View Full Version : 4 questions about my 90 Brougham 1990CaddyBrougham 10-12-05, 06:52 PM 1 When i turn the key on Acc. the Washer fluid light comes on on the dash. its full too. That do it in all the Broughams
2 What was or is sopose to be inside the center arm rest? there are 2 holes on the inside that look like they held something.
3 When im driving it, and the radio is on, it makes a buzzing/humming sound, more accelerator i give more higher pitched it gets, turns off as i turn the radio off. Any ideas?
4 If the car sits for 1 day or more, when i start it up i have to pump the gas pedal to get it to run. Depending on how long it sits is how long it takes to pump. a day or less it usually starts right up. 90Brougham350 10-12-05, 06:55 PM 1. You mean the light comes on, with the other lights (SES, oil level low, low voltage, etc.)?
2. The armrest holds a flip-out cup holder. Works very nicely.
3. The radio hum is a bad ground, also called alternator whine.
4. I'm assuming since you have to pump it, you have the carbureted Olds 307 5 liter. THis is normal for a carbureted engine. Do you have the 5 liter or the 5.7 liter?
Brian 1990CaddyBrougham 10-12-05, 07:25 PM For #1, its when i turn the key back, to turn on the radio. Not when i turn in on to "on" I know all the lights illuminate then. Bu this is on Accesorie, or when the ignition is on "off" or lock, then go back one more. Just the Windshield Washer.
CUP HOLDER???? How wicked sweet is that!!!! I was bumming that it didnt have one. Thats wicked. Ill have to find that part.
Any way to fix the radio?
Yup, the 5 liter 307. It takes longer then usual ui think. When i drive my Grandmothers 88 Caprice Classic Brougham with the carb. 305, it doesnt have the problem.
Not a big deal, just looks crappy when someone else is around and the caddy has a long time from when it starts. 90Brougham350 10-12-05, 11:10 PM There must be a short somewhere with the wiring for the washer fluid lamp. I suppose if you felt like it you could take a peak around in there, see if everything looks alright, but the wiring doesn't make much sense without the service manual. Are you sure your choke is working properly? It shouldn't take too long to get it to start, especially once you get the feel down for exactly how much pedal to give it when you turn the key. However, if the choke is having problems, you might have a difficult time getting it started.
Brian brougham 10-13-05, 01:30 AM I forget what my windshield washer light does. I know it comes on when you turn the key backwards but I think it only does that when the windshield wiper fluid is low. If I think about it I'll try it tomorrow and see what happens. Unless someone played around with the wires in your car before I'd just guess that if theres something wrong with it that it's the sensor in the bottle. For the starting problem it's probably time to rebuild the carberator. Sometimes they can get a problem when a o ring or a seal wears out and the gas drips out of it when it isn't running. You always have to pump the gas but it shouldn't be too hard to get it started. 90Brougham350 10-13-05, 10:08 AM Hmmm, I thought the light only came on when you pressed the spray button and were running low.
Brian I just found this group (great group, by the way, I've managed to learn quite a bit already), but I have been driving various RWD Cadillacs since the late '80's, so I've learned a few things over the years. I'm currently driving a 1989 Brougham with 129,xxx miles, bought it wrecked and brought it back to life.
1. Several of mine did this. Consider it normal.
2. The cup holder is a standard GM item that has been used for years on just about every make. It breaks easily. Check eBay, good ones show up from time to time for about $5-$10. The pins snap into the holes in the arm rest.
3. Almost certainly a ground. The trick will be finding it.
4. Sounds like the carb is leaking down overnight, probably time for a rebuild.
Hope some of this helps! brougham 10-13-05, 06:48 PM Hmmm, I thought the light only came on when you pressed the spray button and were running low.
Brian
I think that is what it does. But I do know that if it's low and you turn the key backwards sometimes it will stay on all the time. I tried it today and I didnt' see the light at all and my container is full. 90Brougham350 10-13-05, 08:25 PM I'll try mine tomorrow, I'm quite low and I'm getting the light coming on when I press the button.
