Someone tried to steal our cadillac while my wife was at the doctors with our daughter. They didnt even get in the car but broke out our back drivers vent glass. We found one at a salvage yard but our main concern is would they even be able to start the car as we have the ignition with the chip in the key? Also any tips on theft prevention would be gladly appreciated thanks!

Well, depends on how good they are! Hate to say it, but yes, they could have if they were above average thiefs....

Bummer about the car, that glass is typically a quiet one to break in with, which is why it gets tagged first. break it, get the lock and you are in. Now, jimmy the column lock and then they can get around the ECM stuff (don't really want to advertise how).

The 'pellet' system is easy to get around for more sophisticated thieves. There aren't many resistor combinations.

Your best bet is one of those column guards. They're a little bit of a pain but they are tough to defeat and they are VERY visible. I have one on the GN for when it's out of my sight (which is very rare because my collector's insurance doesn't allow it).

Sorry to hear about this! My daughter went to MCV in downtown and I always told her to be extra careful during her 4 years in Richmond, especially when I looked a the amount of stolen vehicles in that area. Someone did a hit and run on her old 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited at Shockoe Bottom, other than that and constant alignment issues due to potholes, her and her car(s) survived Richmond.

Wow, I just came back from the richmond area and it seems that car theft seems to be pretty popular. Too bad thought that if a car thief is determined enough to get your vehicle he will probably get it.

mike93sedandeville, sorry to hear about that. I would go with turbojimmy's advice and get a column guard.

You gotta move out of Richmond...c'mon up here to Northern VA...nobody bothers trying to steal a '93 Caddy, they are too busy stealing the Caddys, Mercedes and Hummers that are all less than a year old.
