Thanks Gents,

I have been considering a camera for backing up that you could "call up" on the screen.

pray tell, how would you wire it in?

That is something I have to look into.

I need to get a set of schematics for the nav/display unit.

It may need an A/D converter and an interface.

Maybe that can be a good project.:alchi:

Maybe I can find a unit that has been pulled or from a wreck.

I think a backup camera would be cool.

I have looked into it... Without ripping into the unit itself, you need the TV tuner unit and a Export version (the header pins are not terminated on the US version) and then (only then) can you use the auxilary input...

Ripping into the unit, there is a company in ny that says they can do it (or output, cant remember which) but they have to solder on the head unit and warranty nothing.

I am (and have been) trying to get a schematic for this unit for a long time... maybe you will have better luck.

We can chat about this offline too... I want a backup camera/ alternate input source as well...

This place implies they have something for $599...

A backup camera who's transmitted image would be triggered in the same or similar way that the backup light switch is when you put it into reverse with that image immediately displayed on the NAV ... now that's what I'm talkin' about!

(Sorry, barry007, for continuing the hijack of your thread.)

Continuing with the hijack by rand59er, can anyone figure out how to do the back up camera? I think that's a brilliant idea.

I have been considering a camera for backing up that you could "call up" on the screen.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. It doesn't seem as though it would be that difficult.

The backup camera is not the problem.

It is the interface.:thepan:

All depends on the time and trouble and cost.:banghead:

Anybody got a unit they have pulled out or know of a a wreck that a unit can be salvaged from?

Starting to sound like an interesting project.:hmm:

damn thread hijackers...but i love the ideas it spurnned...i've got some friends that work at the big 3 in the nav/radio area - they are looking into getting the schematic for me. If I can get it, i'll post it and let someone smarter than me figure out how to make it work.

As for my orig idea, i was thinking of adding a monitor in the visor as an alternative - could do the same with the back up cam as well.

If you get those schematics, send them to me.. I have been trying to get something like that on our radio for a long time!
