Of the new differentials!!!

It has definite differences, they are subtle, but the whole case looks beefier, and it is bigger than the original.

Posting Pics....see what you think.

1st pic is the old, the rest will be the new.

Looks cleaner!

Check the part # on the invoice.

How much did you have to contribute?

It doesn't look any beefier to me.:alchi: :canttalk:

There is an illusion that the input shaft looks thicker because of the rust stain on the old shaft.

I think there is someone on the board from Lindsay that can tell the new part #.

This is definetly version #3. I have one and two. They have widened the ribs and stiffened the case. Its a bit beefier on the outside.

Sweet!!!

My bill is a bit off due to the arrangement.

Here is the one of 3 #s 2 list as lubricant.

#15793756

I hope this is correct, like I said, there are those #s, then seperately is the # for the bushings.

Well, I have been driving very gingerly, but so far the rear is very solid feeling. I've not been in a "parade" situation yet, I'll be doing some more driving later as I've been busy. Obviously, I'm working thru the break-in, so lets give me a few more miles and I can give better info.

I think the old and new PNs would be good to have on the FAQ board so we can let the dealer know which one we want because I know I would have to tell them if/when I need another one.

Here's the old information (from another thread):

I need to search my data and see if Getrag ever told me of the diff number that would be the "running change". I don't think they did. The Newest diff number, at least in February or so when I was going through this last, was:

GM PART # 10368780
CATEGORY: Differential Carrier
GM LIST: $1,863.32
OUR PRICE: $1,304.33
DESCRIPTION: CARRIER

Prior to that they had installed:

10361308 ($1821.43/$1,275.00 GMPD).

If #15793756 is correct, this is indeed a new part number.

10368780 is what they put in mine, according to the paperwork.

Looks like we have a winner!

Congrats on the "new" rear end.!

Somehow we need to verify that this is indeed the STS-V improved rear and not a version III CTS replacement. It would be 'good' to be sure. Can our GM connections find out? :stirpot:

Never happen, too much added weight.

I thought it was supposed to be cast iron as well and I considered the additional weight involved. My initial thought was that the added weight would be negligable.

Anyone have any estimates of how much additional weight a cast iron diff would be?

In any case, any improved differential is a positive!

I can tell you for sure that 15793756 replaces 10368780...

As far as it being the STS-V rear, have to make some inquiries on Monday...

O.K., I can say this, sadly the pics don't show all the eye can see. Just looking at the changes, it seems very obvious to me, this diff will be very strong.

Look, we are never going to have a slicks and 6000 rpm hole shot setup, independent rears just aren't designed for that.

But, we should and 64 you're right, I'll find out, be able to drive with confidence in our cars. From my limited knowledge, but good understanding of things, I see this in this new diff.

Lass, your right, we need to know if its an upgrade or the real deal. Since no mention of an upgrade was made during the meeting, I guessing its it.

My confidence level has certainly risen, as has some faith in GM, as I really don't know what else I would drive.....

COME ON 500 MILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My part numbers are the same as HeavyMetals. Also looked at all my dealer service visits. I found some VERY interesting notes on my receipts. I thought that I'd read these pretty thoroughly but now that I re-look at these in context I see a pattern. I will post a separate thread.

New diff' definitely looks different by the way.

Doug,I'm very curious about the total bill on your new diff.I'm pretty sure many of us will be replacing ours at our own expense due to mods.Glad to see your back on the road enjoying your car.I really hope caddy gets a clue and starts to try to understand the performance driving crowd and this car they have produced. All of us love to drive fast in here, the car was designed to do so.

I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday, and I'm proud to say, I have the same diff. on my car. I'm no mechanical wiz but its all dirty like its been under my car for a year. When I went for the ride with the guy he was telling me that he has to order parts for it. Take it apart and replace things just like in the SRX and Escalades. Because of my work schedule I had them lock the keys in the car and I picked it up when I got home, so I wasn't able to ask any questions. Sad to say it whines almost worse now then before. They left a note saying not to accelarate hard for 500 miles so I haven't yet. When I am driving in forth it whines just like before when you barely press on the gas, and what annoys me is in sixth. When I'm going down the highway in 6th, when I press on the gas hard enough to just maintain speed it screams at a high pitch. Its really noticable (over the radio) starting at 82. Do you think I should have them fix it again right away? I would prefer to wait for the new beefed up rear. Should I go and complain and try to get them to order one for me. The other thing is they put 20 miles on it. Is that alot? Sorry to thread jack but its all related.

15793756 is the part number listed for the 2006 CTS-V... We can't tell at this point if it also fits the STS-V since the parts catalog has not updated with the STS-V info yet... If you wanted to draw a conclusion I would say this is the updated rear since the 2006 CTS-V is supposed to have the updated rear...

If I recall the conversation correctly. the GM guys said that the 2006 would get the new diff and that it was the same unit that was going in the STS V. Whether or not its an actual 'bolt in' that fits both is not known. It definetly has a beefier case.

Did they make you cough up anything too?

CTSV05

I had to pay for half the part and labor, and Chesrown picked up the other half of the part.

But as long as you have no warranty issues, hopefully it will not cost on a repair.

I drove some more tonite, and man, this rear is so much quieter, not even the whine, but the backlash slap is absolutely gone!!! I've heard it refered to as parade clunk, nothing-nada. So, as I'm nowhere near the 5 hundo miles yet I can't comment on much else.

Now, I as always do my best to let the truth be known, so I called the sm at Chesrown and asked how he was able to get the new rear, and he told me they(dealer and him) kept asking and asking for it instead of the old one. So I told him there were some things that had happened I was not happy about, but I wanted to thank him for putting forth the effort and getting me the better diff., I told him I'm not too big a p-r-i-c-k to say thanx!!! LOL!!

I also called Nick and left a message thanking him as well.

I figured since I raised a little stink, I would make sure to acknowledge when things are done correctly as well.

Now J, this is a direct bolt in replacement unit., The new diff is significantly taller, so I'm assuming that it has a larger dia. ring gear, the pinion yoke is def. larger in dia., as well as the case has a much smoother appearance, like its been forged, as opposed to cast.

I must say thanx to all here who were supportive of my plight, obviously it would have been nice to not had the warranty fight, but.......if I had to pay, at least I got the much better part, not to mention I may very well have the very first retrofit unit in America!!!!!
