Hello all,

Is this a doable repair at home? I should be able to get all the tools I need, I can't remember the one that separates tie rod & pulls out the shaft from tranny housing, etc. I will eventually have to do both shafts, but only the passenger side one has failed for now. If anyone's ever done this can you walk me through it? My guess is that the process wil go like this:

1. break the axle nut loose while vehicle is on ground (I heard this will be very hard----might need impact gun just to get it loose?)
2. lift vehicle
3. take wheel off
4. turn spindle/brake assy to easily access shaft
5. separate tie rod end from spindle & separate sway bar link from lower control arm if more room is needed to snake the axle in & out
6. separate lower ball joint to get lower control arm out of the way
7. slide axle end out of the hub (I heard this may require some persuasion? Is is easy to damage speed sensor while doing this?)
8. pull out axle from tranny housing (is there some sort a snap ring/retaining ring that I should be careful with? Or does the axle just pull out with a gear puller or with a flat head screw driver?)
9. and reverse the procedure to install the new one

If any of this sounds wrong, PLEASE comment! And anything else I should be careful of (ABS ring on the shaft or speed sensor?). I need to know how to do this by next weekend. Thanks for your help.

Can anyone please help me with this? I'm sure some of us had to do this job... I would really appreciate any inputs to this. Thanks a lot.

You pretty much have everything covered. The snapring is on the end of the axle. Make sure it comes out with the axle. When putting the new axle in, dont be too rough when it because it can damage the internals. On my 87 I put the axle in the outside end first and then the other end in the trans. Try to keep the axle as straight as possible. One more thing make sure the axle is locked into the trans by pushing the end in and then take a flat screwdriver and try to pry it out but not too much force. If it doesnt budge, you okay.

Was wondering if you went ahead and did the half shaft replacement yourself? I am about to take that one on, and not sure if I should or not. The transaxle risks bother me. I know this thread has been out there awhile, but thought I'd give this a shot.
