I'm just wondering what people have experienced for the service life of their fuel pumps. My '82 Eldo has ~170,000 miles, and the fuel line still reads good pressure (10psi). However, I'm starting to wonder if I should get a replacement, since I don't want to be stranded somewhere if/when it goes out.

Any thoughts, or do these things last a lifetime if you get a good one etc? I'm surprised it made it this far, but it does say something about their quality build.

Thanks-

One in my 84 Eldo (retired now) started acting up around 150k miles. It would make the car run like crap on the highway or sometimes stall when sitting at a traffic lights. And all of this was very intermittant! I finally broke down and bought a press. gauge. Of course, the car started running fine from that point on! It finally kicked the bucket (at a gas station of all the places). I had it towed home (less than a mile) and it started again! GRRRR! But it died agin shortly. I hooked up the press. gauge and I had no pressure. Had the pump replaced and drove the car another 70k miles or so.

Oh, my gas tank was a bit rusty inside (which probably contributed to the early demise of my pump).
Yes, the gas tank was also replaced.

So, your's might just go or sputter like mine... Or it might be ok for another 100k miles...
