a set of slightly darker colored carpet aftermarket mats. THEN, on top of those, she keeps a set of custom-fit matching vinyl mats. I still don't have a clue what the middle set is for, but her car is one of the best cared for I've ever seen, so I don't ask questions.
HOWEVER, when she told me this: "Yeah, I keep those 3 sets in there all the time and then when winter time comes, I sometimes put an old towel or two down on top of those to keep the rubber ones nice.".....I about crapped myself.....:histeric:
Then again, I have been known to yell at people for even thinking of touching the window switches after I've cleaned the car, or that they need to close the door by touching only the inside of the door handle or any textured plastic trim so they don't make a fingerprint....got one of my friend's in high school laughing for an hour after I made him agree to do the latter when we were in my mom's old Avalanche....I said it was "the RULE". 1990CaddyBrougham 10-30-05, 12:30 AM That lady is over the edge.
Like i can see rubber ones for winter of if you are at the muddy junkyard. Like i have gray ineroir (LIGHT gray) in my town car, i have a old marron one from my buddies old Crown Vic for when i go to the junkyard with my muddy boots.
I am a bit anal when i have a clean car, but dont make people remove there shoes when they get it. (hope i didnt give you a idea) lol caddycruiser 10-30-05, 12:33 AM That lady is over the edge.

Haha...hmm....:D
But back to the keys--they're cool, but easily replaceable and not worth "locking in the vault", at least IMHO. ocjmakaveli 10-30-05, 02:57 AM Well the keys are not "easy to get" so far they are only available in this auction and he says himself he only has a limited supply.
The dealer does not make them anymore and will not make anymore of them.
There are no aftermarket places that make the gold keys. Plating doesn't count because you still can't get the crest on the key, at least not for a reasonable price.
Preserving a key to me is a much more important thing than per say stickers....
as for 1990 caddy:
I don't care about preserving the key for resale value that would be like saying that you have the stickers from your classic car for resale value...
I think you contradict your self very well because if we don't take care of these cars now what will happen when they become classics in 20 years or so.How can you say you have the window stickers etc. from a 1957 but yet if you or possibly the previous owner had not taken care of that car 40 years ago none of those rare items would still be there today. These cars are the last of it's kind as we know it, they are the next classics.
The gold keys were never sold separately the dealer as I was told just made enough for each new car buyer to have 2 sets and that is it. caddycruiser 10-30-05, 10:14 AM Well the keys are not "easy to get" so far they are only available in this auction and he says himself he only has a limited supply.

Okay, that's a good point--I'll take it. I guess I could see how they are relatively valuable, but mainly just as a "collector piece". If they become classics, the stock fully loaded cars will be of most value.
Which means 18" or 22" wheels, rear disc, posi rear, K&N intakes will all devalue these car's.
So enjoy them, and invest your money is the stock market!! :) 1990CaddyBrougham 10-30-05, 12:47 PM I dont think they will be classics, or sought after all that much. These days noone really cares.
I have all those things becasue that was someting that came with the car. I didnt even know. I bought the car at auction, it was a recoverd theft. But a nice bonus, but i wouldnt have paind more knowing they were included.
But im doubting the whole "these cars will be classics"
Look at the cadillacs of the 70's and 80's, along with the Lincolns. Bepople buy them, but not many, and they sell cheap. These days people just junk a car when they are beat to the ground, or pass it to someone else who does the beating or use it up.
The value is dropping in these big cars. HotRodSaint 10-30-05, 01:08 PM But im doubting the whole "these cars will be classics"
These '94-'96 Fleetwoods have two groups going after tham, Cadillac enthusiasts and Impala SS enthusiasts.
So of all the late model Cadillacs, these might rise in value to some degree.
But I wouldn't count on it...and the Impala SS will always be worth more, even though it cost less new and they built more of them. ocjmakaveli 10-30-05, 05:40 PM You have to look at it in perspective as cars progress quicker the rarer cars will eventually become classics.
No one 50 years ago not ford or chevy could have been thinking that in the year 2000+ there current year production would be a classic car etc. or that there would be a restoration industry etc.
it's easy to think right now when there are 30000+ fleetwoods out there but seeing as these were made in the 94-96 time they will eventually become scarce as any other vehicle would become
I don't and never will care about stock classic car value because to me it's just boring to have the exact same car, part for part for 10+ years I truly intend to have my car for at least 20 years and if and when I die I already have plans for who will keep my car with the explicit instructions and they Cannot sell it
I would prefer to have 10 cars in 10 years in a big parking lot that are all mine instead of living the traditional american way of always trading in crap for more crap and always having only 1 car which isn't my idea of working for a living to just have one car.
I was offered $10,000(he first said $8,000 for his first offer) by this old white guy driving a mercedez the other day in a gas station and I almost said YES :cookoo: but I just politely told him that I just couldn't sell it because all the little things I've done to it over the 4 years past just can't be recovered with money. He gave me his card though and told me if I change my mind to call him but I doubt I will call him anytime soon.
Kelley blue book to me doesn't make sense it decreases the value of a car if it has parts that perform better than the original...:cookoo: :nono: :cookoo:
I just know that me personally and the buyers that would be interested in this type of caddy would take into consideration the extras I've done to it and they wouldn't even care about the KBB value(as I've seen from experience). caddycruiser 10-30-05, 06:24 PM You have to look at it in perspective as cars progress quicker the rarer cars will eventually become classics.

