I have a new (never been fired) GM Northstar motor but I don't know what year it is or what car it might fit into. The stamped tag on the lower right side of the motor is..... 6RU611896. The motor was donated by GM years ago and it just sat until now.
A '93 & '94 are easy to tell. They are the only years with a functional aluminum intake manifold cover. The fuel rail is inside the manifold. All models after that have a black composite manifold with an external fuel rail.

"R" is the year according to the VIN stamp. 1994. But if it was a crate engine the stamped # may be just an engine stock number. Could you post a pic?

It's some sort of a "VIN derivative" - the 6 digits may simply be engine sequence number.
Not sure if this diagram holds for pre-2000 manufacture, but here's the derivative breakdown - click a thumbnail to enlarge, use your browser <-- to back out to this post.
