: Shift Knob GM Should Have Used In The V

Finally got around to installing boot and shift knob this past weekend. Shift knob and boot are out of a 2005 GTO Monaro....IMHO it looks a Thousand times better than the stock knob....Plus it's twice as heavy and matches the interior perfectly!! Took a little time to get it on right.....but worth the effort.

Why GM skimped and didn't go with this knob and REAL leather boot, I'll never understand:(

Hmmm, I've never driven my GTO and thought I want this knob on my V. It is nice, the V's knob is just different.

I know the GTO's knob is a pressure fit one. I assume it just works with the V.

It looks like it's $273 for it, GMPD $156. That's the knob, you'd still need the leather boot if you want the stitching to match.

so is it 273 or 156???

AmesCTS-V

Depends on if you buy it from a dealer that charges list or from GMPD. I haven't found a boot part number yet, but I'd bet this is at least a $200 mod even going through GMPD.

That really looks nice! I'm smelling another group buy for all those already in on the UUC and bushings group buy who want to install this as long as they've got thing broken down for that.

Sharky, you still got the B&M in?

Okay, I'm unjacking this thread now ...

So, what makes this such a (more) difficult install?

Ok…hears my story on the shifter.
I drove a GTO with this knob and boot on it and thought it had to be the same (or close). GM usually crosses’s everything over into different car lines. I could not get a good deal in the states on the shifter and wound up purchasing it off Ebay from Australia. Paid $40.00us for Shifter & boot as a unit, brand new in the box. In Australia this kit is known as the “short shifter kit” for the GTO Monaro. This kit ships with a shorter mounting shaft attached.

After pulling off the knob from the shaft, I soon saw that the knob was a different mounting. The GTO knob has no “click on” mounting like the V. But, the shaft of the GTO is a hair smaller than the V. The GTO knob is held in place with a small bump around the bottom of the shaft. First I thought I would pull the V shifter shaft and weld a small ring around the base. By laying a bead of weld around the base and grinding it down I could achieve the same mounting as the GTO.
But, once I started to play around with the idea of just press fitting on the knob….this mounting method started to look much more promising. In order to achieve the same height(or a ½” lower) I cut a ½ inch out of the shaft. Then I used a pinch of silicone on the shaft and pressed it on.
Now I’m not talking about just pushing it on, you have to us a large vice or have a 250-pound friend push it down. At first I was worried about the knob working it’s way lose, but after getting it on, I’m more worried how the hell I’m going to get it off:D …. As for the boot, it’s real leather and matches the interior perfectly!!!! All I did was trim the bottom with scissors to mimic the factory boot.
Again, this is not a simple swap…..But with 1hour worth of effort, you’ll be extremely happy. I’d say the GTO knob weighs 7 to 8 ounces and is a direct match for the door handle/pull. This heavier shifter makes for much better shifts IMHO…..

This was all done on the stock shifter shaft…… if Ucc or B&M could put the GTO mounting on the V short shifter shaft(or both mountings) that would be VERY cool:D !!!!!!!!!

Has anyone looked into this more? Part #'s? I'm definitely doing this modification. Thanks for the tip Medicineman.

It should be part number 92146325. You'd probably still want the boot so the stitching matches. Sounds like medman got it from Aussie land which made it much cheaper.

is the boot seperate part number?

Florian - Where did you buy it, if you don't mind saying? Additionally, did you install the new knob and boot on the stock shaft or a short shifter? I'm wondering how it will work on a UUC short sifter....
