First, thanks to all for your good advice on maintaining my NorthStar. Knowing now that these early NorthStars tend to blow headgaskets, what is a safe upper limit for coolant temperature? Last nite coolant temp read 199 degrees. Vehicle was operated thru town; ambient temp was 50 degrees F.
Thanks for all your input! Great site!!

The cooling fans don't even kick on LOW speed until about 225. If it gets too hot, it will go into "Limp Home" mode by alternating shutting down cylinders and pumping air to try and keep it cool enough to get you to safety. That doesn't kick in until 250+ I think. I have personally seen 236 on my car on a hot day stuck in traffic and it's just fine. I wouldn't worry about the coolant temperature so much as just making sure the cooling system is properly maintained.
