This is good information and I will check it out.
..
On a monthly basis (average for May - July 2005), OnStar responds to approximately:
400 stolen vehicle location assistance calls
900 air bag notification calls
140 Advanced Automatic Crash Notification calls
15,000 emergency calls
27,000 GM Goodwrench® remote diagnostic service requests
23,000 roadside assistance calls
43,000 remote door unlock requests
383,000 route assistance calls
9,500,000 OnStar Hands-Free Calling calls
..
Wow.. I am amazed at how many requests they actually are receiving.
I just got my first email today, it doesn't tell you much more information than you would be able to find out by looking at your OLM or other guages, it's nice to know that your anti-lock brakes and airbags are in working order though
Overall a fluffy feature, but convenient none the less, and free to boot

What does it tell you? Just everything is ok? It's suppose to remind you to get an oil change. Anything else? Does OnStar first ask for your email address when you sign up?
Yes, they ask for your email address
It checks your OLM, Transmission status and fluid, antilock brake system (fluid levels and diagnostic codes), air bag system. It tells you either yes, everything is good, or if there is a possible trouble area it will tell you that as well

That is some cool stuff. I wonder why the other car manufacturers haven't tried to get into OnStar or create their own OnStar type of service. It's one of the reasone we have stayed with GM products.

Not to hijack the thread or bash OnStar since I was a loyal user since 11/03...but the other day I just had to cancel my service because EVERY month since my one year free service ended, I either had a red flashing light on my rear view or no green light for OnStar. They would always tell me hardware problem for the flashing red and to bring it to the dealer..and of course, no green light means you can't even get them thru your car so you have to call them up..I got so frustrated this last time I had to cancel....Maybe I'll try them again after I've calmed down cause I really liked the added "sense of extra protection" - air bag deploy, stolen vehicle recovery etc...:crying2:
Some companies use contracted services, sometimes OnStar. GM took an interesting route with OnStar, working to create value-added services. I don't know how much money they're making from it or if it helps keep customers in the GM fold.
It's too bad pjohn had the OnStar glitch, just as I was getting myself pretty excited about this new diagnostic service. I like to work on my own stuff and I'm wondering if they would walk you thru the diagnostic process so you could fix it yourself (probably not). There is a phone service called Ident-a fix(i think) that will do that for you-
fyi for canadians, it says the on the onstar site that this service isn't available to canucks until sometime in 2006. not true..i called onstar tonight and they checked and my 2005 cts is elegible and i'm signed up.

This is pretty cool. It doesn't really tell you anything Earth shattering, but it is cool.
