its official, I own a cadillac deville... 1986 cadillac deville 4.9 V8..... cloth interior... blue in light blue out... tan vinyl top.... the back doesnt tell me wat the engine is the VIN says its a 4.1... but the person who owns the shop says it has a 4.9 in it... 72,000 miles I baught it for 3350... 850 down so i got 2500 left on it... nice condition.. everything in it is stock and works as suppose to....

what are some things when i pick it up oct 6, wat are some things I can do to make it better.. like its a good smooth running car but its a 86... right when i get it should i get a good 250 dollar tune-up and a oil change? and i was thinking about getting some new floormats... where could i get cadi floormats
for tht at... and other accessories? and what can i expect from the ride... horsepower? mpg? torue?? all the goodies...? what features are in it?

Search on eBay for "1986 Cadillac DeVille"...there are a bunch of owners manuals, shop manuals, etc. currently listed. If you get the owners manual you can settle the engine size once and for all. Just look in the specification section.

Under the hood theres a decal on the radiator support that lists the engine size, should be 4100. Also to the left of that decal is one describing the mantatory changing of antifreeze every 2 years. Also add the GM sealer pellets mentioned on that decal. Very important to the survival of that engine! I would change the antifreeze, eng. oil and brake fluid. in that order.

oh really?? and under the hood I noticed it said 4100... which made me REAL scepticle.. but is it possible tht it could still be a 4.9.. its a big engine... he claims its a 4.9... it defenetly gets 4.9 gas milage lmao.... becuz... the MPG Average meter... (only tho we didnt test drive it for tht long) stayed below 16.... which most people told me ur average would be around 16-20 intown and maybe 22-27 on the high way?....

~ Epik Liphe: I'm Skeptical just reading from afar! I'm Really Not a Fan of the 4100 Engine by experience (I used to work on em in the 80's until I jumped ship to BMW) At least you have an out if the dealer has misrepresented himself!? You need to find out For Sure what is under the Hood! On another note, I've seen many '91 to '93 4.9 Coupe Deville's with mileage from 70 to 100k sell for the same amount or less than you're paying for the '86! Check out eBay and do a search for Sold Cady's and see for yourself. I didn't pay much more then you are paying for that '86 as I did for my '91 Fleetwood Coupe!!!!!!!!!!!

~ You Will Pay More if You Purchase through a Dealer! You may want to re-think this deal!? Just My 13 cents worth.

Thanks for the info on the '86 (decal underhood and the maintenance of). Blue Book lists my '85 for ONLY 1,600.00 which to me is sad as my Caddy is all leather with power everything! Brand new paint job, no tears, I would say immaculate interior and out also only 65,000 original miles. I managed to get mine through a trade agreement so I don't consider I paid much.
I have thought about selling him but I don't think I will get a price I want unless the '86 guy wants to buy it!! lol. I did join this site to see about whether or not an '85 is considered a classic yet, and what if anything when it is an antique. Does anyone know about a Caddy club in North Va?

Dorothy, I am also in NOVA and I know there is a club but I don't recall the name. Do a google search on "cadillac club virginia" or just call Moore Cadillac and they will tell you.

wurd i know its a lil bit pricey... but its VERY rare tht u find a 1986 cadi deville sedan thts in tht great of shape... i mean my friend paid 6500 for his VOLVO.. with leather sun-roof.. 97 and 63,000 miles on it... and I only paid half for a better ride... with damn near the same miles..... so i mean u can look at it either way... if i was 2 go out and get a new honda it would cost me 18,000 but im very content with my car... also it will be my first car... so when i sit down with my grand kids... i can tell um... 'yep, i remember my first car... i had a 86 deville sedan.. ran like a beast... GM engineering owns' lol

k, first of all, is it TBI or PFI thats a first giveaway....and the 4.1 will have an egr valve with a funky adaptor and the 4.9 has it on the even bank of cylinders side of the intake, as well as i believe that the 4.9 has 2 o2 sendors and runs the crossover pipe on the top and the 4.1 is on the bottom...or maybe thats in seville vs. devilles.

~ RARE is Relative! If you are happy with Your Ride than that's all that counts! Be ready to spend a Dollar or Two to keep her up! My Cream Puff Did Not Pass Smog this time She Needs a new EGR valve (she's still sportin' the original) and there may be a vacuum leak somewhere! But there are other things like the mirrors had some stone chips from Hiway driving so, new mirrors! I'm still looking for a New Drivers Leather seat cover not that mine is bad but it shows a little wear compared to the Passenger seat so, I search. My Father bumped the back of My Coupe and put a crack in the plastic trim so, I search. OEM Garage door remote, new floor mats, Dual cup holder, Complete New Stereo System and there is all the regular maintenance. What I'm trying to say is you'll have to keep her up in pristine condition if it will ever be a collectable! I don't see Jay Leno knocking at your or my door, but he just might at Sandy's! My '77 Elcamino is technically a collector but I don't see to many Mullet boys lining up for it!?

~ Keep us up to date with your New venture!

I know how it is when you find a car you just can't live with out - if it cost $1 or $100,000 - and you can find a way to pay for it, you will. I believe that the 4.1 has the same dimensions as the 4.9, I've known guys to put 4.5's in place of the 4.1 (FWD) but no 4.9 in place of a 4.1. The mileage should pick up once you start driving it on a regular basis- it may be that the car has only been on short test drives and has not had sufficent time to warm up (it kinda like an old car runing with the choke on) My buddy replaced the MPG computer on his 87 Deville and mileage stayed low for a few months till it "learned" - he was retired and probably drove about 50 miles per week.
When I was a kid, I called my father from the Chevy dealer to ask him if I was getting a deal on the 78 Caprice I was looking at - "If your happy then it must be a deal" so owner satisfaction is a big part of the deal!
