Last night coming home from work my wife hit a deer, coyote, or dog--she's not sure what. Being the animal lovers that we both are, we were both pretty upset about it. Luckily there was no damage to the car or her, just emotionally. I've hit two dogs (that I remember) and I know how it feels. She never had.

Anyway, today I'm looking into deterrent devices. Do any of you have any experience with either of these?

Deer get really active this time of year.

After I hit my first deer in South Arkansas I installed 2 of those double whistles on the front of my old truck. I only hit 4 more deer after that. :mad: IMHO those whistles are as worthless as tits on a boar hog. I'm sure they're better than nothing though. :o

I've heard that they can scare the animals and cause them to run into the road. So I guess the best thing to do is just keep an eye out and drive slow!

It isnt pleasant, especailly when you end up with a cracked or dented fron bumper. On my 2000 S500 i had to replace the whole front grille after i hit a fox at 80mph, it was either hit a fox or crash my car, i took the fox, which nearly lead to me crashing my car. It totally smashed the grille, and i needed to replace that and the front bumper and light cluster.

Im more vigilant wheni drive at night now.

Yeah when I lived in deer country I considered one of these.
Most people told me they dont work so I didn't get one.

Four years of moutain driving with deers and no accidents.
If I had one of these devices, convoluted logic suggests it did its job......

The only thing I have ever hit with a car is a little white mouse that double back on its tracks and getting popped by my behemoth 88 Fleetwood. I still felt pretty bad about that at the time.

My Mom hit a German Shepherd on the HW once, she felt bad. There's nothing you can do if they just run up to chase your vehicle at high speed.

I know but the ones I see on cars are just tiny little things, and they fit under a side mirror and you barely see them...

The first deer (of 5 total) I hit caused almost 5k in damage. I had the hood, both front quarter panels, the condenser, radiator and fan assembly, fan shroud, bumper and bumper cover, headlights and markers all replaced. I was driving around 90 mph though. :o The most $$ I've seen spent on repair after hitting a deer was around 10k. That was on a buddy's truck. Deer can be expensive when you kill them with a vehicle. :yup:

The smart thing to do is to hit the animal. People who try to swerve usually end up in a far worse accident. The exception to that rule are the poor bastards who have the deer come through the front windshield (that's windscreen ;) :D ).

the worst part was trying to get fox blood out of the winscreen wiper blades, there was a plume ofred and then there was bits of fox all over the front of the car, its brush tail was in the tyre grooves. It came to over £1k to fix, because there was blood in an air intake or something....

Well there's no deer over here where I live, but we do have mongooses (little evil squirrels), boars, and cows. Mongooses are worth 50 points. Boars are worth 10 points and some bacon. The cows are worth a trip to the hospital, and steak dinners for the week. :p

Yea, my caddy wasn't new, but new to me...6 days after I got the darn thing, I hit a fox which cost 3K to fix...it was in the shop for eight days. The better half of its first fifteen days of its life with me, it was in intensive care!

I nearly burst into tears. When i hit the animal there was 34 miles on the car. I wanted to kill the fox again

A couple years back my neighbors bought a brand spanking new Lexus something or other, custom ordered and everything. They were bragging all week about, "I cant wait to show you my new Lexus" or "my new Lexus is going to have this or that" and "I got such a good deal on my new Lexus." Fate did her job, they hit a deer on the way home from the dealer. Totalled the car. Not knowing what happened, when they showed up in a cab that evening I came out and said, "hey, wheres the new Lexus?" The guy just about killed me.

Me and my friends were coming from a Casino and we hit a deer with a 90 Integra at about 70mph, hit the hood and bounced over the car, did'nt do anything to the front bumper but the hood was ruined. He was lucky. I hit a racoon on my motorcycle at 75mph, almost scared the poop out of me. My friend in front swerved to the shoulder I went left the coon went right then left into my front tire. Glad it wasn't a deer I'd be dead!

Sounds to me like a bit of hassle to have to do all the 'wiring'.

Some questions I have....
-120db of sound pressure, even at high freq, isn't it going to be uncomfortable for people or other animals (dogs maybe)
-effective range of 700 ft. is that adequate time for the deer to hear and get out of the way when your cars is moving at 75 mph

here's quick math: car going 75 MPH=110ft/sec
so the deer has 6.3 seconds from the moment it hears this thing to move "away" from the impact point.....even if the deer can react that fast how does it know which way to go (the damned animal is dumb enough to run TO cars in the first place)

Anyways, food for thought....I don't think it'll work