Wow, what a perfect example. I really think these cars, especially the Fleetwood and Impala SS, are going to become true classics (even though they really already are, sort of, since they've been out of production for almost 10 years). Main reason why, among others, I'm trying my best to make sure neither the Fleetwood or even my dad's high mileage, but immaculate, Roadmaster ever get sold and go to someone who doesn't recognize what they really are. My brother and I are both willing to take them on in the future, in addition to buying a few others of interest--like me, right now, debating whether or not ANOTHER '93+ Fleetwood would be a good thing for me to buy and use next year for college and beyond. scurling 10-30-05, 07:35 PM I still have the gold set for both my '94s. I also have a door key copied and kept in a pocket behind the wheel skirt, just in case the keys get locked inside. With two Fltwds., one with security system, and one without, the doors auto lock a little differently. I've been caught before with the door autolocking while it's open, then I step out and let the door shut.
Luckily, I've been home in the driveway the two times that has happened. The FWB with the security system locks and unlocks the doors with the transmission shifter. caddycruiser 10-30-05, 08:11 PM I still have the gold set for both my '94s. I let my wife use them, and I use the copied set.

If there was at least ONE option I wish my '93 had, it would be the Security system. I HATE only being able to lock and unlock the car with either the inside button or the key outside, plus the fact that I prefer the auto locks, or at least programmable ones. Regardless, my next Fleetwood, whether it has the stock system or not, WILL get a full range remote entry/remote start system.

the 93 in fact is rarer than it's later brothers because of the different engine and different drivetrain..which sometimes is a good thing I would think there is probably less of them because they were only made that way for one year ocjmakaveli 11-01-05, 05:15 PM if anyone is interested here is the gold key for the doors http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CADILLAC-GOLD-KEY-BLANK-H-KEYWAY-CADDY-GM-NEW-IN-BAG_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40016QQitemZ8011328 111QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
I just bought one and it is brand new uncut in the gm bag, got it today. I have them, but they are on my wife's set, which don't get used often. I have my steel key with the Cadillac crest on it. I have both original very worn key FOB's too.
Did they still give you 2 sets of gold keys in 1994? My mom's 85 Fleetwood had 2 sets of gold, but she sold the car and kept one set!
I still have my gold keys which I use everyday I'm starting to wonder if I should stop using my gold keys and just use the plain ones for storage value I don't want them to break.I also still have the wallet key which works to start the car in case the key gets lost. After last friday I learned to keep a third set where I can get to it for my FWB. My son used my keys to open the car, and gave them to my wife, and she left to go 40 miles away and expected me to meet her there.... Bummer, she had to come all the way back so we could leave to go out of town.
